The Ancient Artifacts: Expiration Date

Ancient Casket
Ancient Tablet
Ancient Orb
Ancient Urn
Ancient Relic
Ancient Totem

I just landed back at Founders with nearly 30T of these interesting commodities in my hold. Checking out the alien ruins was, dare I say, fun. Driving around an environment that actually reacted to your presence was a nice change of pace. But I digress.

I think we all know that these items will be of significance at some point in the future. The question, in my mind, is this: how long will FD make us wait before revealing what that purpose is? Right now you have players holding onto these commodities waiting for whatever comes next, which in a way artificially restricts their game play. You cannot switch into a dedicated combat ship because it likely doesn't have the cargo space to hold all the artifacts; explorers risk lower jump ranges and the universally loved "I somehow know that you just went to a planet and picked up stuff" pirates; traders and miners lose cargo space plus psychic space pirates; pirates lose a significant chunk of their limited cargo space along with everything else FD has done to kill that profession; bounty hunters risk being dog piled in RES sites; passenger liners lose cabin space and risk their passengers being fried by magic psychic radioactive space wizard pirates who know all.

So, my question to the community is this: how long do you plan to hold on to these commodities before saying "screw it" and selling them off? Luckily for me the DS3 DLC released around the same time as 2.2, so I don't mind letting my Conda sit at Founders for a bit while we wait to see what FD has in store for us. However, I'm thinking that if no use for these things turns up within two weeks, I'm just going to sell them off. It is my firm belief that if something new is introduced to any game it should have a purpose straight off the bat, especially when acquiring or interacting with that new content requires the player to make the intentional effort to travel to travel out of their way. Releasing content and then having your player based wait to see what its for, in my opinion, is bad form.

So, what say you? When will you make the decision to dump these artifacts onto the market?

I have an alternative question.

How long are we going to put up with this "no storage".

Elite Dangerous. The only game in history with looting and crafting but no storage.

They'll probably only bring you unwanted attention.
I would ditch them now, just to be safe.

Do not mess with things you do not understand, human.

Like the Lizard says above^
He prolly knows too.

I share your sentiment, but that topic has been done to death. I decided to take this thread in a slightly different direction :p

Don't you think it's possible that there, um, is no actual "purpose" behind any of these artifacts, and that their sole purpose is to make a little bit of money selling them?

Just because the "Unknown" relics had some kind of deep hidden purpose, does not mean the "Ancient" relics likewise will.

Like you, I'm biding my time. I don't have a lot of these items (4 items). Was actually holding on to them to see if they damaged the ship like the UA's did. I know someone in the Maia system MIGHT put out a request for them, but I'm not going to hold on to these things for more than a week.

BTW, if FD followed one of my suggestions in the forums, the "owners" of these items should show up on Oct 31, because what better way to say "BOO!"?

How do we know they are ancient? That base could have been built 20 years ago for all we know.

Well, it kind of says that in the description of what you're looking at if you're targeting the item.

Than again, I remember when Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings, so I guess that makes me ancient, right?

And right now they're doing bucky ball tournaments with an ancient orb. You KNOW that someone's going to land there in a huge ship bristling with weapons, look at what we're doing with that orb, scream "Bob, they're toying with your mom's ashes, treating her urn in a most disgusting and disrespectful manner".

And then all hell breaks loose.

Yet another reason why we need commodity storage. Even if I wanted to hold on to them as souveniers its just not feasible. [down]

After visiting the Site, I intentionally left it with an empty Cargo hold.

Anyway, it's clear that this discovery was planned to be a typical "managed" one. Players aren't supposed to find anything until Frontier wants them to by giving external hints outside the game, that's how it usually goes.
Judging the Data Scans, I'd guess V2.3 was supposed to see some new Engineers requiring these items.

But since the site won't go anywhere and there's no discernable use for any of these items right now (unless "Totem-Bombing" or "Orb-Bombing" is a thing), there's absolutely no need to carry these items around other than to look at them.

Man, why do people feel the need to hoard stuff??

It's not like these things are hard to obtain, if you need them go collect some.

I would also say because they are in the game, it does not mean something will happen with them. There are already a decent number of "mysterious" items in the game that do nothing specific beyond just storytelling, soontill relics, trinkets of hidden fortune, sap 8 core container.

It could be a very long time till they have a "purpose" and in fact it's very possible they will never have a specific purpose. It's also likely that if they are given a purpose then it will be something minor and you will then just complain you were forced to hold on to them for months, because that's how you roll.

Just play the game man, stop hoarding and limiting yourself "just in case".

I will be selling them as soon as I get back to the bubble - why would I horde cargo? Cargo is for profit not to put in some box never to be seen again until some months later you realise you have no storage left for the latest thing you want to horde and end up throwing away the original items you put in there.

I sold about 20 to a Scientific Outpost.
My Explorer rank (in Ranger) was at 36% before selling them.

Guess what it was after?

42%

You do know mysteries do not work like this, right? FDev implements something mysterious, you can solve it right immediately (but unlikely due to complexity of puzzle) afterwards. The "ancient city" proved this, it was found literally day after release of 2.2. I'm pretty certain FD would never give us a door without a key, which is somewhere nearby.

Well, that's a massive assumption, which isn't backed up by the process so far.
