ED Supersampling 2x performance on RX 480 / GTX 1070

if ED becomes Vulkan or DX12 compatible, we'll see the 480 competing with the 1070 with a advantage for the 480.
If it stays DX11 the 1070 will be way more effective even if a 480 should be able to manage 1080p in ultra without problem.
(my current 970 OC manages my 5760X1080 in ultra without the slightest pb, and a 480 is at least as efficient).

For the OP, at the settings you mentioned (1080p/ultra with 2x SS) Vsync off to see the actual fps.

Very similar to the 4k results given that 2x SS from 1080p is an effective resolution of 3840x2160.

I've rerun the tests I did in my mini review. On a single gtx1070 (founders edition),

In space - 95-100fps
Parked in a station - 60-70fps depending on which way I'm facing.
At Ehrlich station (spelling?) Surface port - 55-65fps
On random planet with nowt around - 85-90fps

2x supersampling is demanding as hell!

I'm sure 2x rx480s would beat that, hopefully somebody can post their results :)

Just a tip, if you are getting RX 480, get the "Red Devil" version, it offers like 25% more performance for the same price, insane thing

One thing to watch out for - base RX 480s only need a 6-pin power connector. "Red Devil" and other custom upgrades sometimes use an 8-pin connector. Nothing worse than opening your shiny new graphics card and finding you have to buy a new power supply.

Thats purely fictional.

To the OP, RX480 and GTX 1060 is what competes with one another. GTX 1070 is far from both of them performance wise.

480 isn't in the same class as the 1070 by a long stretch I'm afraid. It's a bit less than the 970 OC or even at best.

Ill get some formal figures for my Sapphire Nitro OC 8GB 1342 this evening when get home from work.
my processor is an ancient i7 920 overclocked to 3.8ghz

However I am playing Elite using AMD Virtual Super Resolution at 2560 x 1600 setting on my 1680 x1050 monitor and can tell you I am getting over 60fps in space and around 40-50 fps at engineer bases and approximately 60 fps in an srv. That's with the VSync off and no supersampling as its not required if using Virtual super resolution.

The Virtual Super resolution gets rid of jaggies and IMO produces a sharper image than using in game supersampling.

Slightly off topic but the earlier performance performance chart showing relative performance between 1060 and rx480 will have been at launch and probably is using the default AMD cards rather than the superior partner boards, and then comparing them against the Nvidia partner boards which is what was available for retail sale. Also AMD have had a number of driver updates that have significantly improved performance since launch. Context is important when looking at benchmarks as 1060 and rx480 both have their strengths and weaknesses in different games. Select certain benchmarks and you can really skew the performance outlook. Only safe thing to say is you cant go wrong with either card.

Yep. DSR/VSR seems to be a better solution.

but 1070 is nearly 500 pounds, for that ammount you can get the double devils which will perform way better

I got my 1080 for 79 more than that. I took that option because whilst a single card may be eked out by the crossfire I prefer single cards these days.

The 1070 is about 40-50% more performance compared to the rx480 (for almost twice the price of course). They are very different sections of the market.

Huh?

£270ish vs £410ish?

That's about 50% more expensive...

1070 is not worth it, u can get 2x Red Devils in crossfire and get better performance than 800 pound 1080, with 3x Red Devils you can rival titan and still be under 800 pounds

What about your power bills? Radeons have had a habit of being very power hungry...

Z...

Absolutely, both DSR and VSR are better options than the ingame SS. Annoyingly there are some situations where DSR in particular is just no use (not sure about VSR).

I play on a 4k native screen, since DSR will only scale up from your native res I'm stuck using the in-game supersampling:(

1070 can be got for 400 pounds

Yep, mine cost £399.99 on launch day.

My bad, I was still thinking the 480 was a £200 card

I just bought the Zotac 1070 amp extreme from Amazon UK for 429 sterling, just over 500 euro. I sold my 970 G1 for 210 euro so that took the sting out of the upgrade. It's worth buying a good card for the resale options down the line. Bang for buck the 1070 I think is the sweet spot.

...Plus I've just had enough of AMD drivers TBH... Seems like every new version is risking a potential voyager into problems...

Buyers seems to think the same. From the current looks of it, the 1070 is the new GTX970.

Looking at Steam numbers with Vulkan systems only to get more precise numbers for new cards regardless of Windows version.

August 2016:
GTX 1080 0.94% (+0.38%)
GTX 1070 1.48% (+0.72%)
GTX 1060 0.48% (+0.42%)
RX 480 0.26% (+0.14%)
RX 470 0.01% (+0.01%)
RX 460 0.02% (+0.02%)

GTX 970 10.14% (+0.08%)

That's a really good price for the amp extreme

Over on the overclockers.co.uk forums there's a leader board for the 3d mark dx12 benchmark, my founders 1070 beats pretty much every other 1070s gfx score (with a good OC) but can't touch the guys running the zotac cards. They're hitting 2150mhz clocks with little trouble.
