VR Gunna give it the Oculars Rift a go.

G'day all,
well after reading all the threads, looking at countless vids and tossing the pros and cons about I have made the leap and purchased the Oculars Rift from Amazon. They offered a better price and cheaper shipping to Australia than Occulas themselves.

I would like to ask a question about the installation of the rift to ED, just so I am prepared for when it arrives.

Is there a special edition of ED Horizions that I must use or do I just plug the Occulas Rift in to my pc port and start ED as normal.

All advise and hints most gratefully received

Also you need to enable 3rd party "non oculus" applications to run in the oculus application AND you will need to go into elite settings and select "HMD Headphones" under the 3D settings (going from memory here).

The Rift comes with good instructions on how yo install the hardware and set it up for your eyes.

If you're running ED now, you can enable the option GMANTOR mentioned in the Settings tab of the ocuklus Home software. Then ED will run just as normal from the desktop launcher. There's no real need to download it all again.

Once you've got the Rift attached and set up, you need to launch ED and set the display options to HMD and exit out.
Then re-start the ED launcher, hit play, and Oculus Home will start (you can minimise it) and then ED will start. Pop the Rift on your bonce, and look at the box in the grey startup world to turn it on.

By that time ED should have loaded and you'll see the different VR starting hangar, with an Eagle and an SRV in it. The menu may be way off, look around for it. Hit start, and get in your ship, then bind a key for "Recentre HMD" (not the same as re-centre view).

Youll likely need to adjust your graphics settings... there's tons of threads in here, and we'll help you out no worries if you get stuck.

Good luck Commander, and welcome to VR!

Gentlemen.
thank you for your input as it's just what I was looking for, the first basic steps for setting up out of the box.
I agree with you that there is a great coverage of the rift on this forum and I am slowly working thru the threads.
The rift shipped today, so if it arrives within 10 days from the US of A, I will be pleased.

Now another question, apart from ED, what other programmes are worthwhile, is there for example educational, and travel?
I saw a trailer of "there be whales" that looked interesting although I believe it was for the vive. I can't wait to get the missis to experience VR, that should be a hoot.

Come Christmas I will order the hand controllers if I think they are worthwhile.
Cheers and thanks again

Once you have picked yourself up off the floor with ED, and are looking for the next "Wow VR" moment, you should take a look at Aerofly FS2 on steam. It's a flight simulator where you sit in the cockpit. They have excellent support for VR. Sit in, and fly a highly detailed 737 or 747 and many others.

Gamer 101,
thanks for the lead, I have both FSX and P3D, but as yet have not even thought of playing them with the VR headset. I will look up Areofly FS2 when the VR headset arrives.

Here's a Reddit forum of people's favorite games. I'll assume you like cockpit games, so I'll also suggest War Thunder (free) and House of the Dying Sun for X-Wing style combat missions ($10). For assymetrical gameplay (one person in VR, others not), "Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes" is a blast (pun intended).

For other cool experiences, look up "The Chair" and "Back to Dinosaur Island." There are a bunch of VR movies on Oculus Home, like "Henry" and "Invasion" which are fun to watch.

Soda, thankyou.

Alex,
thankyou for taking the time to write up your experiences with the O Rift and ED in VR
I have added this link to my header bar so I can read your thread and the links and advice while I wait for the O Rift to be delivered.

Just one question for the moment, have you brought yourself the O Rift hand controllers and the things that locate you in a room( I believe that 3 are needed) .
Would be most interested in your comments on this as eventualy I will purchase them to have the added imersive experience of programmes other than E.D.

kindest regards and once again thankyou for your detailed threads.

No problem, glad you found it useful.

Re: the Oculus Touch hand controllers (which is what you're referring to there), they're not actually out yet (expected December 6 I believe). You can pre-order them but I haven't done that yet. I'm DEFINITELY interested so will probably be making that an early christmas present to myself! I'm not 100% sure that you'll actually need three sensors to make them work tho', I think adding more sensors gives you better "room scale" support (i.e. better tracking as you move around) but I don't know if they're absolutely necessary for Oculus Touch.

If/when I do get the hand controllers I think this will be my first purchase ...
