[Performance. Need help testing] I changed my Xbox DNS to free google DNS.

This need lots more testing. But after 3 hours gameplay yesterday, i noticed the station services didn't lagged, not even a bit.

Loading Galaxy map looks faster, and system map WAS faster. Outfitting was lag free, and mission boards was really fast, even the pictures loaded fast. Also my system panel, and Navigation panel didn't lagged.

There are a million possible reasons of course. But this is surely interesting.

So if you guys are interested. Change your XboxOne DNS to Primary 8.8.8.8 and Secondary to 8.8.4.4, and test it your self. (dont forget to hard reset your XboxOne after changing your DNS)

Most likely this get debunked really quick, but better save then sorry.

Cheers.

Hey Dusty

Actually I've noticed an improvement in the game performance. Menus and galaxy map loading faster. They can still lag from time to time but much improved from right after 2.2 dropped.

I'm a little wary of messing with my console or I would also test this lol.

You are not really messing with the console. Just changing the DNS in the advanced network settings. If you dont trust it, you can set it back to "automatic" right away. No harm done.

Though i understand where you are coming from though.. i hate messing around with default settings as well.

I most definitely need this, sick of waiting like 20 seconds for the pause menu to arrive!! I'll give this a stab when I get home, which ISP are you on? I use Sky so could just as easily change the router to use 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 instead of Sky's own.

"Automatic" should pick up DNS from your router, which is most likely set to your internet provider's DNS servers. You can normally change DNS on your router to benefit all your internet use not just your xbox. OpenDNS also works really well too https://use.opendns.com/

DNS settings are only network settings which are normally retrieved automatically from your router.

These typical are your isp suppliers servers for example BT, Virgin Media, Talk Talk etc.

I mentioned Talk Talk on purpose because i doubt with the bigger players you will have many issues but the smaller companies like Talk Talk their DNS servers will probably grind.... and be slow...

Switching to the settings above only affects the servers the xbox is looking for when going out on the web.

It will not affect any other settings on the system, they are pretty safe to play with. if in doubt just switch back to automatic.

Hi Dusty

I have been using the Google DNS for 18 months, when I noticed game updates were taking far too long on fast fibre.... I have not been having the performance issues with 2.2 others have been. Gal map can take a few seconds to load first time of running the game and then is fine. Boards load straight away, the pictures can take a few seconds to catch up. Multi GB game updates pull on minutes rather than hours!

Hi Dusty

Thanks for the information - I'm interested to learn about your sources for why you thought changing the DNS settings would help and why

Only a few seconds for the pictures to load, only that is a huge improvement already. lol.

Thank you for the info Grfee.

No sources, just a wild guess.

In the past i used this to speed up downloading DLC, and games on the XboxOne because i know the standard settings are not always the best. Always changed it back to standard after downloading because play wise it wasn't noticeable.

So i figured to try it again to see what happens last friday.

I noticed some improvements like i said in my OP. But this could also be a result of maintenance server side, or an update server side, low data traffic in the system im in, and a million more reasons.

Only me testing would be unrealistic, so i figured to share this with you all, and see what happens.

I'm glad it works better for you however I've been using those as my DNS settings since 2013 and ED menus etc still have some very noticeable and/or annoying delays. Some delays are so long to make you think that there is a problem as there is usually no positive indication that acknowledges that you selected whichever option while you wait for the screen to change.

There are cases that will make your connection worse with changing DNS.

I did some tests, and for me the free Google DNS came out best. But, in your case it might makes it worse.

I used this figure out what DNS settings would be best for my region.

Mine uses the default automatic setting which i imagine uses the default Virgin media dns my router is set to use. Never had any issues with it. I haven't been experiencing the gal map delays others have since 2.2 and the last time I downloaded an update for a game on my Xbox the download rate peaked at 120mb/S according to the readout in my games app.

UK, Vodafone Broadband (open reach) 80up/20down here (xbox)
Since 2.2, I did experience big delays using the station services and galaxy map. For example, it could take 20 seconds to load the market.
The pause function would take a long time to show the menu, sometimes north of 30 seconds.

However, using the google DNS has made a huge improvement. It's like night and day. Back to pre 2.1 load times (which were good!). Thanks for the tip!

Nice, lets hope it stays this way, also after several hours game time.

I have set the DNS like you suggested Dusty, I'll give you feedback later, I'm off to work.
I'm out in the black so I can only check GalMap loadtimes and Sc/Hyperspace improvements ATM but I'll let you know.

I hadn't really thought about this as I use a different dns setting at home for accessing geo locked services. Maybe this is one of the reasons that I havent had much of a slow down.

Good tip anyway Dusty, hope it helps a number of people.

Can't comment on any changes to elite performance specifically, but I had pretty severe download speed issues on the bone using automatic dns (have a fibre connection but I was often getting less than half a mbps, fine on ps4 & other devices), changing to google's dns improved it a lot,it still dips badly but a reset usually fixes it now (didn't before).

Just tried this over lunch, and it may be my imagination, but Elite seemed to run/load much faster.
Key thing for me was i wasn't tutting at the XBox every few minutes screaming "LOAD FOR **** SAKE!".

Will keep an eye on it, but thanks Dusty.
