Seriously, i need a detailed "Flight School" vid

thanks all for taking the time out to help whether by text or vid - all very impressive :)

You're welcome.

...looking at the vid the TrackIR (i assume thats what you were using?) looked very helpful...

It is indeed. TrackIR changes the way you interact with a game in an amazing way. And it provides vastly superior situational awareness during a dogfight.

I've been using it in flightsims for years and am so used to it by now that it feels awkward to play a game that doesn't support it.

i think i "get it" now, but need to practice a lot more to get the techniques right. looking at the vid the TrackIR (i assume thats what you were using?) looked very helpful

getting these problems sorted before release is mostly why i bought into beta because i know it will take me ages to get used to things (i usually play games like CiV/EU4/XCOM so this is a big departure for me)

will practice some more this evening and report back

cheers

Track it won't help you turn or aim too much better to be honest. I see it more as cosmetic.

As for turning:

Yaw=precision. Slow and small adjustments.

Pitch is how you turn quickly.

I know people suggest a 50% speed or so. But I disagree.
Or rather, it's more than just that.

Vertical thrusters are so very important in my tight turns and changes in direction.
Lateral thrusters + yaw are great for a slightly faster or rather longer amount of time you can track a target.

Feel free to check out The Elite Armada and our Stream Team section. I am the indie game dev. I have a few highlights up, and my cowers always claim my stream is one of the most helpful.

I show my hotas in streams, and it really helps understand what you "should" be doing to maneuver your ship.

Regardless of that, check us out and join our mumble server. We are always helping each-other and thinking of ways to fly better.

Vertical thrusters are so very important in my tight turns and changes in direction. As well as changing between forward and reverse thrust. I never stay at a constant say 25 or 50%. I constantly change and adjust from forward and backward thrusts. To achieve fast almost stationary turns that allow for immediate direction change and acceleration.

I can sit under those federal fighters for days haha.
Lateral thrusters + yaw are great for a slightly faster or rather longer amount of time you can track a target at a distance.

Let me try and explain better.

- You have the enemy flying towards you at full speed, and you are both firing at each other directly:
1) Ensure you have full power on guns so you can fire for longer
2) Slow down to 25-50% power, so you have more time to fire at them, and you'll have a tighter turning circle when you pass each other
3) Strafe downwards whilst travelling towards them by continuously firing your down thruster. This is particularly effective when they have guns rather than lasers, as you can move out of the way of the bullets that take time to travel to you. Also, roll left/ right 90 degrees every five seconds whilst strafing downwards to make yourself an even harder target
4) When you pass each other you need to turn as quickly as possible so,
5) Put full power to engines. For me this is two taps on a joystick hat so takes a split second. If you haven't already done so, power back to 50%-75% for the best turning circle
6) Begin the turn by first, rolling left or right to the target on your 12 O'clock High position, then pulling back hard on the stick
8) If you are too close to your target (ie, they turned in to you at the same time as you turned in them them), you need to increase your distance to help get guns on. You can do this whilst still turning by...
9) Still pulling hard back on the stick, put yourself in reverse whilst still on 50-75% power, and changing lateral thrust to Down (rather than Up). Hold this for 5 seconds or so and you will zoom away whilst still turning in to them.

Finally - when you have guns on, don't forget to put full power back to guns, and repeat the above from step one.

:)

Had a bit more practice but no luck - though i think i am turning a bit better but most times we just end up in a head to head (previously he always got on my tail)

i think my biggest problem is just not seeing where he is going so not turning in the right direction - the whole dogfight is lost in the first pass

a few more questions:

when "rolling left or right to the target on your 12 O'clock High position" does this mean you roll and then set the joy back to neutral before pulling back?

how do you "put yourself in reverse" - my throttle is on continuous forward - is it just a key press to say "50% Reverse" and if so if you are in this mode does the throttle still work by increasing your reverse speed - how do you get back into normal throttle mode

just to be clear - if pulling back on the stick the "up" thrusters make the turn quicker - likewise if pushing stick forward the down thruster improves things?

cheers

I use TrackIr and the x-52 Pro HOTAS stick. As I stated before, I think full flight control may be harder/ limited on Mouse and Keyboard. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend to get the most out of the game. They are both simply excellent!

- "not seeing where he is going" - Yes, this is a challenge, however, you can see all you need on your radar. Even with track IR, I'm not always looking at them as the radar is more useful. Roll left or right so the are on your 12 O'clock high position, and pull back hard until you have guns on.
- "when "rolling left or right to the target on your 12 O'clock High position" does this mean you roll and then set the joy back to neutral before pulling back?" In the main yes, however, you will always need to make adjustments to this with slight left/ right rolls whilst still pulling back.
- "Reverse" - Look in the controls menu. I have this set to a button on my throttle stick so it's a click of the button by my left thumb which literally takes a split second, and then adjustment on the throttle stick as required. You can also choose to set this as a button that you have to hold to keep in reverse (rather than on/off), depending upon your preference.
- "if pulling back on the stick the "up" thrusters make the turn quicker - likewise if pushing stick forward the down thruster improves things?" Correct. Think about what is happening in the ship, in an up turn (Flight stick back), the addition of the up thrusters means they fire jets underneath the ship and in essence push the ship in to the turn, and visa versa. If you look at turning ships, you can see players do this. Also, don't forget you can mix it up by pulling up on the flight stick AND firing your down thrusters, so although you are turning your nose towards the target, the ship is sliding down and away from it. Stick it to reverse for 5-10 seconds for added effect.

Does that help?

yes indeed it does

just need to practice a lot more, though not got much time over the weekend so so will be back at the controls on monday

In-Game Tutorial

I love Elite - and I have since I was a kid - but I have to admit I'm not the crack pilot I used to be. One thing I'd love to see in the game is a tutorial mission: one that steps you through using each control, with pop-up "press A to Yaw Left" or whatever. This way, you could learn the basics in-game, and practice until you perfected your technique. The Crimson Triumph is tough for me because I'm using the mouse and keyboard and am only certain of half of the controls. I'm feeling that by the time I take on a tough enemy like the Crimson Triumph, I should have been through about five or six easier critters first. Just my opinion. I think some first time players might get frustrated being thrown into something so challenging after only two prior missions, and only one prior engagement!

hi again all

well i was away from the game for a week but after much perseverance i have now completed all the single player missions except for Incursion

the most helpful tips for me seems to have been in the use of "reverse" - i changed the throttle to continuous rather than forward only and this makes a huge difference in getting on the tail of someone who is approaching you head on

i also made better use of power management, particularly boosting to keep up with someone i am tailing

As for docking, have only had one go and it was a complete disaster and after half a dozen attemps i hadn't docked once - gonna have another go on monday - i think the problem was i didn't have the craft level when i was bouncing off the landing pad - quick question do you have to totally power off your engines to complete the land sequence

also on docking - as a newb i could have done with more time to find the landing pad - it doesn't help if it keeps changing seemingly every minute :(
