I have foolishly been reading these forums for some time, watching development of ED.

Up until recently I've had a firm resolve to wait until the game is done and gone live and THEN buy it.

However the more I read about it, the weaker my resolve.

What makes it more difficult if I have some extra cash to spend, which I WAS going to use to get a new musical instrument which I was planning to use to do some busking to earn some extra cash to get more luxuries, which I could in turn over time use to get ED at a later date.

However I want ED now and don't really want to wait, but then the sensible answer is to wait until I earn some extra cash with busking and buy it later.

So, I have decided to leave it up to the community here to decide for me.
I have created a poll.

Please vote as above as I am too indecisive

Never prioritize fantasy over reality. ;)

Time spent grinding away in a video game, let alone an incomplete one, is time utterly squandered. Time spent playing an instrument and earning money isn't.

I'd get yourself the standard beta/gamma + expansion pass as a reward for busking off the instrument.

Can't argue there.

When you think about it, it's a video game. And video games are by their very nature a waste of time.

Personally, I upped my pledge to Alpha level once I realized the full potential of the project and wanted to be a part of it's development. I also wanted earlier access and all the expansions, so I was greedy.

Instrument first, every time!

At least you'll get a fully finished, perfectly working, dependable, reliable item that you can use to the best of your abilities, and not have to beta test it :)

Plus everything you learn won't be wiped at random :D

of course, after a couple of gigs and some cash - plop down for beta as soon as you can!

Playing games won't feed you.

Real life priority first, fantasy second.

Keep those perspectives, and you'll have an happy life! ;)

Get Elite when it goes into second-stage Beta. It will have a lot more to do by then, and it'll be a better *play* experience. Right now, it's still somewhat buggy and limited in what you can actually do. Fun as chips, though.

But, yeah, wait for a while ;)

Wow some very sensible, responsible answers. Thankyou. :)

Yes it does make sense to buy the instrument first.
I'd be busking in my spare time as I have a full time job, so it'd take a while to build up the cash, probably a few weeks, but that's not so long.

I also want to do the busking to build up my confidence playing an instrument in front of other people, so there's lots of good reasons to get the instrument first.

ED can come later, it's gonna be awesome and the longer I wait, the more awesome that first time experience with ED will be.

Thanks again for the answers.

I'm not really going to do busking to get essentials as I have a full time job that pays the bills, busking is just for luxuries and for the experience itself.
But yes, point taken.

this +1

Elite is very fun

but wait until they resolve some networking issues and crashes.

Right now PVP is almost pointless because people cant die.

Right now the game is too limited to keep you occupied for a longer period, I think it's just for Elite fanatics at this stage, who are blinded by enthusiasm! (That includes myself).

However, if you do not have that extra cash to spend: for a deep and profound Elite experience, you may as well hold off until the game starts to resemble the release product, that would be my advise.

Well many years ago Elite (and the Ultima games) were the reason I bought my Commodore 64 .

I put a LOT of time into elite wayback then and have been waiting for elite to come out in this form since then.
I DO love space sims (among other genres), but TBH what with being married with kids, responsibilities etc I don't have huge amounts of time to throw at computer games atm.

It's just all the chatter here about the progress of the game tempts me to splash out and get it anyway.
But yeah, I think I'll wait until I save up enough dosh via busking and as suggested, reward myself with one of the betas a bit later.

If you are more of a trader than combateer I think you'll be disappointed in the current state of the game. But get the game anyway, as they release more builds things will improve, and at any rate you'll be here to see the game evolve :)

I'm following the development of E: D closely, but I won't buy it until it's released due to the way I play games - I rarely get the time anymore, so I'd rather wait and play the finished product (or, at least, the released product). A beta is intended for bug fixing, balancing, etc... and I just don't have the time to help with that!

Buy the instrument, busk for a few days and then you can have both! ;-)

Seriously though, the "game" is still in its early stages so although it's fun it can also be frustrating at times. Allowing time for it to develop while you get your instrument and raise funds is probably the best call and you can then have the best of both worlds.

Even if you miss "Premium Beta" you can still buy the higher "all updates" package when you buy into the standard beta.

I don't think I can offer any other advice thats been offered already in this thread.

I don't have huge amounts of time to throw at computer games atm.
In that case I wouldn't recommend the Beta at the moment.

Good luck with the busking!!!!

Heh good point about the time commitment thing.

And thanks for the good luck wishes. It'll be quite challenging for me to do busking, but I think good to try out as a it shouldn't be such a big deal to busk.
