DK2 owners, I could use your help to choose a GPU

Hello. I have a DK2 and an old AMD 7850. The combo copes reasonably well on VR-low and when not in a station/RES, but I think it's time for a new GPU.

Any recommendations regarding a new GPU by DK2 owners would be great! I'd like to
- run on high/er settings (eg SS>1) so that the poor resolution of the DK2 is somewhat mitigated.
- not break the bank (it's plausible that beyond a certain price benefits will tail off).

(please don't tell me to (a) buy a Rift (b) buy a 1080 TI, can't afford either :) Thanks!

Start with a budget. Look at the GPU hierarchy list and see what hits your budget number. Otherwise:

Titan X Pascal
1080ti (tba)
1080
1070 <----- ABout $400 US
1060
1050

etc. etc.

Then there's AMD cards.....

Thanks, this is what I have been doing. The complication is that I don't have evidence for what happens in the lower tiers, plus AMD cards don't fit in neat boxes in that scale. That's why I'm appealing to people who already have a DK2 (so to compare apples to apples) and a card such as

1060 6Gb
1060 3Gb
RX 470 4Gb
RX 460
...

If you have one of those and a DK2, what's the experience like and what settings can you comfortably run on?

well my GTX 970 DK2 setup is optimised and I have no issues at all. Use the MSI Gaming tool I've linked to in the other thread for a boost to CPU and GFX. I play at 1.5 HMD quality in space and 1.25 in stations with most settings high and some ultra. Loads of guides in the sticky threads to help get the best performance

Just make sure you disable Oculus ASW as not great for DK2, and the latest Nvidia driver is poor, so I rolled back to 375.95 which is probably the best driver I have used.

Hi.
I used a gtx970 with my dk2 very successfully for 18months. I still would be if I hadn't upgraded to cv1 back in June. I didn't really run any other tweaks with it other than changing the hud colours. My cpu is AMD and shown in my sig.
My new cv1 also ran on the 970 but only on low settings so I upgraded to 1080 recently (mobo and intel gen6 cpu upgrade next to complete my build).
For dk2 use - which is 75hz btw, I'd say that if you are on a budget, a 970 (or 980) can be acquired fairly cheaply these days.

As for playing in VR, yes - scales are REALLY that good. Its the closest you'll get to flying the real thing (real size). I've over 1400hrs in VR with ED.

I use a DK2 and I have the 980ti - it's spot on, even on planets. I use Dr. Kaii's EDProfiler too with max settings and 1.5 super sampling.

I run my DK2 on a GTX 970 which are very affordable, especially second hand. I get good performance when running VR - Med graphics setting. Stable 75 frames.
VR-High tends to judder a bit at stations and on planetary landings but fine everywhere else so I set it to this if I am off exploring.

My other hardware for comparison,
Intel i7 v4790
24GB DDR3
SSD

Similar setup here, DK2, i7 3770/16gb/GTX970SC. Runs smooth at medium settings :)

It probably isn't helpful, but I run my DK2 on an I7 4770 with 16Gb ram and an AMD FuryX it runs with no judder on when approaching planets and driving on the surface. I was quite surprised as I haven't used it for a while, due to micro-stuttering. With the latest Oculus and AMD drivers it has been transformed. So much so I just purchased the Rift CV1.

To the point; You could used an AMD R9 290, or if you can stretch a little further the 290X I had the 290 before the FuryX and it worked well. I believe they will be reasonably priced now as a mid range card. You could also look at AMD's latest cards to see if there is one in your price range.

Don't shoot the messenger, but Oculus said long time ago they will drop support for DK2 before end of this year. And after this, I don't think keeping old drivers will be enough to be compatible with new games or new ED builds...

Yeah I know we're living on borrowed time. I backed up all the old software from Oculus Share so I will be able to use it to some extent with old drivers (if NVidia doesn't cause any issues with old Oculus drivers that is)

Of course I would lose support for my favourite VR game so would be forcing my hand to look at a CV1 sooner...
