There's no going back, is there?

I'll do combat in VR, but trading with a monitor.

The situational awareness from the depth perception and headtracking I get from VR is great for fighting.

But the galaxy map is easier for me to use on a 2d monitor, even when I map the galaxy map controls to the hotas. Getting to 3rd party websites, and using a keyboard is much easier when I'm not using a HMD. So when I do trading or courier missions, I'm using my 4k monitor.

Got my Oculus a couple of days ago and realise that I've been playing flight/driving/space sims wrong for the last 30 odd years.

I'm never going back to flat screens...

It really does feel wrong on a screen. The thing that makes playing sim on a screen wrong is your perspective. It is not correct and you have to adjust and or compensate for it. But not in VR, in VR your perspective is perfect as it would be in real life.

I used to play ed using 50" screen until I got my dk2 last year. Never looked back. However when CV1 was released I was ready to buy one but found an opportunity to burrow one from someone locally and played ED with it. The color banding and smearing was so awful compared to my dk2 on pre-release extended type driver, that I decided to wait for the CV2(or a fix to that issue). So the problem now I find myself just waiting as I don't have any desire whatsoever to play ED back on my 2D 50" screen anymore. In other words for me it is VR, or nothing(which is the case for me right now) : (

Yeah that's tough but you probably made the right decision as it does not appear that they plan to do anything about it. I know that will be probably the biggest driver for me ever buying a future iteration is that this crap gets resolved otherwise I will not be participating. Oculus support stinks they just stay quiet and give no information about anything.

VR has permanently changed the way I compute. ED is definitely one of the things I wouldn't play on screen again, it almost seem contrary to part of the reason I'm playing it in the first place. The same goes with gaming in general, I'm always looking to do something in VR before hitting up a 2d game.

I've noticed that screen shots in the game don't look as good as they should when I'm in the Vive, so I retook them while running the game on the monitor. After I'd done so, I decided to just keep playing.

I lasted about 10 minutes before thinking, "How on Earth did I ever play like this?"

The tiny little window into the world of Elite. The inability to look out the windows easily. The sheer lack of being present in my Cobra's cockpit. :O The simple fact that I turned my head to look at one of the side panels. [woah]

Has anyone else gone back to 2D and found themselves eager to return to the world of three dimensions?

I still play on my monitor when I have to micro-manage a lot of Engineers stuff, and/or I am needed around the house.

Love it in my Vive (especially so recently with the latest SteamVR and ED updates) but still play on the monitors some times when doing trading runs - I play on a 40" 4k with a 24" above me to keep track of trade runs etc.

I haven't bought a VR setup yet but 3x27"-1080P monitors with TrackIr is the next best thing for me. I will eventually get some VR kit but until then...Fly Safe CMDRs o7 and thanks for the reminder I might need to update my Xmas wishlist for Santa...I have been REAL GOOD this year! I promise...

For the sake of being able to use my phone easily and do other crap, I'll pop back to monitor if I am docked for extended periods - long sessions with an RNGineer for instance - but as a general rule, VR is just too damn awesome.

Back some time ago when I was still on the DK2, I did use EDSwitcher to go flat when getting trade data (I do it the old fashion way, onto an spreadsheet). Haven't done much of that since getting the CV1. At this point, I peak through the nose gap to look at the spreadsheet on my phone. I'm hoping to get V Desktop working so I can look at it from within the cockpit.

That was the last step before I got a Vive - see you soon :)

I play my exploration account on monitor because the galaxy map is too hard to use on VR. The others I play in VR. Love the SRV on a planet surface.

There are loads of well explained methods for getting the very best out of the galaxy map in VR. Voice control with VoiceAttack is an ideal solution.

If you have a hotas, take the time to map it to the controls on the map.

I use my stick and 2 hats to move up/down/rotate/pan in all directions and another button to select. Makes it really easy in VR. Its really cool actually.

I sold my rift DK2 and was vrless for 4 months. Elite, assetto corsa and ets2 were just....... flat without them.

No going back once you go down the rabbit hole

The galaxy map has been driving me insane, I'm just in the middle of mapping it to the xbox controller, see how that works out, only downside is, an extra controller to pick up when you want to go into it

I'm still undecided... If it wasn't for ED and Dirt Rally, I'd have very little interest in VR at this point. I'm not sure the gain in depth perception makes up for the serious drop in visual fidelity, combined with the physical inconvenience of wearing a headset.

Edit: I take it back. The new VR Ultra setting is incredible. :p

That is the main reason I am very hesitant to go the VR route.

I am also wondering what will happen when walking around is implemented. I don't want to get sick. And I don't want to have to switch back to monitor for walking around all the time.

So it is better for me not to get used to VR.

Hopefully they handle it similar to the VR game "Adrift" where "headlooking" with the VR is essential restricted to visor of the space helmet the character is wearing. It essentially turns into any FPS control system at that point but with the addition that you can turn/move your physical head left and/or right a bit to look out the corner of the visor.

I am doing a terrible job explaining how it works in that game. :/

Bought Elite when I got a DK2 mid 2015, have played Elite in VR (and pretty much no other games) ever since. Tried to play in 2D 4K to see what like, but lasted about a minute before firing back into VR.

Had my Vive a few days now, friend picked up a Rift.
We can't get over it.

It's like being in a planetarium as a kid only 1000x better, even with some of the text issues on the Vive it's STILL amazing. Single greatest gaming moment of my life.

It's the scale that really hits you, and the 3D effect with it of course. You literally are in the cockpit, watching VR footage just does not get across how amazing it is.
