I really start to like the idea of P2P jump gates

Personally I'm Ok with the way transfers work. They are custom and custom is expensive. But they don't really solve the problem to get from the bubble to the new frontier without grinding. And if you do that a couple of times it's summer 2017. Regular transfers are just too expensive and jumping back and forth is just not worth it.

Jump gates would solve that problem. And they would also solve some plot problems. How exactly is the new frontier supportable again? These gates should have heavy requirements. A station like Jaques would be required to build them and they should be limited to systems where energy demands can be met. I.e. neutron stars or black holes. That would limit your insta-jump capabilities to rough approximations. You have to get to a gate and you have to get from there to your destination.

If you want to use one of them it costs credits. But it's a relatively low price depending on distance and size of ship as it is not a custom transfer but a regular travel route.

The problem isn't traveling the 200 to 300Ly from Sol or Achenar to HIP 63835. If you really don't wan't to, pay the transfer bill and stop      ing about the costs. The problem is to get from Sol or Achenar to Jaques. I really don't care if I have to jump 600Ly altogether to get from where I am to where I want to be. And if I do that can be fixed by transfers. But literally spending days of uneventful jumping just to get from A to B is not exactly something a lot of players would do on a regular basis.

heheh you'd be surprised, go check out the insane journeys people have been on.

i've been a grand total of 5000ly out the bubble (which is nothing) and getting home nearly drove me insane. how people make it to jaques i don't know ;) They've just got an itch i guess. Remember the new frontier was supported by a community goal where CMDR's left the bubble and shipped goods to colonia, lots of people have done it. I reckon they're all mad now if they weren't before :D angry explorers can confirm or deny this...

Every space game ever has jump gates and tunnels whereas in Elite space actually exists and you have to travel through it. Even Supercruise seems to drive some people nuts and i get it but i think (and hope) elite will stay a game of real SCALE! In my opinion this is a big part of what is unique about ED.

so yes, i'd pay 30,000,000Cr to hop on the space bus to Colonia but i don't think its going to happen and that's probably a good thing.

If you can get to the second bubble in a few jumps, it is no longer a second bubble. It is just an extension of the first one.

You can get there without any jump if you can afford it. Jump gates simply level the playing field between beginners and multi-billionaires while actually requiring you to play the game. And if you limit it to certain types of systems (and if there's a gate) it can still mean you have to jump and jump and jump for little more than a transfer. The way it is now just means that beginners are mostly stuck in one while those of us with enough credits to waste are not. IMO It's splitting the player base on a very wrong line.

Yeah until there becomes a faster way to get to one Bubble to the next I'm not going over there. I refuse to spend weeks month etc jumping. That is insanity.

You seem to be missing the point OP. It's not SUPPOSED to be easy to get to the "new frontier". It's SUPPOSED to be difficult and challenging, or as you put it "grinding". Too many games serve everything up on a platter these days. "Oh you've been playing for ten minutes? We'll make you a general, an admiral, AND the dragonborn."

You can get there in less time than it takes to fly to many places on this planet. If I could play ED on a flight to Australia I could get from Sol to Jaques and back again before we landed! You may not WANT to do it in the context of a video game, but plot wise if you were actually living in this universe the prospect of travelling for 12 hours or so would not be particularly daunting. I wouldn't personally be opposed to jump gates but lets not pretend they would be anything other than a convenience.

I don't know..... I kinda like having Jaques far away and hard to reach.

For example I really wanted to take part in the mining CG. But I missed the start because of the 2.2 launch and other stuff, and I know that trying to get there now may result in not taking part at all. I could still probably make it, but then again I might have problems on the way and arrive to late. I like the fact that I have to make that decision.

Besides, it's not like the entire civilized world is scattered all over the galaxy. If you would have major hubs which you need to visit regularly then yeah, but Jaques was moved to that part of the galaxy with the sole intent of making it hard for people to get there. There's no hidden economic reason, or any other gameplay reason besides the journey itself.

Frankly, by the min-maxing standards of the first bubble, Colonia is a terrible place to go anyway.
- only two stations do outfitting: one sells E-grade only, the other E or D-grade plus a full miners shop
- only one shipyard: sells 5 ships, the biggest is a T-6 (and no Cobra III)
- no engineers
- no ship-launched fighters (you can probably resupply existing bays, but no-one's been able to test that yet)
- has only just got enough planets for a trade route this week: no useful rare trading, several entire classes of trade good unavailable, only three stations have large pads and one of them doesn't sell anything useful.
- limited mission choice
- one passenger destination, but nowhere that sells cabins
- no Fed/Imp/Alliance factions for ranking up with or selling bounties/scans to
- no Powerplay spheres for bonus bounty payouts or trade prices
- has one Haz RES (as of this week), no CZs, and a very limited selection of BGS states
- CGs are relatively rare and do not generally have high payouts
(It's great - I'm really enjoying being out here!)

If it was easy to reach it would just be a set of not very good stations (which you can get all over the bubble) with a nebula backdrop (which you can get a few hundred LY from the bubble). There's nothing in terms of game mechanics you can do out in Colonia which you can't do in the bubble - and a lot you can do in the bubble you can't do in Colonia - so if you're not wanting to go there specifically for the distance and the things that makes possible, why do you want to go?

I believe it has been clearly stated by the Developers that jump gates will never exist ED. Now that's not to say they may not change their minds.

Please do correct me if I'm wrong.

My question is, when multicrew is implemented, could one potentially "tag along" with someone on their trip to Colonia, get dropped off at Jaques, and then buy a new ship there?

Could open up some actual multiplayer passenger gameplay. But it all depends on the logistics of multicrew and how it's implemented.

Wait... you can?? What?

The gameplay:
1.)Sign up to be a passenger.
2.)Log out of Elite: Dangerous
3.)Log in each hour and ask, "Are we there yet?"
4.)Wonder why the owner self destructed the ship and told you to fly yourself.

Same here. I did 5000ly out (in preparation for Prof. Palin) and I nearly went mad.

No jump gates.
Space is big.
I like it big.
I have space madness from my trip to Jaques.
Can you tell?
