Engineers Fastest way to Gather Unknown Fragments for Palin?

What is the fastest way to get Unknown Fragments to unlock Palin? Most of what I've read suggest that systems within about 150 ly of Merope will spawn USSs labelled as "Anomaly Threat 4" that contain Unknown Artefacts which can then be destroyed to produce Unknown Fragments. The issue here is finding these USSs as I've spent nearly an hour jumping between systems near Merope without having any of these Anomaly USSs pop up. Most of these systems are unexplored with no cartographic data available for purchase (I don't have a discovery scanner equipped in my current loadout) so I've just been jumping between systems and flying around the star hoping for these USSs to appear. Am I missing something here or am I suppose to just park my ship in orbit around Merope and wait for Anomaly USSs to spawn?

Its within 130-150 LY, its a band. You're simply too close to Merope.

Thanks, that completely changes things. I had misunderstood the 130-150 ly range that I saw quoted on the forums and though it meant the distance where UAs spawn wasn't an exact distance from Merope, I didn't realize it was a narrow "band" instead of an approximate distance. I guess it's time to turn around and head back to the bubble. :)

HIP 14479

Get above/below orbital plain and head out toward the last planet.

Thanks, I'm there now and have already started to find some of the Anomaly USSs. The 3X mat collection change is helping quite a bit here as each Unknown Fragment I pick up counts as three in my inventory.

Glad to help. And, yes the 3 up certainly does expedite that job. I did it both ways.

There was a crashed Anaconda that had a UA, but unfortunately it got deleted (again).
I got all my UFs in about 10 minutes by logging in and out.

Really? I can't for the life of me figure out why?:p

Just finished collecting enough Unknown Fragments, it was quite easy finding the Anomaly USSs in HIP 14479, they spawned throughout the entire system. I was typically flying 500-4000 ls from the main star as I didn't have a scanner to scan the system and I found enough Anomaly USSs in around 30-45 minutes (I was multitasking doing other things during that time and could have accomplished it even faster if I had focused on the task). I'm heading back to Palin now to hand in all the fragments from the poor little UAs that I rammed while they really were just minding their own business, not hurting anyone. I suppose I could always say I felt "threatened" by the ship scan or something. I would sort of feel bad for them, but apparently it was all for SCIENCE (it was really all for dirty drive tuning, but whatever).

Spent 30 minutes at HIP 14479 last night and now have 21 fragments. Mostly near the outer two planets.
.
They make a freaky screaming noise when you shoot them in the head with a mining laser [alien]

You monster!

But it was for SCIENCE! Palin made me do it!

They make a freaky screaming noise when you shoot them in the head with a mining laser [alien]

I rammed them instead of shooting, mostly because I hate the idea of shooting helpless animals in games (or whatever the UA actually are) and also for "plausible deniability" when the Thargoids show up. "No, I didn't shoot your pet UA at all Mr. Thargoid. It sort of ... impacted ... on my Python's hull ... as I was boosting into it. Yeah I'm really sorry about that, but you won't believe how fast my ship goes now!"

So after all this fragment hordeing, there's the task of getting palin to grade 5. Does anybody know how much exploration data he needs to jump from 1 to 5 by any chance?

Just roll some upgrades to level rep with Palin, I did that this afternoon with the mats I happend to have with me when I gave him the fragments. The Grade 1 and 2 upgrades are trivial (literally something like 1 Nickel) and the Grade 3-5 upgrades aren't that difficult either. The only items I didn't have with me already were some CCM composite I bought from Darnielle's Progress located right in the Maia system and I also searched some USS/Nav beacon in the system to get a few Heat dispersion plates that I needed, the other mats I had already gathered previously. With the blueprint requirements being so much lower now in 2.1.05 it's not worth grinding exploration data to level Felicity or Palin, you might as well just craft a few simple modules and go all the way from Grade 1 to Grade 5 in under an hour, whereas it used to take around 1 hour of exploration data just to level to Grade 3.

Does the HIP thing still work? I've been here 30min and got two USS of which one was useful. At this rate it's going to take a while and since I'm Rifting I can't even watch movies while I "play" the game.

I did the same.

I figured rather than catch one in the wild (cruel) I found one that had already been captured by a ship that then crashed. The UA survived but was clearly not going to last much longer (in my expert view of Alien possibly life forms) so I figured it was better to have it's memory live on. I'll always remember you, little girl (All Thargoids are female), your soul lives on in my now slightly faster ships.

Satisfied that I'd taken the honourable high road towards unlocking Palin I then instance switched a few times to get the rest.

So no Thargoids need to come after me, okay?

Ok, I found and delivered my 25 fragments to Palin.

Of course, that's not a multiple of 3, so I have a couple left over.
What use are they?
