Newcomer / Intro Is This Game Worth It?

hello space peoples. well the reason I'm posting this is because I've been looking at this game for a good while now and I cant seem to think if I should get it.. I've been feeling down lately so I kinda need a pick-me-up so to speak, but its 30 bucks and I really need to klnow if its good before I try to get the money XD well thank you for your time and plz post or message my steam ( http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198098567836 ) I'm also lookin for cool peoples to play with me if I do get it so feel free to add me for that XD thanks :)

If you like space sims, big ships and a lot of challenges to overcome, Elite is a one of a kind.
It's a sandbox - nobody will hold your hand and tell you what to do. It requires a great deal of self-dependency.

But it's beautiful to look at, community friendly, physical model is great and possibilities are limitless and growing with each update.

Watch some gameplay videos on Youtube to get an idea of how things flow in the game and what can you do and you'll see.

Plus it's Elite Dangerous: Play it for a week or play it longer, you're always going to have some days that are tougher than others.

If you get it play smart. In my opinion it's all about the long game rather than short term gain.

It all depends on what you like. Well you know it`s a space sim- Check.
There`s a MP and SP mode- check.

Now it`s a little more `realistic` as space sims go and what you get out of it depends on how much you put into it. You can be a trader and lead a relatively peaceful life (when not being attacked by pirates) or go bounty hunting and have a very exciting life or just survey planets for cash. Everything has a cause and effect- A risk reward factor that you must take into account on any mission you do.

The immersion of this game is very great (especially with Horizons) as Space Stations chatter to you and will get upset if you don`t obey. Police ships will check you out, pirates will try and pull you out of warp. And we`re not even in Multi-plyer yet! that`s just AI!

Of course with MP it`s a tougher world, it`s pretty much dog eat (which why i stay away while I learn). You`ll definitely need some good guys with you if you intend going out there with noob status, although I suspect it`s possible to do it completely alone if you flee a lot!

Anyway, I recommend this game.

30 bucks will only buy you the base game. You need another 30 bucks to get the Horizons expansion - you need that to enjoy all the latest features e.g. planetary landings and engineers.

There is a new patch release due mid October, it is highly likely there will be a sale to get the game at reduced price around that time.

The game is not for everyone and requires a lot of effort to get the best upgrades. But for me it is great, only game I've played since I started playing it over a year ago.

I would have paid double and still felt I got more than my money's worth for the scenery alone. The 1:1 scale with 400,000,000,000 stars and virgin sandbox just 1000ly from your doorstep. The flight model is one of the better ones I've used, despite the nerfed yaw. It supports HOTAS and VR.
It isn't perfect by any means. There's combat logging, psycho killers and a few buggy features on the back burner. There's the usual "class" balance issues. It's full of placeholders which can go either way. Maybe they'll put something better in, maybe they'll say it's good enough. Your support will only improve its chances though.

Is it worth it? That depends on what you are expecting.

It's not a game for everybody. If you expect an easy-to-play story-based space adventure, I'd recommed Rebel Galaxy rather than Elite Dangerous.

Elite Dangerous is not easy. The learning curve is steep, but manageable if you don't mind referring to external tutorials.

The game can be a bit unfair at times, and there will be a certain amount of frustration. And the game design leaves a lot to be desired in terms of mission design and storytelling.

If none of these flaws are a game breaker to you, then, as others wrote above, you can expect a fantastic space sandbox that you can easily get addicted to. Some people would describe it as a mix of MS Flight Simulator and Skyrim (minus the story), and I tend to agree.

I you decide to give it a go, I would recommend getting Elite Dangerous plus the Horizons expansion and a HOTAS stick. You can play without a HOTAS, but it's not as much fun. I got the Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas Stick X, which set me back $50, but provides good value for money, if you ask me.

I am going to throw a a spanner in the works here and say I find an xbox controller and voice attack is just as good
now I do get that a hotas setup is like what you see in the cockpit great................
but in reality the way fly by wire controls work now traditional flight yolk sticks are in fact on some military aircraft being replaced with flight brick assigned x box type thumb controllers
if you don't need to ever look at your controller "to hell with it you,ve got control!"

Voice is very good, but I always have my controls on standby and I really don`t like gamepads. I find actually harder to use and less intuitive. They only use them in the military because so many people are used to them from console games. What better way to train a soldier for real war than to make it like playing an Xbox game?

I suppose its all down to personnel choice, and yea if your used to a console controller Muscle memory saves training costs and control column cost for the military but they would not use them if the same level of control was not achievable
if you can home run a Coriolis with flight assist off I don't care if you are using a moblil phone app you have good control pilot

The game polarizes. There are some people (a lot of the folks here) who like it. A lot.

There are other people (quite a few of them are next door, in Dangerous Discussions), who claim to hate it. A lot. Although for people who claim to hate this game, they seem to be spending an awful lot of time on it....

As for getting it - I'm well inside the 'do it' faction. Although, tbh, 30 bucks won't get you far. As the saying goes, the first dose is free. IIRC, you could run the tutorial missions for free. You can get CQC/Arena (same thing) for ~8 bucks. Base game is 30 bucks, Horizons another 30 (or get both and have a few goodies thrown in). As usual, people will expect a discount somewhere in autumn/winter (either 2.2. release, black friday, christmas or any combination of those).

If you're unsure, go over to Youtube and check out a few of the videos - for a general introduction, I'd recommend the Ghost Giraffe channel, although they have (and use) a lot of Horizons (i.e. planetary landing) stuff. But their videos show one facette of ED very nicely: there is no mission/story line to follow (or rather, the story line a.k.a. Background Story is too large for any single player to follow), you have to make your own stories. Some people like it, others don't.

And finally: if you decide to buy the game, consider buying it directly from Frontier Developments. Steam gives the game exposure, sure - but they're also taking a large cut off the game price.

Oh, and if your forum name is in any way indicative of your age - you're amongst the younger players then :p

We have quite a few dads and granddads here, the oldest player I've seen lately here in the newcomers forum is 70...

I estimate you will get a minimum of 3 months gameplay for your 30 bucks, by this time you will have decided for yourself if you like it or not. If, like me you find it absorbing, challenging & addictive, you will easily get another 9 months out of it before you find yourself wondering what else there is to do. By this time there will be new content anyway. My advice - buy it, you won't want to play another game for a long time.

get a free game like pioneer space sim or oolite play it for a while and you will get a very basic gist of this ultra polished multiplayer capable game if you don't like those games one bit, this game is probably not for you.

That is not entirely accurate. I know several people who play ED just for the looks and vistas, but hate every second the game tries to force a gameplay upon them. :D
But other than that, I agree. One has to get oneself into this sandbox mindset and then it's all shiny.

hence the basic gist and probably remarks
but yea sell a granny about covers it for me but being an 84er I was worried my opinon may be biased to more degrees then ones sextant :D

If the OP or anyone else is interested there is a sale on E D on Steam (33% off):

Base game = £13.39

Commander Deluxe Edition (a pack containing game, Horizons and a "Commander pack" {some in-game goodies}) = £26.79

I think the "Commander Deluxe Edition" is a real bargain.

Sale ends Monday I think.
