Newcomer / Intro Buying my new ship

I'm gone buy my first ship today hurrah !

I was wandering about something I was told in the Discord channel.

I first came into a situation were a mission sent me to fetch an Item..When I tried to go back after retrieving it ,I found out to my demise that I cant!
The ships mass grow with the cargo and now i'm stranded!
Thankfully I amassed a bit cash when that happened,so was wandering if I should buy a new ship or get a better engine for the jump.
Not one ,but some players ,told me ,that I should first get the sidewinder upgrades..like modules up to A.
Then when I go buy a new ship I should first sell off those costly items I previously bought,as for parts sold you get 100% return, but for the ship as whole only get like 90% or less.

So here comes the day,and I go to sell the parts as advised by those veteran players, and I find out I cant sell anything except the guns... [woah]

Oki so I went to Discord and asked again, people were baffled and had no idea, lol...[haha]

So i'm asking here ,if there's something I missed, as all of those previous wise veterans told me , to first sell my parts ,and here I am facing to sell only the ship ,as I CANT sell the parts ,as they have advised.

Can anyone shade light on their misgivings?

Thank you and fly safe!

Exactly.
Weapons, utilities and optional internals (shield, cargo racks,...) you can sell. But things like thrusters, powerplant, etc.. have to stay. so if you have an A-rate thrusters, for example, just buy the cheapest, smallest thrusters instead and you'll get most of your money back.

The reason why somebody told you to sell modules first is that when you sell the module in outfitting, you get back the price you paid for it. But if you sell the whole ship, you'll get 10% less, so it's better to make her as cheap as possible before selling, to minimize the loss.

Thanks for that info. It will serve in the future.

And check Li Yong Rui controlled stations, if you're near one then go there. You get 10% or 15% discount on ships and modules. You'd want to save all the credits you can save especially when you're just starting up.

And make sure you have insurance money many times over before considering to buy and outfit a new ship!

All all of Li Yong Rui's stations do 15% discount on modules and ships.

When I am selling a ship I try to sell off or replace as much as possible to get the mass down before replacing mass sensitive items.

That is a good advice for more reason than one. Saved money are nice, of course, but for a newcomer, maybe even more important fact it that the insurance is deducted from the ship's price, therefore it's 15% cheaper too! :)

Come to think of it... can you exploit that discount?

Buy a ship in a LYR system, equip it with A-rated stuff (with discount).
Then fly it to a non-LYR system, sell or downgrade the A-rated stuff again (without a discount).
Then fly back to the LYR system and buy discounted A-rated stuff again.
Repeat until rich.

Would that work?

Oh, come on. You can't believe devs are that naive. :D

See my signature for the Active Discounts Thread :D

Yes it was the first thing I tried but no it doesn't work. It does however lower insurance costs which on the biggest ships is very substantial.

In fairness, it worked for the founders world discount for a long time before the devs put a stop to it, so yes, they can be.

OP, when you sell an old ship you only get 90% of it's value back. so you lose 10%. This includes all the upgrades and extra stuff you added to it, however, when you sell or downgrade that stuff, you get full price back. So basically, you only lose 10% on the original ship if you sell the extra and upgraded stuff first. Your upgrades can be worth many times more than the ship itself so it can be a significant amount of cash saved.

No, unfortunately. They were winse to that. Buy @ 15% discount, sell @15% discount, you can't farm cash that way. However it does keep your re-buy costs lower too.
