From the point of view of financial gain and rank progression (towards Elite Explorer) is there any more to exploration other than discovery scanning and detailed surface scanning of stars and planets. For instance, scanning planet surfaces using SRV, is there anything there that would be of value?

There's the issue of making it back in one piece and selling the data.

Traveling distances in an SRV on planets far from civilization has been reported to increase rank as well.

Srv driving does increase rank but not by much higher up- I only got 1% ranger from driving 1000km on beagle point

Certain types of astronomical objects pay more than others. I am currently on the return side of a trip to Sag A* and I am keeping an eye for earth-like worlds. I have found more than I thought would be found.

It is not easy to endure the number of jumps required, 1k+/- to Sag A* and back. It would be best to to go Colonia and spend time there playing as you would in the bubble.
