A question about engineers

Sorry if this has been asked before, but the search isn't great :/

I've done a couple of missions and and evidently been rewarded with some cargo - let me tell you how surprised I was when I was being interdicted when I thought I was empty :/
Anyhow, it seems these items are used by engineers (can't remember what they were now) so I went over to Farseer and had two dice rolls to add some FSD range. Sweet.

Head back to base to swap into the Sidey thinking it's be nice to up that FSD too. But, can't swap the ship because of the 2 cargo. So, bright idea. I'll sell to the market and then buy them straight back in the Sidey...after I've added a rack. Sold.....and they disappear immediately so can't buy them back.

So do you have to do the missions in the ship you want to have engineered? Or is there some trick I'm not seeing. [and yes yes, I know I'm like 6 months behind - bit disappointed I can't spruce up the SRV!]

wth engineers, you pretty much want to have cargo in all ships you put into a hangar, so you can switch to the ship when you have cargo.

You don't have to do the missions in the ship you want engineered. Instead, you have two more options:
1. Make sure you have enough cargo space on the ship that you want engineered, so you can switch to it with all the cargo needed
2. Fly another ship to the engineer, make the mod, then store the resulting module / weapon at the engineer's base. Fly back to where your target ship is, transfer the item(s) there from storage, and mount them on your target ship.

The second one doesn't work with bulkhead upgrades IIRC, but it should be fine with everything else. Personally, it's why I keep an Asp around: it makes for a great "mod-runner" ship.

for the frameshift drive mod you can simply buy magnetic emitter coil (whatever they are i think i got it right) from Aasgaa system commodity market - a station called Steiner something or other

so no harm done go buy some more :)

Gotcha. So I was being blocked because the sidey had no racks, not because cargo per se.
The 2nd workaround sounds a great way to work around jump limits. I thought about transferring the whole ship to a station in system....didn't realise you could just do modules. Thanks
