The Oculus Rift CV1 General Discussion Thread

Well i'm not *too* worried, i'm a developer myself and i know very well how my programs look like when they are in progress (i.e: unshowable crap). I am disappointed though by the complete lack of VR support, as i actually backed the game *because* of the promised Rift support when the project was pitched. Also bought the DK2 and Rift mostly for space sims and race sims, with Star Citizen in mind. Elite Dangerous was a nice suprise, really, dogfighting has a visceral quality to it (especially with ballistic weapons) and can be quite intense when racing between asteroids. I think it's one of the best showcase for the Rift as of today, also one of the most complete (along with Edge of Nowhere maybe).

Unerelated note i just got my VR Glasses for the Rift. The fit is okay, lenses are not top quality though, for the price it's not suprising. They do have coma and loss of resolution in the corners - not that the original Rift lenses are perfect either - i notice it because my glasses have ultra thin high refraction, high quality lenses which are almost flawless so anything pales in comparison. They do add quite a bit of thickness, but since they are fit snug against the Rift lenses you can have a tighter fit than when wearing glasses. And of course not worrying about your own glasses scratching against Rift lenses is a big plus.
One expected downside is i cannot just lift and tilt the Rift to see my PC screen directly (since i'm not wearing my own glasses anymore), i guess i'll get that mod that shows any application window in the cockpit.

Could you give me some details on those VR Glasses? Last night I get a headache whilst playing because my glasses were pressing down on the bridge of my nose.

Is there anyone here able playing E:D completely stutter free in High Res Zones with Federal Security fights going on (a lot of debris after a while) in asteroid belts?
My framerate (6700k 980ti 16gb) is hitting the 90fps most of the time but drops very inconsistent in that area of the game e.g. when i move my head up or looking around while ships fly by or stuff. This happens even on VR Low settings with everything turned down and no Oculus debug tool on..

Checked MSI Afterburner and it tells me GPU AND CPU are about 50-70% most of the time.. Anyone else with those kind of problems? Pcars or Dirt is running and looking absolutely gorgeous on debug tool 1.5 without any stutter except when raining and they use my GPU to the max..
This really starts to kill my joy for E:D, big hope for next update :|

Look there: https://vr-lens-lab.com/
You need your prescription from the optometrist (6 measurements, 3 for each eye). I was a kickstarter backer so i got them early, dunno about the delays now.
You'll love them there are two separate lenses, so they stay clear of your nose.

When Star Citizen gets VR implemented ED will have a big problem in keeping a lot of their VR community, if they can't clean up the graphics. This may be the kick in the pants they will need. Tough to compete with a $100 million crowd fund and Chris Roberts, but I hope they will try. I would like to see FD adopt the SC approach to having a lot of DEV posts as to what they are working on. This would go a long way to diffusing player angst.
E:D has sold 1.4 million copies almost a year ago. If even half of those picked up Season 2, and if no one purchased any ship skins, that's 1.4 + 0.6 (2) x $50 = $100 million

There is apparently parity based on your figure.

Hi guys, little help here :p
Yesterday I got my CV1, I installed Oculus Home. Where can I check which runtime version it installed? I'd like to use the debug tool for pixel density but I'm really lost...
Thanks!

In the Oculus App go to Settings -> General and at the bottom it will tell you the version number.

To get the debug tool you need to download the SDK from here: https://developer3.oculus.com/downloads/pc/1.7.0/Oculus_SDK_for_Windows/

Extract the files and find the debug tool in the Tools folder. Latest version is 0.3. This thread explains what to do.

So I'm getting a CV1 in 5 days. I've never used VR before, although I know what to expect, I've been waiting for this for 30 years :D

I would like to know tho, is how many here have a CV1, have had it for at least a month, and are still regularly using it? It's surprisingly difficult to get an accurate idea of how many people actually use VR because the 'Internet' is all about the downers and complainers, rather than positive stuff.

So... any positive stuff here? :p

I got it 2 weeks ago, used it every day since then. I thought it's going to be good but I did not expect that it was THIS good. Yea, there's a lot of mudthrowing around bad resolution, and other crap, but once you're in the cockpit you'll be more interested in the sights, than counting pixels. It is awesome.

Need more posts like this one :p I don't mind reading criticisms but it just seems, like every topic ever created in the history of Man, only negative stuff tends to get discussed.

I've only had my CV1 for a few days and I might be in trouble. I bought it specifically for Elite Dangerous and any other space game. And I've been playing Elite in my CV1, but I can't do it for very long. I've never felt motion sickness in an instance of life until now. Seems like my iron stomach may have met a formidable opponent. Some days I'm good for several hours, others I just can't stay in the headset longer than an hour or two. Now I have to make a decision, tough it out and see if I can get used to it or return it.

I had the same feeling, it is now better. If you feel sick, take it off for 20-30 minutes. DO NOT TRY TO TOUGH IT OUT!!! You'll develop an involuntary reflex, and get sick immediately when you put on the headset! Phasing in is the key here. At first I had to take it off after 30 minutes, now I'm up to an hour and a half and improving. And I'm talking about CQC, fast turns in tight spaces... really churning your stomach.

Anyone else have problems in Elite Dangerous with the Rift since that last oculus driver update?
I did the update today and now ED freezes up with no control at all.
Only thing I can do is close the program and when I try again then the same things happens after 10 or 20 mins.

ED was working perfectly with the Rfit up until today with that new driver.
Just wondering if I'm the only one. Going to reinstall the Rift software and hope I can get it working again.. will be really hard to go back to 2d

The most important thing with the Oculus is the frame rate. If your video card is dropping frames and it dips below 90FPS for a significant amount of time it will make you sick. There are some settings you can turn off that will improve smoothness in ED and it will not impact the experience.

For one you can turn off depth of field now. Your eyes will do that for you automatically. No reason to have the PC do the extra work.

Anti Aliasing as high as you can before it impacts FPS. If you have a beefy video card you can ignore the AA and just up the Super Sampling in the global settings. However high your machine can stand it. Generally if you Super Sample in Nvidia you can pick the smoothness of the sample with a slider bar.

You can shadows up or down depending on your preference.

I can play in upwards of 2 hours now that I made those changes. I dont really go any longer than that because I cant sit around that long and I have to go do something. I also do not get sick at all in the game

I do not have the headset blackout when I roll my SRV on planet. I have rolled my SRV down the side of a canyon for almost 1 minute straight.(like the scene in the movie blacksheep) I did not get sick in the game even though if I had done that in real life I probably would have lost it.

If it doesn't work you can always uninstall the new one, and install the previous driver, 1.7.0.

Thanks guys, I'll definitely take your advice. I still need to work on the settings and find what works best for me.

I hate to admit it, but after using my CV1 for a couple of months now I tried my my DK2 again on Saturday and I think the image quality is so much better, despite the lower resolution. I'd forgotten just how awful the god rays are due to the fresnel lenses (hereafter to be know as "the Devil's spectacles") and managed to convince myself the CV1 was worth the money. If I had the decision to make again I'd keep the DK2 for ED (and the £500+).
