Newcomer / Intro Lots of bounty on my head. Am i missing something?

Hi!

As a new player in this awesome universe i have a hard time to understand how the bounty system works. I've done a lots of skimmer missions and gained 200cr and 400cr bounties every time i've killed skimmers but there are hundreds of thousands of bounties on my head now which i dont understand. How is it possible to have so mutch bounty if i'm gaining a few hundred every time i hit an installation? Is this a bug or am i missing something? Now that i am wanted like hell, there is no way to turn it to dormant because every time i take off there is a randomly generated npc who tries to kill me and this resets the bounty counter to 6 days. They are not to hard to beat but this makes me crazy. I am just hours away to buy a Python and turn myself into a law-abiding trader and i don't want to run/fight all the time.

Thanks for all the help!

PS: English is not my native language so please excuse any errors on my part.

If you have a "wanted" status in your current system just move to a different system. When the bounty timer runs out you can then go back to the system and pay off the fine as you won't be "wanted" at that time.

Thank you for the help and sorry for the late reply! What i still don't understand is this: If i gain 400cr bounty for every skimmer then how the hell i reached a whopping 750.000cr bounty? I'm playing the game for only a few weeks (6 days ingame)? Where is it came from? Gaining 800-1200crs for every mission this would mean i've done at least 750 missions in 6 days! :S Is there somewhere a list of what different crimes "costs"?

Hard to say. Clearly you are getting a lot more bounties than you think. Perhaps you should start writing them down in a notebook! Haha.

I've had maybe 5 bounties on me in 1000 hours of playing, but I'm a careful guy. I have no idea what you're doing. :)

If you are sure that it is (they are) bounties on your head then you must have been killing things that are not themselves "wanted" (or "lawless" in anarchy systems) - a lot of them to get 750,000 price on your head. I seem to remember that a penalty for murder was 6,000 cr.

However is it possible that you are also counting bounty credits in your transaction window? Bounties on your head have a timer against them, bounty credits do not.

Yea, I agree with Malc. Getting 750k on your head is a LOT of work. Max bounty I've ever received for a murder was 8600 Cr, so that is a lot of ships and skimmers you'd have to kill.
One can get such huge bounty on their head if they're smuggling illegal cargo and get scanned, though. In that case you'd get a fine as high as your cargo's worth and then, if you don't pay that fine in time it'll change into a bounty.
But I don't think you were smuggling that hard.

So the question is - Are you actually getting bounty or earning bounty vouchers? :)
If you look into the transactions tab on your left-hand panel, you'll see all the bounties, missions and other stuff. If there is a timer next to the bounty (something between 8 mins and 6 days) then it is indeed a bounty on your head and you'll have to wait it out or be killed by another commander who will then claim the bounty and you're clean.
But I would actually bet my shoes that there is no timer next to that bounty, right? In that case it is a bounty voucher for killing wanted ships and skimmers. You can land on any station or base in the system mentioned in the voucher, go to Contacts in station menu and claim the bounty. (=you'll get money for it)

Let us know what it was.

There's a known bug where bounty values fluctuate wildly.

I've a bounty on my head for a crime I didn't commit firing before the scan completed, which was close enough to the death of the NPC for me to be set up for murder by corrupt Federal police get the kill. This week, it has fluctuated from between 4 and 19 thousand credits. I suspect something similar might be happening to the OP.

I'm not sure. This bug seems to only double the bounty/fine until next refresh. 750k is way too much. :D

You might only Gain 400 Credits for each Skimmer.
But you just said that you for example constantly get stopped by Ships attempting to kill you for your Bounty.
Which means each of them adds 5500 Credits to your Bounty for Attack and Murder.

And then there is Fines.
If you got Illegal Cargo from a Mission for example.
And you got Scanned at a Station. You end up getting Ridiculous Fines.
I for example got a 750k Fine for Buying Narcotics on a Station where Narcotics were apparently Illegal. (which is hilarious given I bought it on the Open Commodity Market of that Station but well)

These Turn into a Bounty after 7 Days as well.
So it might be that all the Fines you Collected have been added to the Bounty now as well.
Increasing your Bounty to an fairly High Amount.

Remedy is easy tough.
Go to another System.
Bounties are Local things. So if you get some Systems Away. You stop meeting People relevant to this Systems Bounty. And will not increase or Reset it anymore.
Which will then allow it to go Dormant and allow you to Pay it up as a Fine at some point.

Thank you guys again! A few things to clarify:

1) Yes of course i was a realy bad guy because skimmer missions payed the most for me (with allied state i've done skimmer missions for over 2 million creds). I've done at least 100 skimmer missions for the easy money, but all the bounties gaind during those missions doesn't add up to that high.

2) I am aware of the "bounty hunter scanning/shooting" thing, i always let them shoot first so they get wanted (reporting crimes against me always on). I remember the first hunter i've killed and of course i didn't wait for the scan to complete (i didn't know the mechanics behind this), so i have one murder but it was around 8000cr.

3) My bounties fluctuating all the time after jumping to another system. Sometimes it goes well over 1.3 million. Right now it is 221.653cr and they are all dormant with the exact same 9H 30M counter. Don't know where is the rest of it but there is definitely no fines displayed at the moment. So they aren't turned into fines. Now jumping to another system, no fight, no scans, and voilá: it is nearly 800.000. I'm not wanted in this sectors. Tell me this isn't a bug.

4) It isn't matter where i am, NPCs are randomly generated around me to shoot at me because of the bounty (direct messages says the bounty on my head is todays lunch ticket) even in friendly space 30-40lys away from the system where the crimes was committed. Dormant state also doesn't matter.

5) At the beginning this was a nice constant income but failed boom time delivery missions a lot because i was interdicted as i approached a station or planet.

As I am sure you know dormant bounties when timed out become legacy fines in the issuing system which I believe can turn back into an active bounty if not paid off and you earn a new bounty from the issuer.

The issue with people in friendly systems shooting you for a bounty from light years away is probably down to them having performed a Kill Warrant Scan on you

Everyday struggle of a supervillain. :D
The day one gets on the slippery slope of crime, there's no turning back! [big grin]

I've seen some kind of bug where (dormant) bounties do get merged, but resolved once you jump to another system or if you re-login.

In the meantime, it's probably a good idea to stay a reasonable distance away (100ly+) from these systems where you've been on a crime spree. [arrrr]
And just wait for the bounty counter to time-out.
