Elite: Feet should come with perma-death - Discuss

Elite: Feet (as Cmdr Psykokow has dubbed the release of Elite where we finally get to walk around stations and planets) should probably have a new "death" mechanism. Let's face it, if you are trotting around a planet, 10 KLYs from anywhere, and fall into a deep ravine, you're going to be dead. So, what should the re-spawn mechanic be?

A. That's it. You're dead. Your name is written in the stars and you start again from scratch with a new commander.

B. Keep the current mechanic and come up with some implausible explanation for how you are suddenly transported many light years across space in the blink of an eye.

C. A hyperspace transmitter in your ship sends notification of your demise to the pilots federation where your next clone is inflated and your memories uploaded into its brain. This takes a little time, so you are prevented from logging into the game for a period of 24 hours. When you do get back into the game, you find yourself in a freewinder because your insurance payment was used to pay for the inflating of the clone.

D. A choice of A (straight back in the game) or C (take a little time off to spend with the family).

I'm ambivalent. I just wondered what others might think.

I think this is a Troll Post.
Anyone whose IQ Surpasses his Body Temperature by even an Moderate Degree knows that Perma Death and thus the Loss of the Assets would result in the Perma Death of the Game itself because within a few Months nobody would bother Playing anymore due to being annoyed about Starting over.

They keep the escape pod in their clothes along with all the data and materials, and they heal like wolverine because science.

In EVE Online, if you lose your ship it's just lost (anyway you don't lose any skill point anymore).

Anyway yeah, no perma death and no 24h delay (?). It would be just fine to have a clone chamber inside the ship.

Beat me to it! ;)

Yeah that's how it works. You get 3D printed. Hopefully it comes as a module for your ship so you don't have to go far. Might have to carry around a cargo rack full of goo. :p

Once we can land on Earth likes and water worlds, we could harvest the goo :D

Prior to the insurance screen, a message offering condolences for loss since notification has been received of loss of Cmdr X. However, as sole beneficiary to the estate, all assets and insurances pass to you.

The way it'll most likely be explained away though is inheritance. My son Duckfat junior will no doubt be taking over my ships and credit balance within a few minutes of my walking on a planet.

E. Your space suit/body armour* contains a subspace distress signal transmitter. Rescue services arrive while you're unconscious, put you in stasis and take you to the nearest Medical Facility where you're healed. They're VERY fast and efficient, because no-one wants to wait for days before they can play the game again.

* For when we can walk around space stations.

Well, the current mechanic is highly implausible already. I died on the other side of the core and was instantaneously back in the bubble...

When we get feet I think the most plausible mechanic would be c. Although I don't like the wait 24 hours aspect. Players will be angry enough without making them wait to restart.

I also like the idea of c when they finally make black holes deadly. After all, when you're crushed out of existence when you fall past the event horizon, no escape pod is going to save you...so a way around this is just before crossing the EH your ship transmits your most recent memories back to the bubble and inflates your clone quickly.

That'd work for me. I only put in the 24hr thing for those of us who value realism above convenience.

I do wonder what FDev will actually do, though.

Of course, as Duckfat already said; it's magic, so all bets are off. :D

If you value realism above convenience then throw yourself from the bridge.. let's see if you're back in 24h :p

Anyway it's a game and death it's handled with convenience, otherwise people won't play games

Our CMDRs are all in a Sim run by Pranav Natal and Utopixx Entertainment anyway. Hardcore mode will be unlocked as soon as we get out.
