The Voiceattack Discussion Thread

How is it possible to program it to return to original settings?

How could i possibly know that when I'm setting it up?

When setting pips, just have it balance power first, then you always start from the same state. For example, I use the following combo: balance, 4x weapons, 4x shields, 1x engines. This will give you near max sys, just below half weapons and a pip in engines so that you boost will charge.

With regards to using the power management screen, I could only see this being plausible if all actions always return you to a set point after running (ie the same screen on that panel), but any manual interaction would likely confuse it

Oh for Pete's sake....

How did I not realize that?

You know, with a college education and 30 years of video game experience you'd think I could figure things like that out on my own!

Thanks, Solace!

You're welcome. I enjoyed setting up VA for the first time (and creating some custom voice replies to my commands) :p

Feel free to PM me if you have any other problems, might be able to help.

Edit: Flak's VA Guide is very good if you've not read it.

That's the biggest problem, because the state remains where it was left it seems that you're going to mess it up eventually if you don't exclusively use VA commands for the right hand panel. But then again, virtually everything you need to do on that side can be automated anyway.

On the targeting panel what I'd like to be able to do is select the station, using the target ahead button on a joystick say, and then 'Request Docking' automating the procedure. As far as I'm aware at the moment that's a little problematic due to the station not always being in a set location in a list of targets. Unless someone has a work around for this?

I think someone might be able to figure these things out and release a whole new Voice Attack specifically for Elite...

There's certainly nothing proprietary about what VA is doing, it would just be a matter of tweaking it to adjust to this specific software.

I play FSX quite a bit and there's an outfit called FS2crew that works out some very difficult commands to run a Boeing 737 NGX as well as other ludicrously complicated aircraft by voice control. It seems like figuring out how to do it with this relatively simple interface is positively doable.

First one there could easily make a few bucks and have a little fun along the way!

My panels are setup so that all I need to do is state "target panel" etc and I use up, down, left, right, select to voice through the menus, then "ahead" to face forward or repeat the panel name again, very fast.

be careful of single state commands as they will screw up some more complicated command strings if you mess with them manually or perform a command on the side and forget you did something.

An example of screwing up a long command set would be go silent or stealth or whatever name you want to call it and access the system panel and have everything shut off. Then if you happen to set something on or move left or right on another submenu and use your command to go back to full power things get messed. But then I know you have your menus setup for voice manipulation anyway and the fix is quite fast to straighten things out, even in combat.

its quite fun to have your targets set for voice select, gimbaled lasers setup for voice fire and missiles setup the same way. Fox One! There is a ton of things you can do. I have used 4.5 vap profiles, copied 36 commands, modified them and created several custom strings of my own resulting in 57 commands total. My bug out command is particularly satisfying. :D

Though having a track ir would be a big help and save a couple of commands. :D

Problem with voice attack software (or maybe hardware?)

Hi all

Just got Voice Attack and am trying to set it - i downloaded the PDF thats in one of the forum threads so all seemed to go well.

However, when i speak into the microphone it repeats back to me words i haven't said and as a result doesn't recognise anything in the profile.

EDIT : i do get the red mic "no signal/muted" icon up sometimes, but other times it obviously heres something even though it repeats back the wrong word.

SHORT VERSION OF QUESTIONS

1) are there any software settings in voice attack that might cause this?

2) Is there a secret place in windows where i can turn the mic level up (i've already set it to max in the Realtek Audio Manager)

3) i gather it might just be a problem with a cheap microphone - can anyone recommend a good (mid range) headset and mic setup

4) does VA have a problem with people from Devon! I'm pretty sure my accent isn't that broad :D

LONG VERSION
For example in a moment of frustration i came up with "What the F##k" which turned into "and you are not lost soccer" but the second time i said it i got something completely different "got the clock". Its almost like there is a little gremlin in there taking the ****!

Now i know the mic and voice comms works because i use it to play CIV over LAN with my son through Steam - no problems.

When i speak into VA the levels seem fine (from the little bar along the bottom) however if i try and configure the mic through the voice recognition in win7 then it doesn't seem to "hear" anything, though if i shout it does seem to pick up something. I have the mic levels turned up to max so not sure why there is a problem. Though i did find a screen in windows that indicated the mic level was very low though there was no way to adjust it on that screen

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be welcome.

Thanks

Doc,
Go to the Control Panel (Windows) click on Speech Recognition.
1st do the "Set Up Microphone"
2nd do the "Train your computer to better understand you"

VoiceAttack uses this to learn your voice, the VA programer states its best to run the 2nd option a few times.

A thousand internets to you oh wise commander!
I was frustrated when I couldn't find the 'voice training' option in VoiceAttack.

understand.. that even with training.. the software is still going to miss certain words that are ingrained into your vocal patterns..the trick is to look at the Voice panel while picking out the words you want to use for the commands. choise the words or phrase that is recognized most often.

for me.. VA refuses to recognize when I say the word speed.. it claims i'm saying spend.. its a trial and error process.

BUT if you work at it, you can build quite a list of voice commands. I have all of my power setting, landing gear, ship lights, scanner ranges, FSD and Hyperspace commands on voice.

the power settings I have are both Basic and advanced.. I have full shields, full engines, full guns.. but also have setting for combat situations with both Multicannons and Lasers and a setup I like to call TANK.. its full pips in shields.. nothing in engines and the rest in weapons.. it allows me a measure of safety in a head to head situation where maneuvering isn't the desire.

I would imagine that windows\voice attack might struggle with the varied regional accents. God knows what it will make of my broad Scottish accent :D

i just changed it to commands that it did understand, it understands when i say Cool Running as "Call Running" so i just changed the words to fit :)

thanks all for the help

the voice training definitely made a difference - the word it doesn't seem to like for me is "weapons" which is rather crucial :)

will have another run through the voice training and practice a bit more

HOWEVER - i have decided that my mic is indeed a pile of crap - so would welcome any suggestions for a good quality mike/headset combo

cheers

It really helps to do the training more than once.. Once I did it for the third time, it understands everything I say without a hitch.

just done it a second time and things are indeed getting better - it seems to like "Gun" better than "Weapon" - i find it also helps to put in plural and singular e.g. gun;guns

now, all i need it to do is program in "win dogfight" and i'll be raking in the credits :D

just so you know... the "Win Dogfight" command brings you a complete stop drops your shields and then calls all enemy rude names.

Just one addition here my good friend, you need to click on "ease of access" in control panel, the speech recognition is tucked away in there. Its not evident from just the control panel, esp since most of us (well me anyway) didn't even know it existed before this. :)

Lol, I have the same reservations about my Brummie accent! If the automated phone banking type systems in the UK don't understand me, what hope have I that my pc notebook and sidewinder will !! :D

I will try it though as it seems so 21st century and ideal for ED.

Most problems are due to the quality of your microphone. Also you need to keep your voice and tone measured. If your tone rises during stress, it will have problems

to be honest that would probably give me a better chance than my dog fighting skills :)

still interested in views on a decent headphone/mic set if anyone out there has an opinion

thanks

You can use the VoiceAttack main panel to see what it thinks you are saying.

Like the 'Speed' 'Spend' example someone gave above.
If you say 'Speed' a couple of times and you keep getting - Unrecognized 'Spend'

Go to Edit mode and edit your 'Speed' command so it shows this:

When I say: Speed;Spend
(note there are no spaces between the words and the semicolon)

This will assign both words to that command.
It will then update your list of commands to the following
Speed(multipart)
Spend(multipart)
