Newcomer / Intro Just checking - unexplored? By anyone, or just by me?

The title says it really - I'm busy exploring, every system I've come to so far since I left the bubble has been "discovered" but not "explored" I'm assuming that means no cartographic data is available, and therefore I'll get paid for my efforts of flying around the system doing surface scans on all the planets and moons? Or is this a horrible mistake? It occurs to me it could just mean that my ship's computer doesn't have the data, but the cartographic service does (or may have) and therefore I'm wasting my time until I get to undiscovered systems?

Universal Cartographics will pay you for all scans, but you will get more if you are the first to report the information.

That's fine - but is there any way of knowing whether I'm the first to report it? Or do I not know until I get back and download it? Because if that's the case I'd be better just heading on out until I find undiscovered systems.

You won't know until you cash it in, or keep checking the system map in case someone else has beaten you to it.

There is really no way to know, as the discovery bonus goes to the first person who gets back and sells the data.

So, even if you are the first to discover a thing, you might not get the bonus if someone else discovers it and gets back to sell the data before you do.

If you come across a lot of bodies that have no "first discovered by" tag on them in the system view then you have at least a chance of getting the discovery bonus, but, until you turn the data in, it's a bit like a Schrodinger's Cat.

In any event, though, you get some credits for anything you ping that was previously "unexplored".

Yes, but it's not the discovery I'm concerned with, but the exploration data.

When you arrive in a new system if you see blue messages like 1 New Object Detected followed after scanning by 99 New Objects Detected then that is new exploration data for you and assuming you make it back to a cartographic office worth money, as you are surface scanning the arrival star you can check the system map to see how many objects have a discoverers name against them.

I could be wrong here, very wrong.

My understanding has always been: -

Upon you arriving in a system you've never been to before it will be undiscovered to you, hence receiving the message "X No. of Objects Discovered" upon arrival and on result of you Honking.

If you then carry out a detailed scan on one of the discovered objects, excluding asteroid belts, you will accumulate exploration data. On handing this in you will be paid for it even if the object was already discovered by someone else. Should you have been the first person to have discovered the object, not only will you be paid for your detailed scan but in addition a 50% bonus for its discovery.

You've said that "every system I've come to so far since I left the bubble has been "discovered" but not "explored" I'm assuming that means no cartographic data is available" this unexplored refers to you and you alone, that is that you haven't explored the system by detail scanning the objects, even though some one has been there before you. Go ahead and scan away, excluding the asteroid belts as you don't get paid for these, you will be paid but just won't get the 50% First Discovery Bonus.

I hope that helps clear things up a little for you?

To answer your thread title "Just checking - unexplored? By anyone, or just by me?" = Unexplored just by you.

This visual guide might be of help to you in giving you an idea of the worth of objects scanned. http://imgur.com/a/VJ5wp

Also, if you want to keep an average running total as you explore along with a log of where you've been you might want to consider using Captains Log. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/155545-Explorer-s-Application-Captain-s-Log
