I almost consider it an Achievement - I've never seen another player.
Done a few CG's, they're almost always fun. The last one I tried turned against me, and I've abandoned it.*

I've tried to play CQC, but I've never seen anyone in the queue either, which makes me wonder if other players are just a myth.

*Since there's no real way of opt out of a CG gone badly, I've just gone back to NMS until the event ends.

Yes - you just have to find the right Empire/Fed combat zone, they seem to be somewhat semi-permanent (i.e. show up in a CZ, wait for a few minutes, capital ship(s) appear(s) -> capital ship will always appear in this CZ).

Checking CGs - yep. From the description, there's another Imp/Fed spat going on at Mu Koji. Should be plenty of opportunities for capship spotting.
