White Dwarfs Need Nerfing *ducks*

I know what you meant to type. What you ACTUALLY typed has me picturing stars orbiting a big bloke called Barry. He's drinking a pint of cheap lager and is about to say something that he feels the need to preface with "Now I'm not being racist, but...."

So you've met my uncle then? [big grin]

a quick question to those that came out of hyperspace in one of these 'Streams' had you throttled down to zero before the hyperspace exit ?

Dude. Landed right in middle of the beams. Cannot stress that enough.

You can't avoid something you've already instantly hit.
You need to set speed to 0% during a jump. thats a safty rule

I have been playing every day (nearly) from the first beta all the way to today.
But never once did I get killed due to a star, black hole or any other tellar body for that matter.

This, IMHO, is a problem (though admittedly a very very minor one). Some of these steller phenomenon bend reality as we perceive it, they should not be risk free when approaching.

Realy?
I think of it as a gameplay feature.

It makes it feel more alive and ''real''

In movies and games you hear talk of all the special maneuvers and things pilots do. but in most games it skips that bit.
Elite even if the flight is basic has a lot of small features than ground it in reality.

For example I had this very han solo moment.
There was 4 anaconda attacking me , so I started my FSD. but it had taken 70% of damage.
That let to me trying to charge my FSD but it kept failing. after trying about 12 times it worked and I made it out alive.

Most games would skip that in fear of not making kids feel like an ace or just have it be scripted and be a QTE. just a small thing , but it makes a big difference to me

I lost 36 million credits on my first jump into a white dwarf system. Got caught in the jet and somehow pulled toward the star (these should be pushing me away i assume?) . I ended up dropping out of SC with the star close enough to be fairly big in my screen. Needless to say I was still in the jet. So i spent the next 20 minutes just twirling around with all my modules malfunctioning randomly and constantly while I was unable to do anything. Heat apparently wasn't much of an issue as it took over 20 minutes for my ship to be so damaged i just self destructed to get it over with.

Needless to say, the 1 time jump boost you get from getting near them isn't worth the risk. Meh. Lesson learned.

I have also jumped directly into the NS jet in super cruise. Has anyone mentioned that the NS's exclusion zone is absolutely massive? I did not drop from supercruise because I had killed my throttle in hyperspace knowing my next jump was a NS. I can see how coming out of hyperspace into a jet could cause one to panic. It's important to remain calm.

Rofl.

All the peasants are now complaining about one of the coolest and best new features in the game.

Come on, guys. Focus up.

That's why I'm so upset... I DECIDED on my own to go check it out, knowing the risks, but I was being CAUTIOUS (maybe too cautious????:S); now my 'conda and crew is ... I don't understand where I went wrong, though. I emergency dropped outside of cones, thought that it'd be best to back off a bit and then head in. So I did that, but I kept getting the IMPACT warning, and so I kept peeling away thinking I'd eventually be turned away enough that I wouldn't emergency drop... so why did I emergency stop if there was no impact warning?

was I just going too slow?

and again... I felt waaay more safe whilst scooping from neutron stars than I did with this white dwarf.

Don't get me wrong. I agree that this is one of the coolest new features... it's awesome! I just don't see the point of being CAUTIOUS around these things if you're gonna get PUNISHED for it. :\

That's the other thing...

I do believe there should be a risk.. OBVIOUSLY.

but I don't want to just avoid these things and never use them ever again because I'm bitter and scared of having this happen again... what's the point of having them if they're gonna cause MORE problems than they solve?

I was worried about this when they were first introduced. I kept saying that I hoped there'd be a learning curve, (and there might be one), but from what I've seen it all looks random... I've seen people scooping fairly close to the star.. and I've seen people scooping far from the star, near the end of the cones... I thought there'd be a sweet spot, but there isn't. Idk.. maybe I just have to watch a dozen or so tutorial vids on youtube..

Hah!

isn't it fantastic though, that such threats exist within the galaxy?

Wait till they add magnetars.

Update on my situation:
managed to set course for nearby system.

It seems like it's easiest to try and find a system you happen to be facing and boost/jump once fsd is charged, before the oscillations turn you away... I kept trying to low wake out by facing away... but that's nearly impossible.. idk if bigger ships have more trouble or what, but thank the universe for Alioth's friendly neighbour, 78 Ursae Majoris... otherwise, I'd be space dust right now.

I think it's best that everyone takes a crappy vessel to run tests and practice with this.... cause escape is possible.... it's just getting to a point where you don't panic upon having an accident and dropping into one.. I do not want to just avoid these things.... I saw in one of the forums someone said something to the effect of, "here's this dangerous thing; tame it."

but again.... I tried low waking numerous times.. super frustrating.

it took 2-3 tries to successfully engage my fsd for a high wake to a system I was facing..

but this still requires the game to be shut off for a appropriate planning (finding right system/retrying cause oscillations turned you away)... which sucks :( but my vessel's up n running again.

lol no I hear you. I don't want to whine and make Frontier change their minds about all this... I've kinda been wanting things (black holes) to have a higher element of danger for a while now.. like most of us. Though I AM going to miss being able to nonchalantly fly round and round a black hole, just enjoying the semi-legit lensing effects... that will be GREATLY missed... I just fear that the risk involved with getting good at not dying will be not worth the time... not to mention the fact that the jump boost is pretty much pointless in terms of risk/reward.... it's laughable, no? at least for the small increase given from white dwarfs... neutrons are cool. from MY limited experience, mind you.

from now on... I'm scooping from the VERY END of those damned cones, danget.

Emergency stop. Trapped in beams I arrived directly in. Boom. Not working as intended, unless you want a certain percent chance of certain death if you ever visit a WD?

Is escape possible, other than by engaging my freshly-installed Rebuy Drive?

One NPC crew, dead on maiden voyage...

*Rebuy Drive Charging...*

You always set your throttle to 0 (STOP) after you jump...

Clearly, you need to re-take your pilots test - and your theory :p.

Is this happening with neutron stars as well? If so, the Core just got a hell of a lot more dangerous. :/

Hehe, thought the same...
In Frontier ELITE, you don't farm Neutron Stars. Neutron Stars farm you.
:D

I wonder what's the correct technique to try to get the ship turned those 180deg to have a chance at escaping?
I've read that working to oscillate the up Ship FA Off to break that 90deg barrier supposedly works, but never had a chance to test it.

Workaround: Use route selection and exclude neutron star/white dwarf stars from the stars included in the route until the problem has been fixed by FDev.
