So far, each beacon at the site gives a different data package. Besides being data storage, I'm not sure if they serve any other purpose. The first time one popped up out of the ground..... nearly gave me a heart attack. Was *not* expecting that.

Alot of poking and testing to do.

My guess is that the beacons will signal to their makers that there is a new sentient race in sufficient numbers to conquer once a set number of them have been triggered by us inquisitive monkeys poking them.
