Horizons Mothership destroyed

I've had Horizons for since it came out but for one reason or another I've hardly spent any time on planets. So I thought I'd give it a go and on my second trip out in the Scarab I was cruising around trying to get the hang of the scanner when I message popped up in the information panel saying "Mothership destroyed". And that did seem to be the case - no trace of it. I'm still cruising around in my Scarab!

1. What happened there?
2. Does it happen often?
3. What do I do now?

It's an obscure planet on the edge of the bubble with no settlements. No sign of any other ships or other activity.

If you leave your ship it can get destroyed by NPC's or other Cmdr's.
It does depend on where you are. If it's in the bubble of populated space then the chances of it happening are higher.
If you are thinking of leaving your ship for a length of time whilst you go for a drive in your SRV you should consider dismissing your ship, this will put it safely in orbit. You then recall it when you are ready wherever you are.
You are a bit stuck now as there is no mechanism to either get another ship or for another Cmdr to rescue you.
You can keep going trying to survive in your SRV for the fun of it, or just self destruct your SRV.
.
Having said all that, I left my Cobra III on a moon last night, taking snapshots every 10 minutes. It was about 900LY from the edge of the bubble so I felt safe.
I came back this morning to check only to find my ship was destroyed.

Isn't the current range to be safe from NPC's outside the bubble around 1000ly's? I'm sure in the early days it was only 200ly's. The 200ly range would just about seem sensible but to find NPC pirates etc out at up to 1000ly's from the bubble seems to make no sense, when the bubble itself is only around 400ly's across!

Basically, if you want to explore safely, first make sure you are more than 1000ly's from ANY inhabited system, THEN begin your proper exploring expedition. Should save any 'embarrassment', such as above!

you should get, "Ship under attack" long before destroyed ?????, when its under attack simply dismiss, if you have any shields at all you should be fine
Unless it was another player who was very well equipped, then you stand little chance of getting your ship clear in time...

Any time I leave my ship and go driving in the SRV, I always dismiss my ship. Pirates can and do drop by to scan, and if they see cargo they will attack. Sometimes they attack even with no cargo. Your ship is vulnerable sitting alone.

I find it strange that an NPC can even find you on a planet, but hey, that's the way it goes.
My next test will be to go as cold as possible to see if that helps.
After that my next experiment will be leaving the ship at 1100 LY.

All I saw was "Hull at 10%" and then Boom - gone. I was in Mobius so very unlikely to be another player. I saw no sign of any NPCs in any of the previous 10 or so systems I'd visited in this regions.

Maybe it was hit by a meteorite!

Anyway - you live and learn. I'll dismiss the ship in future.

Bingo!

Usually best to DISMISS the ship while exploring in the SRV. Its easy enough to recall when needed.

I know it's only a game (I think) but it was a bit unnerving the 1st few times when it flew off [woah] but it's always come back so far :D

If you forget to dismiss it and get 2 far away it will also fly off, I thought someone had pinched it when it happened, boy was i cussing.

Maybe along with the pirates and assassins we could have ship thief's, just hire one at your local dodgy station, then again probably not a good idea.

I doubt it will matter, one of those inbuilt npc cheats..

This is a hard lesson I learned way back when, now I always dismiss my ship.

Before you self destruct, log in to ED (pre Horizons) then you will re-spawn in outer space as ED has no planetary landing. If not, you will just need to self destruct.

Good luck CIMV

Ha ha too late! I wish I'd thought of that!

This has just happened to me while mining for Polonium on Beagle Point 7. Yep, 65,000 LY from the Bubble. Currently driving around wondering what I'm going to do. Dismiss your Ship no matter where you are in the Galaxy. The Game Cheats.

Does this actually work?

Ow ow ow!

You are stuck out there unless you either:

a) Self-destruct - for the fast return to the bubble and loss of all data.

b) Raise a ticket with FD support and hope they can and are willing to restore your ship.

Why would they do that? Presumably it's part of the gameplay design that ships on planets are vulnerable - although I would still be interested to know what it was that destroyed my ship.

I believe that they have in one case supplied a replacement ship, due to the destruction being caused by a bug.

If you do not ask, you certainly won't get it checked out!

I choose option a) and respawned in Jaques. Yes I lost a load of Tagged Information but it seemed the right thing to do. If I went crying to FDev, I would lose the feeling of true danger and adventure that exploration gives you. Plus I now have a great back story for my character. :)

That would be the only reason why I would get them to check it out. I was in Open.....it may have been a player.

There is a bug reported with 2.2 where doing this "recover to orbit" with pre-horizons prevents you from using your recovered ship with the SRV. If you later land on a planet, the game will crash with a connection error when you try to board the ship with the SRV, or if you try to transfer cargo from the SRV. When the game is restarted you are on the planet in your SRV but no ship, once again.

The debug logs said at the time of the crash that the "target ship is dead".

A workaround is to sell your living dead zombie ship and buy a new one. The bug is specific to that ship instance.

There is a bug in 2.2 as the same happened to me. I was reset back to before the incremental 10% hull failures occcured after I rasied a ticket
