So you want to know about the Formidine Rift? (Part 3)

The vain queen rides a giraffe that remembers her daughter's hero.

There's something face-palming obvious about that sentence that no one's mentioned. I'm going to leave that hang and see how it pans out and hopefully come back for a mass face-palming. Seems to be an unknown know of a known unknown.

They're looking forward to Polaris?

AFAIK you can only see that configuration of the constellations from Sol at a particular time of the year. Cass on top of Camel with Perseus slightly behind and below Camel.

Otherwise I'm not sure what you're going on about. But I'd like to know :D

Would that happen to coincide with the time Kahina was visiting Sol?

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet but 'remember' could be read as 're-member' - i.e. the opposite of dismember. So if we're interpreting 'daughter's hero' as Medusa then cryptically it works and actually means something about re-attaching Medusa's head.

I've been meaning to post this for a while but a. haven't had chance and b. don't have a clue whether that interpretation could be applied in-game.

Anyway I thought I'd research (well I say research... I googled it) re-attaching Medusa's head a little bit further before posting and that's where things go a little bit weird...

...On 22nd March 2012 a Medusa re-membering ceremony was conducted by an organisation called 'The Seven Sisters Mystery School'…

I can’t remember if it’s already been mentioned but there’s various Medusa and Salome connections/parallels via Oscar Wilde…

Anyway, the whole thing generally seems to be a load of nonsense, and I suspect there’s not actually any in-game relevance but it does suggests that 're-membering' is a legitimate possible interpretation.

Also for anyone interested in the historical roots of myths and legends, there was a suggestion that Medusa may have been based on a priestess of Athena or the queen of a North African tribe.

Kahina was in Sol during February/March.

It looks like those 3 constellations were smack in the middle of the northern, sky back in February 21st (if someone could confirm?) and if the line on the side that makes a right angle represents the shoulders of Cassiopeia, then she appears to be riding Camelopardalis at that time (in that case her legs point towards Camel., again if someone could confirm). I gotta say that I'd be pretty disappointed if what we are looking for turns out to be somewhere in that area though, so far from the RR line. I really want to believe that Reorte to Riedquat is not a precise way of pointing at something 10000LY away, I really do. But the problem is that we extrapolated the coordinates of the RR line using precise math and we were even able to find the rift that way. So I dunno...

I think you get that possition at some point during the night, about half the year.

The generally accepted Rift area is a gap between galactic arms, running essentially perpendicular to the RR line, for hundreds of LY.
We didn't have to extrapolate the coordinates as much as look at a map.

Imagine being given directions to the English Channel - follow the line between Sheffield and Chesterfield until your feet get wet.
You're gonna find the right area even if you stray from the exact SC line.

Stupid planetary rotation messing up the clues.

*from Earth

You should be able to get that configuration at any time from most points in the Sol system

Makes sense. One doubt: What do we make of "Once you get there (the rift) you need to plot a way through (or across)"? Does the rift extend all the way to the H&S general area too?

The problem here is that the book clues (R&R Line, plot a way across the Rfit) do not correlate nicely with the Galnet clues (EAFOTS, Heart & Soul).
The Galnet clues point to our side of the Rift (at least, the big gap between galactic arms with not many stars in it) while the book says look on the other side.

To continue my analogy - Heart & Soul are Salisbury, EAFOTS is the New Forest and we're not sure if we're supposed to be searching there, or in France.

Frankly, the new Galnet clues only make sense to me if they're interpreted purely as a direction the same way to the RR line. If they're supposed to provide more detailed information then they're just bloody confusing.

Ah ha! But did you look down and find the magic sea shell with "you win" written on the inside?
Is it on the English side, the French side, high tide, low tide, perhaps it gleams in a full moon or is it a new moon,,what if its not a shell but a pebble, or a pattern of shells, pebble or pebbles and shells of a pattern of not pebbles and or not shells,,, what if you stand on the shore staring in the heavens say look can you see it, does a crowd gather to look up and try to see what you're not seeing?

Cassiopeia going over the top fast is an apparition, an appearance caused by telescope north being different from polaris. It makes it look as though the path is an elliptical orbit like a comet that zips around the sun at its closest highest speed. Doubt it means anything since everything going past that point does the same thing but it's interesting to watch.

If the do not jinx it thing works out or doesn't, intend to head back out to the far formidine and take that jumponium route some lone wolf traced out that Dehzz was so hot to get to. If you project the two parallel cor patrol lines out further they head in that direction and cant go further that way than that. Have the 62 lyr "Mungo Park" [Mungo Park: presumed eaten by cannibals, credited for popularizing the let's explore Africa craze thus reducing the tawt pop of the UK] fitted out with 60 Lvl 1 jumps and 30-40 each of Lvl 2 and 3, probably with equal results.

Dude, you may wanna cut back on the Onionhead a little.

That's what's killing me. Or perhaps the old woman knew of two ways to get to the same place? The RR line is what she used to help Salome find it but she used the H&S/EAFOTS way to get there herself instead? Or, the RR line is what she remembers after they deleted her memory and the H&S/EAFOTS is what was stored in the ship's memory (the old lady stored it in the ship memory before her own memory was deleted but then forgot about it since her memory had been deleted?)?

Oh, one more thing has been nagging me: the sentence "The vain queen rides 'a' giraffe...". Why 'a' giraffe and not 'the' giraffe, if she wanted to indicate Camelopardalis? When i read 'a giraffe', it makes me think that perhaps it's not necessarily referring to Camelopardalis, in which case it would have read 'the giraffe'?

I frankly do not know, however till I see a better interpretation I will stick to : pointer to the area close to the triple constellation boundary.

I'm working at a sky map in gal coordinates with all the Rift clues & search areas indicated. Should be done next week or so.

For the moment I got this one, but it's rather basic (but get the idea accross)

Not to mention the dark systems (later clarified by Drew to mean brown dwarfs) are really only found so far below the galactic plane the RR, Heart and Soul, and EAFOTS clues become utterly useless.

Not sure if i am interpreting your drawing correctly but if we draw a line from Sol to the 3 constellation's boundaries and keep going, will that line intersect the RR line at some point?

No. Never.

The more or less touch oposite edges of the eafots sector.
