Hi Rick, like others said, there are times in Elite, when life simply isn't fair. These moments usually divide players into two groups - those who will give up (and I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Maybe you expected something different from the game, maybe you are too old/young to waste your time learning new things, maybe you just wanted a relaxing gameplay and Elite isn't providing that) and the rest will bite the bullet and keep going. The latter will usually end up loving the game, despite everything that is thrown under their feet, spending thousands of hours in this universe.
I started completely over four times. Sometimes because I lost everything, sometimes because I've hit a point where I've done everything I wanted to do and owned every ship I wanted to own and the game somewhat lost its momentum. I love starting over from scratch. It's the most fun and challenging part.
As for you, maybe you hit a point where your ranks (be it trading or combat) somewhat exceeded your acquired skill. That means you have two options. You could simply stop doing missions, because they always somewhat reflect your rank and the enemies are accordingly difficult, and start doing other things. Trading, smuggling, or exploring. Or you could ditch the Asp for a time being, buy a nice little fighter, like a Viper, Diamondback, maybe even Vulture and go wreak some havoc into the Resource Extraction sites. Good money in there, death in a small fighter is much cheaper, and as a bonus you may find out why you were dying in the Asp.
Keep on keeping on, is my advice. But in a same breath I will add that being stuck in certain mindset is a worse enemy than a Deadly Anaconda. If you die once, you did something wrong, but it also might have been a bad luck, quite frankly. If you die twice, then you clearly did something wrong. If you die four times in the same situation, it's time to sit back and
think what do you need to do different.
We should learn from our mistakes. Only a fool repeats the same mistake indefinitely with an expectation that the result will be different, this time.
