To watch a movie inside your cabin? Yes, you can!

So, my dear commanders: Have you ever taken a long, long journey into the void? Have you ever removed your VR sets to be able to watch a movie during the countless jumps heading towards your final destination? Have you ever wished you could do that... from your ship?

Dream no more! Your answer is "Open Vr Desktop Display Portal"!

https://github.com/Hotrian/OpenVRDesktopDisplayPortal

This simple open source app will pop an screen inside your virtual world! You can either make it fixed to your headset (so it will always be in the same position in front of you) or fix it to the VR world... And Boy! Oh boy that is a joy!

I can't post an image at present (have to figure out how to do an screen cap that shows also the added screen) but I have it fixed on the top left of my cabin. Changing some config settings, it is 80% transparent when I am not staring at it, and becomes fully opaque when I stare at it.

It has made my travel to Colonia a lot more amusing!

Hope you enjoy :)

Oh boy I can now watch music vids whilst trading ;)

I've been using this for about a month and LOVE it. Makes long trips so much better. Nothing like watching football in my ASP on sundays.

Aside from seeing Gwen Stefani 6 feet away from me on stage at Brixton Academy with No Doubt back in 2002, this is single handedly the 2nd greatest thing I've ever seen!

Does this work on the Rift? Or is it the app that requires Rift users to use SteamVR? If its the later then that ain't gonna happen! I'd continue to use the V Beta.

EDIT: Yeah it is the app that requires Rift users to launch via SteamVR. I'll give it a miss but thanks OP.

For anyone interested V is now in open Beta: http://www.hellov.io/

This is probably a dumb question... but anyway...

what exactly is SteamVR? Haven't been in the PC gaming business for 15 years and just came back because of ED :)
I bought ED on the frontier shop, play it via the ED Launcher, found out after getting a Rift that i could get a key to open ED via Oculus home (but i don't).

SteamVR is the runtime the Vive uses. Rift users can also run Elite from Steam, which gives them the option to run via the Oculus runtime or SteamVR runtime. If you use a Rift you would not want to use SteamVR as it is inferior in its current state.

You don't need an oculus key to run ED with the Rift. Look up the many posts here to see how.

I am using a Rift. Thanks for for explaining!

I did get a "free" key form frontier to be able to play ED via Oculus Home, but when it started downloading the complete 8G again I just quit the process.
Works just fine using the standard Frontier ED Launcher.

Any frame hit or restrictions like Win10 only?

It is still in beta and the video capture has FPS problems. In my case I fix it by reducing the screen size via the app menu to 1000 width and maintaining the relation to the height. With that I have a reasonable sized screen inside my cabin and FPS are about 20 to 25; slightly sluggish at times, but not a big deal.

Just enable the display mirror in steamVR and capture from there using OBS - no frame hit for me. I've been using it for about six weeks and finally get to do all the stuff I mostly considered too boring as a sole activity - really learnt to appreciate mining and easily watched >100 hours of video using it. From within the Vive, the screen easily appears bigger than the 55" TV roughly in the same positon in RL:
