Engineers Bought a mod, went to 94%, should i buy again now?

I went to Deciat to enhance my FSD. I met with Farseer, gave her... (whatever she wanted, can't remember now) and i got access to enhancements. I paid for the level 1 "Increase FSD range" enhancement, accepted the result and now i'm just sitting there, at 94%, unable to buy the level 2 enhancement even though i have the material needed.

What now? Do i need to buy a different level 1 enhancement just to cover the extra 6%? If so, why is that? I just need an increased FSD range, nothing else.

you can do another L1, and discard it - you will gain rep.

that said, farseer does powerplants - do a L1 roll overcharge, maybe you get one which increases both heat efficiency and power - if not, discard.

Yeah if you want a lvl 2 enhancement you need that extra 6%.

When you get a mod it gives you 34%, so normally 3 mods at a level to advance to the next level.

But you can get % by selling exploration data, or trading, which is how you've probably hit a weird percentage.

I mean lvl 1 mods should be easy enough, they are usually from very common materials, I would just do any lvl 1 mod at all but discard it, you will then have lvl 2 mods available.

If you have no materials but an SRV, just land 10km outside of her base and collect some sulphur, phosphorus or nickel. A single unit of any will to to cover the difference to rank 2.

Thanks to all for your comments. They were helpful.

Another "trick" is to head to one of the nearby systems and BUY a STOCK FSD drive for your ship and get it over to Farseer base either by installing that one on your ship, or storing it and shipping it over there. Having more than one FSD module to work on while upgrading gives you the ability to save a really good roll and swap in another module to continue working towards something even better.

You can apply this technique to any modules on your ship if you have the $$ to buy multiples and ship them to the Engineer you are working with.

This is especially useful if you have more than one ship that uses that module.

I of course recommend using the A rated max class your ship can use for all of this.

Well, indeed as andysonofbob replied: "What??? How can you do this. I've found no way to achieve that. How is it done?

Hey, nice tip. Thanks. Again though... "What???" How can you do this. I've found no way to achieve that. How is it done?

You can now that we have module storage. All Engineer bases have outfitting. Take your ship down there and if you have stored any modules at another system, you can transfer them to your current location at the Engineer base. Once the extra ones arrive, you can start doing your session. After you get a good roll that you consider a top 5 level good and don't want to loose, go back down to Outfitting and STORE your current upgrade and then load in one you have stored there at the Engineer base, and continue rolling with that new module. Now if you find your best roll was back on the one you have now stored, at least you still have it! :D

It works great, and since module storage was added, this is how I do upgrades. I basically leave a stock of extra modules there at the Engineer base if it is something I plan to do more with later. Most Engineers actually sell modules too, but they tend to be low end stuff that most of us wouldn't want to use, so this is where the transferring comes in!

The only downside is that it can get a bit confusing if you have a lot of modules stored there because unless you check the specs of a specific module, they all look the same on the list. It would be nice if we could add some text to modules to give them a unique ID for this kind of situation.

Nice one. Thanks for the detailed explanation.

No problem!

This technique definitely removes some of the "random" luck aspects from the whole process and at least gives you the opportunity to "save" some of your better upgrades while still allowing you continue to roll for a better one using another stock module or a lower quality upgrade you can afford to overwrite.

You can let the engineer perform a mod even on an already modded item, and then just discard the result. It gives you the rank advancement, but keeps your previous upgrade intact.
