Horizons First base assult!

This started when I found a mission to mine 12t of Bromellite in exchange for some Cracked Industrial Firmware. While mining that I got one of those random popup mission messages - to disable an emplacement generator for an Exquisite Focus Crystal! (and 1.8MCr).

I'd never done a base assault before, so I read up on the forums, Reddit and YouTube for the best strategies.

I approached the base (Irens' Folly in Reneru) and loitered for a little too long trying to figure out where my targets were. The base Viper took off and started attacking me. I realised I had got lucky and the base was owned by an anarchy faction - so no system response. I blew the Viper away and started attacking the base with my ship.

I blew up three different generators. During this time the base defenses were nibbling away at my shields, so I had to drift away and let them recharge a couple of times. Eventually the defenses stopped firing, no doubt due to their power generators being blown up. I could them leisurely take out the three skimmers and other surface defenses.

After cruising at low level above the base for a while and not taking any fire, I decided it was time to get the SRV out and find the emplacement generator. On doing that I found two surface defenses and one skimmer I'd missed - easily dealt with in the SRV.

After much driving around I found the emplacement generator, scanned it and completed the mission. Then I returned to my ship - or tried to. I had landed on the Viper landing pad, but I couldn't find any ramps up to it! It was too high to boost up to, so I decided the best idea was to dismiss my ship, then board it outside the base. However, I found that the opening I'd used to get into the base now had a door that was shut. I couldn't get out!

With a bit of persistence, I was able to jump over the base walls to the outside - good thing the planet was low-grav. After leaving I realised I had missed an opportunity to scan the comms terminals for data materials.

The lessons learnt from this:

1. Make sure the base is Anarchy. Trying to deal with system defence forces would have been impossible.
2. Take out all the generators first. See base maps.
3. Don't land on the defense landing pad. Land on the ground.
4. Don't forget the scan the comms terminals.

This mission was great fun and not as scary as I thought it would be.

I'm still wondering what happened with that door when it shut on me?

Excellent tale. It's at times like these, when the game and your responses to it start to create their own narrative, that it's really at its best!

:D

Edit: there's a nice video from Vindicator Jones on using the FGS for a fairly brute-force approach to base assaults (although on reflection I think you had more of an adventure by figuring out your own, possibly less than perfect, way to do it as you went along) ...

Right on, commander. My first base assault didn't go that smoothly at all! :D

One thing - the fact that you ran into a force field/door means that one of the generators came back up. You could have found and re-destroy it, but I agree that jumping over the walls is much more fun. :)

I'd actually watched that YouTube as part of my research. I almost added a couple of dumbfires to my loadout, but decided to keep my turreted lasers instead.

It's interesting that you say the generator "came back up". I'd noticed that when I got into my SRV and had a closer look at a generator that it was reading 100%, so I shot it out again, but I presume this means that if you wait long enough, all the generators will repair and restore (at least partially) the base defenses? So a good idea to nip in and out faster than my leisurely drive.

cool story dude! we play as a group for these ones and they are even more fun! we do it to the "thunderbirds" theme song!

Bwahaha! That must awesome! :D

Yep, if you take a scenic route, you may be booted up to the orbit fairy quick. :p
