GUIDE: Planet sounds and how to know everything from System Map.

Alright. i think the latest updates I've made to this tool are going to be enough for some time to come. It's now a bit more similar to the look-and-feel of the System Map, and what's left to do is to increase the catalog which can be done pretty much any time new objects are found.

Other than that, I need to do a bit of testing on landscape phones and tablets, to see how things hold up. The support is currently more extensively tested on desktop and portrait phone layouts, which seem to work ok.

Please do test and channel feedback!

Until next time

I can't believe I found this thread just now!!!!!!!

I'm on Xbox One since the beginning and exploration is my main trade.
I new about the different sounds planets make but this thread and the tool are just plain awesome!!!
So much kudos to all you guys who have invested so much time in putting this together.

Thank you so much, this just adds so much more to this allready impressive game.
I used to play Elite on the Commodore 64 in the early 80's, who could ever dream back then that we were gonna get this in the future!!

This is an excellent and helpful guide, Commander! I'm currently creating a program (like a matching game) to help Commanders hone their skills at identifying planets using the system map. It will incorporate system map images of those planets, as well as the sounds you have collected. I would like to share it on Reddit and the Frontier forums once complete, but as it uses your work I would like to have your permission first. If you could also make sure it's okay with the Commanders who assisted you, that would be appreciated.

Sorry for the late reply, have been out of game for 8 months or so. Of course you can use my material for your guide, if still interested.

After 8 months out I came back, and it seemed planet sounds where gone... But raising up music volume a little, they came back!!!

The technique is still usefull, I could spot an couple of ELW with no doubt, and that was good since they where 60k Ls from landing point.
Another pesky blue colored HMC with continents did not fool me, 120K ls travel saved.

To me it doesn't seem sounds changed much, and the recordings are still accurate.
So it seems this stone age guide still have its purposes.

Has anyone checked the planet sounds in the system map in the 2.2 beta? I find it hard to hear them, even after doing all the steps suggested in the OP.

Speaking of which, not sure if it's a typo or if something has changed in the beta, but things like "Stellar Cartographics Music" are NOT under some "Sound Effects" but rather under "Music". There is only a "Sound Effects" volume right now, which I pushed all the way.

Anyway, just pointing out that in the 2.2 beta, the sounds are not that obvious to hear...

Welcome back Akira :)
Thanks Erimus!!!! ATM fiddling with RNGeers, but I saw what you are doing with Colonia and will come soon (TM).

You are right, I have to edit that part of the guide. Usually fiddling with the music volume slider a bit revives planet sounds. Music must be unmuted, and maybe probably now it needs a 5% slider to activate planet sounds. Didn't check the beta but it happened every time they apllied a new patch.

In 2.1 I can confirm they didn't change planet sounds tough, altough i didn't listen to all the gas giants and exotic things. But ELW are the same.

It doesn't matter how blue and green they are, no chirping = HMC. Bubbles = WW even if it has arcipelagos

With these settings, I hear the planetary sounds perfectly. Even though I can spot an ELW on sight, it's still nice having the birds confirm it before I go 500,000Ls.

Well, i think you can spot ELW also with smell, since you have discovered hundreds!!!! Also you proved me wrong, i tought Random was the best way to find them, but your technique gives so much consistent results, and numbers don't lie when they are as big as yours. Dmass systems with an F star are the best probability to find them, ignoring M stars could make you miss some, but there are so many Ms it's not worth checking them from time/success ratio. (I'm lurking your threads lol). One day i'll use your technique to find ELW in a particular sector that is very dear to me.

Thanks for the picture, for sure sliding the music volume to the max and thicking only "Stellar Cartographics" is the best. I'm looking for a middle ground solution since many players want to listen also to other ingame music but not at 100% Volume, while others want the music muted to listen to their tunes or chat. For now I'm keeping the music volume at 25% but thicking all the items, so i can hear planet sound at full volume and have the other musics at bearable volumes.

With 2.2 about to go live I'll wait a little before looking better into it, and will try a solution that's viable for the vast majority of players, but since even the sounds setting are not easy in Elite, using a picture like your will be the best solution, so thanks for the suggestion!

I've made a tool for you explorers that would like to have a bit more interactivity when trying to figure all this out. I've taken huge inspiration from the amount of meticulous work put in by CMDR Akira and associates when doing this.

Just tell me what you think after having had a look at http://www.objectscanner.net/

If you find this useful at all I'll try and spend more time into expanding the catalog to make it more complete and also mobile-friendly.
