Ice worlds : Is it just me? or do they look rocky

Ice worlds have been on and off for a while in elite.
During 2.0 they looked a bit like paper.
During 2.1 they looked much more like ice. and in fact had ''glacier'' looking textures and even fake reflections. it looked great (if a bit low res) (and had that low lod issue and a few lighting bugs with rocks)

However , in 2.2 (that is otherwise amazing) ice worlds look more like ''pebble'' worlds or rock worlds.

The mountains just look like a pile of rocks and the more flat surfaces look like pebbles. at least on the worlds I have landed on.

Dont get me wrong , they look frozen. but not full on ice.
(Like even the blue ice planets looked like pebbles but painted blue , so strange)

Its actualy a shock to me as every other type of planet looks amazing ! and I mean amazing (unless you go floor kissing , like I do... but I will let that slide until we get space legs)

Is it just me? or has it been the same for you?

This is not ment to be a rant or whining but more of a hybrid of feedback and wondering if its just me?
Either way , everything looks better and I am confident they will fix it in some way.

Yes, been discussed a fair bit on the beta forums a bit back. They went from 'antartica' to 'tundra', if that makes sense. I dont know enough about astronomy or chemistry to tell you which one is more realistic, if such as thing can be said. I did love the 'antartic' look, so hope we can get a mixture. :p

Haven't landed on one yet, but one thought is it seems unlikely the surface would look like snow?
You need vapour in the atmosphere to condense, and then freeze, to fall as snow.
It should probably be compacted, ice that has speckles of dust and meteorites frozen inside it?

I was a bit absent this beta. not from the game but from the forums.

You are right tundra and antartica is a better word to use.

I dont know witch one is the best in terms of realism , I hope what they could do is have it so that the colder ones use the older style but the warmer ones use this new look.

On top of that there is massive tiling.
But still , its a great update and all the other worlds look amazing. I hope this gets fixed (if it is indeed a bug)

Ice is the rock equivalent on ice worlds. It may sublimate and grow a layer of dust, and particles of ice will contribute to the dust as well. I don't recall the ice worlds looking too bad in the beta, and while I found the 2.1 textures looking more icy, I wasn't always sure about the realism. If there is melting and refreezing going on, we might see fresh layers of clean shiny ice. But old ice is pretty grubby looking, so the current textures may be pretty realistic.

Thanks for that.
I guess I just have to get used to it then.

As I do think that realism in terms of space objects is better. (as we will have earth ice when we can land on earth like worlds anyway)

Yes, I'm curious how well FD will simulate glaciers, icesheets and sea ice.
