An Idea for Educating Ed, need your input

A list of of noteworthy explorers!

This started out as an idea for Educating Ed, but it quickly became apparent that maybe that wasn't the best vehicle for explorers. Now it's just a list for fellow explorers to get to know a bit about what other commanders have been up to. It's not exhaustive, and there is a risk of leaving important people out, but I for one would love to know more and it's good to give commanders a bit of recognition.

1. Chiggy Vonrictofen and Felix Macedonia for obvious reasons.

2. Nutter for his great guide to exploration.

3. Disorganise for his epic SRV planet circumnavigation at Beagle point.

4. Frawd for his Sidewinder exploits ( and Cmdr Jermus).

5. Jackie Silver for too many things to mention.

6. Allitinil for his exploration exploits.

7. Zulu Romeo for discovering Sag A.

8. Erimus for discovering Beagle point.

9. Katejina for her galactic string expedition

10. Stupid hippy for being "far out", literally :)

11. Anuranium for taking out the Sag A sniper.

12. Marx for maintaining the Earth Like worlds list.

13. Ziggy Stardust (aladinsane) for being the first talented Explorer/ Bard in the galaxy.

14. Mengy for his research

15. Mad Moran and the flying circus (they've already been on the livestream I know, I was there!)

16. Dognosh.

17. Dr Kaii for his brilliant guides.

18. Turjan Starstone

19. Titus Balls

20. Qohen Leth

21. Guywano for his ground breaking ideas on searching for Earth Like Worlds

22. R4nger0: : A hilarious CMDR who at the same time Erimus got to Beagle Point and Zulu Romeo reached Sag A*, tried to cross the galaxy in his trusted sidewinder called "Sneaky Pete" (Mind you, this was a daunting task - no jumponium, no engineering and very frequent server disconnects). I can vividly remember watching the stream of the rendevouz with Erimus on the far side of the galaxy, a truly humbling experience.
I wonder how he managed to store all that Brandy inside that sidewinder though.

23. ElectricZ: Although not technically known for exploration, his Buckeyball events such as the race to Sagittarius A* did push a great deal of CMDR's out of the bubble and into deep space. It is my opinion that this has helped triggered some curiosity and interest in deep space exploration due to these events.

24. Surly_Badger (Founder of the fuel rats).

25. Matt Graham.

26. Esvandiary. Aside from all his work alongside Jackie on decoding UC surely anyone who's ever travelled near the core owes him a massive debt for his work on route plotting near the core.

27. Zenith/Akira Masakari For the combined efforts on decoding the planetary sounds in the System Map.

28. Genar-Hofoen author of Captain's Log

29. EDDiscovery - Finwen, ian666 and robbyp - and everyone of the EDDiscovery team

30. BongoBaggins for his childish and stupid video :)

31. Eisen: he put a lot of efforts in the Formidine Rift exploration, is a key figure with the increasing popular Children of Raxxla and coordinator of the expeditions there. Actually he made a great deal (alongside many others like Erimus) in dragging me and I guess others back to the game with this "new" content.

32. Andrew Gaspurr: one of the curators of Gal Map Thread, he is making a great deal in keeping the project updated and welcoming new POI submitters. Not turning down a new explorer that submits maybe a not so unique POI, is very important to make new players feel they can do something important, and creates passion in the community. Also his personal submissions are quite impressive, I've lost count on how many planetary nebulae he found, and all the very good looking screenshots and presentation he makes. OFC Erimus is the one that started and is yet curing this project, I'm endorsing him 100%, but it seems he doesn't really need my endorsement

33. Wishblend for setting up the Deep Space Comms Array and many other behind the scenes activities.

My memory is not so good as I'm getting old, so please point out the many I've missed :)

I've had an idea formulating in my head for sometime, and recent events have reinforced it.

I'd like to see the "Educating Ed" livestream focusing on groups of noteworthy explorers.

Here are some of my suggestions, please feel free to suggest additional ones:

1. Chiggy Vonrictofen and Felix Macedonia for obvious reasons.

2. Nutter for his great guide to exploration.

3. Disorganise for his epic SRV planet circumnavigation at Beagle point.

4. Frawd for his Sidewinder exploits.

5. Jackie Silver for too many things to mention.

6. Allitinil for his exploration exploits.

7. Zulu Romeo for discovering Sag A.

8. Erimus for discovering Beagle point.

9. Whoever did that galactic string thread (Victoria Greenwood?)

10. Stupid hippy.

11. Anuranium for taking out the Sag A sniper.

12. Marx for maintaining the Earth Like worlds list.

13. Ziggy Stardust (aladinsane) for being so funny.

14. Mengy for his research

15. Mad Moran and the flying circus (they've already been on the livestream I know, I was there!)

If you're going to include me, you have to include the late great Cmdr Jermus, who has done what I did and more...

Oh, and he's not dead, just late back from his holidays ;)

Nice idea, I like the idea for a run down of credits to people for various good reasons. For Educating Ed I think he wants to be doing something new, at least not yet seen on the stream.

So, what about the neutron super highway? And white dwarfs too, to show how lame they are in comparison (weird since there seems to be less of them than neutron stars). Plus some materials gathering from rings. Together these would show what an epic feat Chiggy achieved since he didn't actually use neutron stars or white dwarfs!

See how far towards Colonia you can get in an hour and a half!

I think part of what Corbin wanted to achieve with the flying circus Educating Ed stream was to make a case for better exploration gameplay. I think he partly achieved this, and if you can do a similar thing but instead of mainly talking and showing videos about it you can actually show what's missing then that would make it a great success.

Dognosh for his work for the exploration community and encouraging newcomers - I wouldn't have considered my Cardinal Points run if it wasn't for the encouragement I got from Dognosh..

Haven't seen Cmdr Dognosh around the forums or in game in ages! :(

Nice idea; from the practical point of view, what is it you want Ed to actually be doing on the livestream? Talking to these people and winging up with them is a start but what are you trying to do that for i.e. what is it that you want to communicate? What would you be teaching Ed to do?
Bearing in mind that, after his successful return from Beagle Point, Ed is now a seasoned explorer himself, which aspects of exploration do you think it would be useful for him - and those watching the livestream - to learn? Also, the Educating Ed series is about player groups more than individuals, so which group(s) do you think would best be suited for the task? e.g. SEPP, The Children of Raxxla, CCN, FGE?
.
There are a few explorers I would add to your list but there are so many out there who have contributed it could get to be rather long, so I'll just add three, for their inspiring/entertaining videos:
dr kaii
Turjan Starstone
Titus Balls

Plus one random guy for no reason at all.

You make a good point, in all seriousness.
Many of those listed in the OP and elsewhere in this thread - they're not exactly unfamiliar to explorers. I think a focus on exploration as a community and way of life as a whole would be best.
But (sigh) these things being what they are, Big Names is what's required. So I'll add Qohen Leth to the list, for his huge commitment to the Elite Community, kick-starting expeditions and designing such amazing logos and patches for a wide bunch of people and groups.

Good point, I guess I'd just like to see some recognition and emphasis on the exploration part of the community. Bearing in mind many explorers are introverted loners, maybe Educating Ed wouldn't be the best medium, but would welcome discussion on the subject :)

All recommendations added to list.
Who shall I add regarding the great activities around Colonia and the Neutron superhighway?

Great idea Col Frost!

I am humbled to be on the list.
Here are a couple of other people that have inspired me (and most likely others as well) to go seek adventures out there in the void:

R4nger0: A hilarious CMDR who at the same time Erimus got to Beagle Point and Zulu Romeo reached Sag A*, tried to cross the galaxy in his trusted sidewinder called "Sneaky Pete" (Mind you, this was a daunting task - no jumponium, no engineering and very frequent server disconnects). It is my opinion that this has helped triggered some curiosity and interest in deep space exploration due to these events.

Surly_Badger: Founder of the Fuel-Rats, explorer and deep space miner. This CMDR has inspired and in effect directly or indirectly helped tens of thousands of CMDR's who ran out of fuel.

Most recent event that I must mention:
Chiggy vonRichtofen: Epic rescue of CMDR Macedonica as seen in the latest newsletter and highly acclaimed thread right here in the exploration forum.

Yep, +1 to this. For example, while you included me for the ELW list (thanks!), I'd say that talking about the work with curating that would be quite boring. On the other hand, if the topic were finding Earth-like worlds, that would be much more interesting. Could also pull in other people who worked on related stuff, like exotic systems, the science of the galaxy and so on - Jackie Silver and Matt Graham come to my mind first, and plenty of others could be looked up for the practical stuff on surveying for ELW-s.

Another topic would be exploring the sparse regions of the galaxy. I should like to be at least remembered for blazing a trail to the Outer Arm Vacuus too, but apparently that's still quite unknown. (As Erimus put it at the time: "The route saves travelers trying to reach the fading Outer Arm a 20,000 LY detour through the Formidine Rift, and is thus considered to be one of the most important travel routes so far discovered.") Allitnil and I could talk plenty about this too, and I don't think that Ed has done either of the above two activities much.

Bear in mind that I'm not familiar with the Educating Ed livestreams, as I admit I haven't watched a single one, but if they are really focused on player groups, then none of what I wrote above actually has any groups. I guess you could say that the most active contributors to the ELW list form a very loose group of sorts, but that's all.
Hey, who wants to join the Earth-like Society or the Rare Regions Association?

All very good points. I'd like to join the ELW (Appreciation) Society :)

First, wow. To be listed with such inspiring actors is a massive honour.

Having watched a few of the Educating Ed's (I also took part in the Flying Circus :)), I believe they have been focused around two things: Teaching Ed something new, usually a skill [I guess the clue is in the name right?] and in doing so, teaching us viewers something we may not have known about.

For my part, I can offer very little. There are far better SRV drivers out there [check out the Kick the Alien event] and spending even 10 mins heading in one direction would make for very boring viewing. [I'm also camera shy and in an awkward timezone GMT+10]

So, I was thinking maybe a special newsletter or two might be more appropriate; something that can allow from a paragraph to a page to be completed for each nominee. What you *could* then have is one or two enthusiastic evangelists running Ed through the diverse list.
As alternative to the newsletter, there could be simple thread - this one? Just flesh out a paragraph in the first post for each nominee - it can grow with time :) Or maybe talk nice to Dr Kaii to add a second post to the 'Achievements and History Directory' sticky. The downside of course is if you never some to the subforum, you'll never know.
Fwiw, I really liked the writing style that Cmdr Macedonica used on his Beagle Trans Polar attempt; a sort interview about something that happened long a go in the past. but that just might be me :)

How about featuring the authors of some of the popular tools that explorers use and showing off the use of such tools on a livestream.
For example:
Genar-Hofoen author of Captain's Log
EDDiscovery - Finwen, ian666 and robbyp - apologies for any other contributors I haven't included.

The idea is to inform anyone who has read about the new player journal in the patch notes but doesn't know what it does.
