HELP! Need to reinstall and dont know how

Over the last few days the game has been crashing a lot and freezing.

I'm not very technical.

How do I reinstall it without losing my HUD colours, graphics and control settings?

A really simple step by step guide that an idiot could follow would be really appreciated.

Thanks :)

Unfortunately I have no screenshots, but does your Elite Dangerous launcher still work?

If so: you can find the uninstall option by selecting a version of Eilte Dangerous on the bottom left (next to the 'Play' button). After selecting the version you want to reinstall, go to 'Options' on the top right corner of the screen, after clicking that select 'Uninstall Game' from the menu.

After uninstalling, the 'Play' button changes to 'Install'. Now you can reinstall your game hopefully. :)

Ok basically copy out the files you have changed that you want to keep somewhere safe so the un-install program doesn't delete them as it only searches the places it expects to find them.

To do this:

Go to:
D:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\Products\elite-dangerous-64

Your exact location may be different if installing on C drive etc or on steam (Prog files->steam->steamapps->common->Frontier is the normal in that case).

Control schemes folder - Copy that somewhere safe like the desktop etc.
Graphicsconfiguration.xml file in that same folder should keep your graphics and HUD*

*Note: If you have use anything that puts additional files in you'll need those too as a fresh install won't have them

Ok the re-install process:
Go uninstall the game via launcher - Options - un-install.

Re-install the game and find the new install folder. Should be same place but with fresh files.

Delete the control schemes/graphics configuration and copy your old one in.

With any luck everything should work, the one risk is if you used re-shade which added/changed other files and you miss one then it'll cause issues as the modification will try to load something that isn't there. I don't know enough about re-shade etc to know which files it edits/adds (if any).
Worst case you loose the graphics edits and have to re-do those. The HUD and control bindings should be a fairly safe bet provided 2.2 update doesn't screw with them.

If you bought this on steam you can just open your Library and re verify all your files. It will place all the base files back in the correct location and fix and broken files.
It should not mess with your HUD.

Just right click on the app in Steam and there should be an option to look at local files and then under that should be an option to re verify files.

I also think there is a file verifier in the FDEV launcher as well. Think its at the top under the little settings gear icon.

Those things are as good as a reinstall for most things. I would also check my video driver if I were you. That seems to be the reason behind most of my ED crashes.

Assuming you use Windows 7 64, non-steam?

To back up your control settings, browse to the following folder - you should see a file called Custom Binds (I renamed mine and can't remember what the default name is, just copy them all to be safe):

C:\Users\PC Name\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

This file should have all your graphics/custom HUD colour settings. You'll probably find yours in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files(x86) (instead of C:\Games) as my install is in a custom location:

C:\Games\EliteDangerous\EDLaunch\Products\elite-dangerous-64\GraphicsConfiguration.xml

You can uninstall ED from the launcher. Make sure the version you want to remove is selected in the list, then click on Options from the menu at the top of the launcher and select 'Uninstall Game'.

Hope that helps!

I hope I'm not mistaken, but if you're running Elite from Steam, you don't need to reinstall it. Just let Steam verify the files, which will take up to a few minutes.
