Horizons Engineers, worth my time?

Cmdrs,
I've been playing ED for 2-3 months. I feel I've done very well (I got a bit lucky with one of the CGs) and I've managed to amass a tricked out Cobra III, Asp Ex and an Adder. I enjoy open play(although I don't seem to engage with human players much and I've tried to join a couple of groups but, nothing seems to come of it); but that's not my issue.
I bought Horizons when it came out, but I haven’t actively engaged in it. I want my ships to be bad     but this means I have to upgrade them with the new engineers. I’m a family guy, I get to play this game an hour a day, if I’m lucky. I’ve seen a couple of videos on how the engineers work, but I don’t know who needs what to upgrade which. My question is; is it worth it? Is it worth my time reading into all this, figuring it all out and then spending the time to get it done? Will I get much more out of the game? Maybe this is one of the reasons I haven’t been on the surfaces of planets much (I have yet to use an SRA).
I play on the xbox one and I like to do most things in the game. Deliveries, blasting ships, mining, exploring (which I why I want to upgrade my FSD). I’d really appreciate hearing your views. Is it a quick cuddle to say it’ll all be good, have faith and you’ll be rewarded; or should I stay clear?
Thanks for your time, and fly safe Cmdrs.

I say go for it!
If the goal is to make your ships better then it's the route to take.
I enjoyed almost all of my engineering experience (although many do seem to hate it). It's transformed all of my ships, gave me something to do, arguably broken one or two though (made them very OP. I rarely fly my Vulture now. It's waiting for some nasty aliens to show up now..).
It's a feat of time management, planning and logistics, some hate that too. It appealed to me.
Useful online sites are eduardo.re and inara.cz These will give you all the info you need on what's what.
I upgraded and concentrated on my FSD range first. Made everything else easier.
There's no need to hoard the commodities either (no matter what others might say). I did my entire fleet, including a Vulture and FDL not hoarding a single item... You create a rod for your own back by doing so (unless RPing of course). Commodity storage at engineer bases is apparantly going to be in the next update though.

Go for it Cmdr

(que others deriding the whole affair ;))

You need them, playing in Solo/private, will give you the possibility to jump +26LY with 400t cargo in an Anaconda!, will give you a lot of mods weapons to deal with the NPC that will try to interdict you all the time!

Now, if you play in OPEN is mandatory! the human CMDRs pirating are fully modded! can kill any ship in seconds!

Hmm, a lot of level 1 modifications only require 1 sulphur or carbon or nickel to get.
I've been exploring for months so have pretty much 15 of all of the base materials and I spent a while scanning ships and wakes at a community goal station. That meant I could get quite a lot of level 1 mods easily.

They are not insane but for a few pieces of materials you can get a powerplant that doesn't heat up as much, or for a few wake scans you can get a 5% or so increase to jump range. Small modifiers but overall a nice feeling.

I say go for it, mess with the low level stuff (level 1-3) and see what you enjoy/don't. Try it the worst you'll loose a few evenings, maybe a weekend but you'll be able to make your own mind up on if you do or do not want to persue more modifications.

An emphatic YES! I'm gonna repeat what I said in the Xbox forum, I hope you find it useful:

If you want G1 - G4 and the odd G5 without grinding, it's no hassle at all, as long as you multitask. Having decent cargo space helps. I've done hundreds of rolls the past few weeks, and now want to get some of the rarer mats, but I'll also reroll lower grades in the meantime.

So I'm doing long-distance transporting this week, and I'll keep whatever commodities I get from data missions and other rewards. I'm full of data and materials from just normal playing; firing out limpets after combat, scanning ships etc. Sometimes I'll discard some that I have a lot of, to get a more diverse range in.

After I finish dropping off all my long-range transport cargo, I'll have a bunch of Engineers commodities on me, so I'll check them all out on the inara page for components: http://inara.cz/galaxy-components

Then I'll click through each one I have, and see what recipes that brings up. Then if I'm interested in those recipes, I'll click into them and check if I have the requisite data and materials. If not, I'll make a memo on my phone of what I need, then keep an eye out for it.

And it's that simple! Don't make it a grind for yourself unless there's something you really need. If you are put off by all this talk of grinding, PLEASE give this a bash, and see how easy it is to get really great improvements made to your ship. Doing a bunch of data runs between eg Ceos and Sothis to rank up the minor factions will easily net you around 60 components, and could get you some real marked improvements.

Engineers is absolutely one of the best things they've ever added to the game, don't miss out on this easy opportunity to customise your fleet. It is so worth it.

Getting Engineer upgrades is a pretty time consuming process. Unlocking the Engineer, gathering the ingredients, figuring out which upgrades you want...

Is it worth it?

Oh heck yes! My ships are so much better and more powerful now, and I'm still working on them!

Seriously, Engineer upgrades make a HUGE difference.

Get your FSD range first, it's pretty easy to get and helps with all the travelling you'll be doing for the rest :)

Good luck out there.

it's a grind if you are after the higher level upgrades, but it should be anyway considering the crazy amount of difference they make. i really don't agree with a lot of the roll parameters that have been implemented, but i think it's mostly a well thought out system and it's DEFINITELY worth having a go at. just don't be afraid to re-roll. sometimes you get secondary affects that really help in ways you didn't expect.

And I'll just second what Alex Brentnall said. The level 1 upgrades are easy, just one material needed (typically), and they are pretty easy to find. They don't make a huge difference to your ship, but what difference they do make can be very useful, particularly the power plant on power hungry builds.

Then, if you find you enjoy the process, the higher levels will beckon. :)

You can make it as hard and time consuming as you want it to be. Level one upgrades usually result in a 5-10% increase and chances are, if you just do surface rock blasting and run missions, you will have most of the stuff to do them anyway. Yes, some of the engineers and materials are time consuming, but you don't have to do them all, or all of them, for every ship. Also, say, if you're an explorer, the FSD jump range is probably the only mod you're going to be interested in.

This. In open you NEED it to compete. Not very nice, but true.

It's... Marmite. It seems as if you like it, you love it. If you dislike it, you hate it.

Personally speaking, after watching a fair few video tutorials, it's actually made want to avoid the experience. Doesn't look terribly intuitive. For the life of me, I can't comprehend why they've shoved a casino-like gambling mechanic in there. I'll likely have to attempt it at some point, but I honestly don't want to.

I'm not sure I've ever heard of anyone that's done engineers to be against engineers. All of the detractors I've seen have only experienced engineers second hand (through videos, stories, etc).

I'm not against it per say, but I think as is it creates a p2w situation that is highly off putting. It also needs several balance passes and anything above level one upgrades is pretty imbalanced. RNG is ridiculous. Materials hunting and reputation costs and grinds are gamey. I only play in open and often participate in CGs so for me it's a nessessity. I like that it makes ships feel unique though.

Sorry. On my mobile and cutting and pasting is a pain tbh lol.

To Engineer or not to Engineer.. its a no brainer. DO IT :)

My imp cutter now sports a 40mw power plant... And that's only a L2 upgrade. And that extra 4mw makes a massive difference. And suffice to say, my current 2,300 shield rating means that although I am no combat veteran, I can still go toe to toe with anaconda and walk away smiling :). Need I say more?

Just beware sometimes the RNG is hilariously frustrating. EG:

You can only answer that yourself. Part of the Grade 1 stuff is mildly accessible without too much hoop jumping with mild benefits and drawbacks. Personally, I can't be bothered with Engineers - to me it's time waster piled on enough time waste already in the game with all it's RNG mechanics tied to it.

Engineers are absolutely worth it! Unlocking and leveling up your rep with them takes time, but once they are repped up, it's really not difficult to gather the materials to considerably soup up your ships.

First one to unlock in a hurry is Felicity Farseer. Trust me when I say that increasing your jump range is a MAJOR quality of life improvement.
