Newcomer / Intro Server Issues

So,ever since Ive started laying this wonderful game,I've been having connectivity Issues.

Examples are, waiting when pressing mission board like can take up to 30 sec..or more with an error message like:"Cant reach server please try again"

Stuck in FSD tunnel without getting out.

Sometimes I cant even log on to the game itself,Start option been greyed out for a while..

Wandering,Is this the state of the game's server atm?

Or is it my own Location,ISP ability,in that case,do I need to avoid useing Torrents etc that restrict net use while playing?

Thanks in advance [up]

No, I'm afraid it's something local. I am not experiencing anything like that.

If you are playing in Open, it can eat up quite a lot of bandwidth, while Solo is much less demanding.
In fact I can play Solo even on a train, connected via the phone where there is only an Edge available.

If you play in Open, you'll need at least 10Mbit down and 2Mbit up with latency ideally under 50ms.
You can check how you're doing here: http://speedof.me/

Also the servers are located in UK, so if you are from Australia, Eastern Asia or Western coast of America, you might have these troubles simply because of the distance.

But using a torrent the same time as playing the game isn't really going to help.

There are a few other things you can check:
  • While playing the game also play some music from a streaming site. If the music stream also stops when you lose connection then most likely the problem is on your side or the ISP. If that does occur and you are on Wifi it could be interference from other devices in your household/neignbours who are using the same Wifi channel.
  • Run a Netalyzr report, which is now one of the many recommended actions on the Frontier support note: Connectivity Troubleshooting Steps
  • Another is to check the path to the game servers by running a traceroute.
When you connect to a website – say, howtogeek.com – the traffic has to go through several intermediaries before reaching the website. The traffic goes through your local router, your Internet service provider’s routers, onto larger networks, and so on.

Traceroute shows us the path traffic takes to reach the website. It also displays the delays that occur at each stop. If you’re having issues reaching a website and that website is working properly, it’s possible there’s a problem somewhere on the path between your computer and the website’s servers. Traceroute would show you where that problem is.
More info on interpreting the results: http://www.howtogeek.com/134132/how-to-use-traceroute-to-identify-network-problems/

Or open a ticket and attach a Netlog as detailed at the end of Connectivity Troubleshooting Steps .
At the LaveCon meet/conference it was mentioned by the Devs that Netlogs can be particularly helpful to identify the source of the problem.

I have the same connectivity issues, and I have a 100 Mbit connection with no downloads or other programs active at the same time.

Stuck in witchspace - occasionally. Never permanently stuck, but sometimes it can take around 30 seconds before I drop into the target system.

Takes ages to connect to the mission server - almost every time. I almost always have to wait 10-20 seconds before the mission list will open. Several times during an average session I will get timeout messages, or the board is loaded empty, so I have to get back to the station menu and re-select the mission board.

This is not a game breaker, and I very rarely get disconnected from the servers while playing. But especially the mission boards taking ages to load can be a bit annoying.

You can always give this a try:

https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/faq.php?id=265

It's from F D support and shows how to change your computer's maximum packet size (MTU) down to 1450 from 1500 - it worked for me and others.

It won't hurt to give it a try anyway.

( Mission board and missions take an age to load anyway, even with no other issues.)

I have no other issues with network while playing useing torrents ,streaming video feeds or music etc, only thing that fails most of the time is the game.

Im gone try to play without my torrent on and see how that works.

When I had the "failed connect to transaction server" issue I went through all sort of hoops, tests. checks, etc (I was an electronics engineer and know what I am doing) - I have a over 50Mb broadband, can stream tv from USA, Norway etc and had no issues with anything else ever, full stop, just the amazon servers that E D uses ever since they did something in the early hours of 5th November last year.

The above work-round, changing MTU size, worked for me.

I now have different PC and Hub and don't need the MTU fix - it's a weird compatibility thing.

I thought the servers were distributed regionally across the globe via AWS nodes???

They might be (I never looked into which services FD use on the Amazon), but it still introduces lag into the communication and Elite's code seem to be quite allergic to it.
