NPC police just blew me up, apparently unpreventably...?

I landed on a planet near a "low security" outpost. Scanned a couple data things, triggered a trespassing alarm, left. This made me wanted. I tell you about this because it's the ONLY thing I can think of that might have triggered what just happened to me.

I proceeded to land on a station orbiting the planet to take care of my fines. Found I didn't have any fines to pay. Shrugged. Looked at the passenger mission list, got distracted, left the station. Realized I forgot to grab the mission I wanted. Re-docked, using auto-docking, from max distance of 7.5km. Took forever. No problems.

Landed. Grabbed the mission. Exited the station. The police proceed to kill me IN MY NEW CUTTER! Lost 11m, for no reason. Actually, 11m is what I owed. Thank GOD for being able to borrow money from the game to partially cover insurance costs, or I would have quit right then and there, as the entirety of my time in Elite is invested in this thing and its fitting.

I'd like an explanation or my credits back. Either one would be fine. For reference, I'm not a member of any power, and I've never been to this system before.

Bounty vs fine? Did you actually check to see if you were wanted in the system? Can't pay off bounties.

First of all: Never fly without full insurance.

As to your questions:

I assume that you did not have a red "Wanted" indicator on top of your Fuel Display before you docked the last time at the station. In that case, there are two explanations that come to mind:

  1. You had a dormant bounty and were scanned on the way out of the station. That will make you "Wanted" again.
  2. One of your passengers was wanted. If you get scanned, that makes you wanted as well. "Wanted" status of your passenger should be indicated in the mission summary.

You fly a Cutter, one of the fastest beasts in the game. If you do not want not be scanned, boost in or out of the mail slot. Most everybody will make way if they see a Cutter boosting at them at 400 m/sec. :D

Even when the timer is up for a minor Bounty (when you became 'Wanted' in that system), you still have to jump out of, and then back into the system to be able to pay the resultant fine.

If that's the case, then I should have been attacked as soon as I requested to dock the FIRST time. I should have been denied or something. I wasn't attacked until after I left the station SECOND time.

And, from the wiki: "A Bounty can be incurred by shooting (either accidentally or deliberately) another player or NPC who is not wanted, or by letting a fine expire." I didn't shoot anyone, and as I said, I didn't have a fine to pay.

I'm noticing NPCs are much more fervant about scanning ships around ports now, even if you're Allied.

My advice to everyone is to use the new Contact feature and make sure all dormant fines are paid. You can now collect vouchers/bounties, and pay fines from anywhere.

Lastly... never fly without insurance, especially in an expensive ship.

Similar thing, got killed after being scanned with passengers in. They did not want to be scanned, but I did not think that should result in the whole thing opening fire on me. It just said it would decrease my payout. Lost 3 million in A rated Orca :S

Golden rule, get a wanted ticket even for 400Cr assault, leave the system. If it's a fine, you can pay it off after 8 minutes, when you get the 'On H-Jump' message in contracts. If it's a bounty wait 7 days, or buy a sidewinder, and assault a cop ship in a res site. Usually cheaper than the bounty anyway.

So, because I flew straight to a station to pay my fine instead of first jumping out of then back into the system, I got killed by NPC police (who ignored me THREE TIMES, then attacked me)?

Well that's fraking dumb.

This whole thing is stupid. I got killed by NPC police because I scanned some data tower. They killed me for completing a scan (again, after ignoring me three times and allowing me to land at their station twice). Wth is that?

And to the guy who says I should have just boosted away, I might have if I had realized that it was the fraking police that were attacking me. I started to turn around, thinking it was some new thing to do with passengers or something, as I was only half paying attention because I was NOT expecting to be attacked, because I'd passed the mouth of the station three times already without issue. But no.

As Cyrgon says, if you are wanted, you have a bounty, not a fine, and these cannot be paid off, at least, not until the timer for the bounty reaches zero.

It seems like you were lucky the first few times you went in and out of the station and you weren't scanned, but unfortunately the last time you exited you were, system authority saw you were wanted and destroyed you.

For reference, I imagine the bounty you got for trespassing was small, and it's possible that the timer had got to zero, but if you hadn't left the system, you would still be wanted. At that point, the bounty, which you can see in your transactions tab in the left HUD menu would say "On H-Jump", and you must leave the system to clear the wanted status.. Anyway, you can tell if you are wanted... It is written in big red letters in the top left of your HUD.

I have about 2 mil in vouchers and I did not see anything to collect them in contacts.

Low tech systems only.

Low Security systems... :) Find one with a station, and in contacts there will be something called Interstellar Factions (I think). The will allow you to cash bounties and pay fines from anywhere... For a 15% commission.

And unless something very fundamental has changed, you don't get destroyed for having fines, only bounties.
