Ship recommendation for mining in VR?

Greetings Commanders and fellow VR-heads :)

i'm currently contemplating which ship would be the right to use for mining in VR (proud Vive owner).

I have mined in 2D before in my Anaconda, and while the Anaconda cockpit is great I still feel it's not perfect. (and if only I could turn off the ceiling lamp behind/above the chair...)

Yesterday I was flying my FDL through an ice ring, and somehow everything felt bigger and better with that cockpit.

I guess the ASP-X (that I already own) should be a good fit, but I find it limited compared the the Anaconda (less active limpets and so on).

Can you go mining in a Type-9, and would that make sense? How is the cockpit view in a Type-9? Or better a Type-7? Or Something else?

Thanks and see you all out there,
Commander Benderson

T9 is possibly the best cockpit in game, to bad it's attached to one of the worst ships in it.

But as for mining it should be great, lots of internals and whatnot, just don't expect anywhere near the combat capability you get in a conda.

T7 is also getting a decent upgrade in 2.2 so worth checking.

Remember you only loose 10% on ship cost, you can sell modules for no loss.
So in essence a t9 only costs about 9 mil.

Given engineered modules make it harder to switch ship roles, a cheap ship for mining would be a good idea for me too.

I'm thinking T6 or Keelback, possibly even an Asp Explorer?

Interesting, I have been using VR for months and upgraded from a mining python to a mining Conda. I wont go back. Carrying hundreds of drones (mostly for prospecting improves my chances of finding those special painite roids) and the conda still has teeth even when outfitted for mining.
Although I do like sitting out in the roids for long stretches, listening to music.

Well at least module storage will help with that.

Indeed, and you can always swap to external view if you want an unobstructed vista.
I find the cockpit in each ship to be part of the experience, limits and all.

I love the Annie for mining, you're right, the massive internal space makes for quick collection and storage, with a top refinery too.

And fit reasonably, you can move about the res site relatively easily, and pop prospectors out without worrying about how many you have on board.

I think the mian issue is - if you have an engineer-modded ship, its harder to switch between the mining and other roles. Ok its not so hard switching between miner and armed freighter, but combat Annie -> miner is much harder to do without scarficing the improved modules.

Ironically, perhaps a Federal Corvette would be ideal for mining - having better maneuverability than the Conda.

The LAKON cockpits are very nice for mining. Nice big field of view. I've been mining in a T9 for ages now. I love it... Of course a smaller LAKON like the Asp, T6 or T7 is fine also.

Well... being in the game myself, I know that mining equipment certainly ain't cheap, but a mining Corvette is taking it to a whole new level! :D

I tried to use my cutter for mining.
I quickly went back to the conda, it's just to unwieldy in a asteroid field, and it has too much cargo, I spent three days worth of gaming sessions just to fill it, and honestly that got boring.

I think the new t7 will be very capable for mining.
Anyhoo, here's my setup for a mining t9 https://coriolis.io/outfit/type_9_h...w18eQ==.EwBjYRhAWXmCioivNQ==?bn=mining bessie

I know the lasers are a bit redundant, there is no way you can actually take a fight in one, unlike the anaconda.
I also dropped shields to a class 5, since you can use the class 6 for a fighter bay if you so choose and you only loose about 30MJ sheilds.
(and yes, power is tight, hence why the miners are in group 5, the lasers in group 4, if you turn off the lasers the miners will turn on. But if you want to shoot something, just turn the lasers on and only the miners will shut off)

With the SLF's I'd now feel a bit more confident about taking a T9 out mining. Haven't tried outfitting one as a miner in beta yet but will do.

I retro fitted my Python not so longer ago to do a spot of mining and that worked just fine. Plenty of space in a Python for everything you need and still able to pack decent weapons and shields. Easily good enough to pull stuff in for missions. As a serious money making alternative though, I'd go for something bigger.

I've just done a a few long mining sessions in the Cutter last weekend and whilst it takes a while to fill, I quite enjoyed it due to watching an entire season of game of thrones and other things on a large "holographic" screen using OpenVRDesktopdisplayPortal.

Properly positioned and with the right transparency settings, it feels like there's a holographic beamer built right into the cockpit.

I'd highly recommend it for large ship VR mining :).

Hehe cool, wish there was something native like that for the Rift. Not tried SteamVr yet with the Rift/ED.

Problem is, I'd get stuck, mesmerised by Emilia Clark's amazingly mobile eyebrows... or crash into an asteroid :D

Asp Explorer for me, but I do my mining in fringe space, well outside of the core.

A T-7 would work as well. Decent cargo space, but would need an escort. Python, if you can afford it.

T9 Build:
This is a max cargo of 480 tons, geared toward long mining sessions.
The 5A and 3A Collectors give you a total of 5 active limpets which is plenty.
Single 1A Prospector limpet controller is all you need.
Slightly underrated power plant and engines give it a 16 ly jump unladen.

Firing group suggestions:
1- (A) Mining Lasers (B) Prospectors
2- (A) 5A Collector (B) 3A Collector
3- (A) Beam Lasers (B) Chaff

Might it help to outfit with a fighter hanger when Guardians comes out? Use that as an escort?

The T7 can't fit an SLF hanger. Only the Keelback, T9, Fed Gunship, Beluga, Anaconda, Cutter, Corvette. Requires a C5 slot or a C6 if you want to carry 2 ships, but since you can only launch one at a time..... the latter option seems kind of pointless, although it does mean you can carry fighters with different loadouts and abilities.
