(re)starter Ships

I know that we're all in Beta mode just now so the starting options are limited, but a quick clarification.

If I've Kickstarter backed the Explorer option (so a Long Range Cobra Mk3 & 3000cr) what happens if I destroy that ship and have to go back to a "starter" ship (of course assuming I'm cash poor :))

Will it be a Sidewinder or will it be back to a Long Range Cobra MK3?

A lot of backers would love to know the answer to that :D

Best guess is that you'll be offered a choice of all your starter ships as freebies (without the cargo/cash bonus).

I'm reasonably certain that a Kickstarter pledge that included a "one-off" starter ship upgrade would have been a disaster. Plus I'm pretty sure I've seen a dev. comment that this starter ship would be accessible from all three character slots so it reasonable to assume that this would be your fallback ship at all times.

Actually, from the phrasing in the backer app, we aren't offered "starter ships", we're offered starts.

That implies that they are once per character deals. If a character loses the ship it started with, then it's gone.

All the KS reward tiers that include ships use the phrase "Have the option to start in...", so it is entirely possible that we can only access them when we start a new commander.

I'm hoping not, I have options on an Eagle and 4 different Cobras :D

Agreed, but it could go either way, and it's not been clarified.

I don't believe so.

It takes some pretty serious reading between the lines and wishful thinking to read "option to start in" as anything other than a once per character deal.

Free Cobras for life gives a huge advantage over non-backers, I can't see that happening.

I would assume it means that you would have the option, whenever you start a new character, of choosing one of those starter packages.

I wouldn't of thought you would get another free one each time it is destroyed.

I think you're right, and I hope you're wrong :D

I disagree.
Losing a ship without having the insurance buffer is unlikely to happen more than a couple of times in a pilot's entire career, especially after the first time; no-one forgets *that* particular pain quickly.

I'd imagine that the starter ship is just that, its a ship (and perks) you get when you start a new commander. If you manage to loose that ship then you'll have to buy it back via insurance just like what happens at the moment

I asked a very similar question on the Beta forum.

I wonder how long it would take to earn the insurance cover (bearing in mind many of the players with these rewards won't have the Alpha insurance reduction) for some of the more expensive options.

And, how 'twitchy' said players will be as they try to earn that re-purchase buffer, or maybe they'll be less careful as they have nothing to lose until they have that credit buffer, it's just as easy to restart the game with the reward ship.

On a sort of related note, will this mean a fresh 'Kickstarter Reward' ship every time you restart the Ironman mode?

TBH, it would be very uncool if the LR Cobra would just respawn.

If my Serenity would blow up, it would be lost forever too! BROWNCOATS FOREVER!

If you restart the game you'll lose all your rankings, reputation and contacts. I think even on a relatively young character, those will represent far more than the value of a ship.

This is something I've been thinking about, since I intend to play ironman (and die) a lot. I'd imagine it works exactly the same, but the advantage is obviously amplified for ironman players.

I going to start in the Sidewinder initially, but the temptation of the advanced starts will always be there, and after a few deaths I might succumb. I wonder if Frontier will do something to curb this, or maybe allow non-backers to unlock some ironman starts during play, to even the playing field.

I also intend to play Iron-Man mostly. I have access to all the starter ships and although it doesn't look like there will be a HUGE advantage from the standard ones I hope that special care is taken to keep Iron-man balanced. The insurance perk for early backers I think should be non-applicable in Iron-man for example. But anyway we shall see. I have high hopes from what I have read on the DDF that game balance is very high on the priority list of things to get right, especially considering it will be a game that includes PvP.

didnt realise people will starting off in cobras at release due to pledges .
I came late to the party and just bought into premium beta

Can you still pledge to get a better starting ship?
