Horizons We need to be able to store cargo!

I am in a bit of a dilemma. I am trying to do an engineer update on my FSD jump range. I have all the required bits of cargo but need a chemical processor. Unfortunately it seems these are mostly available as combat spoils but as I have cargo in my hold for the upgrade as soon as I drop into a RES or nav beacon I am set upon by just about everybody (might as well have a target on my back!). I can usually blast one or 2 ships before having to run but don't have time to scoop any goodies dropped. I would like the ability to store my cargo safely at a station or leave it in the hold of one of my stored ships. The daft thing is I have done this upgrade before but in my ignorance overrode it later with a shielded FSD upgrade (what a plum...silly old pensioner I am afraid!).

If I cant find one soon I might have to sell my cargo and get a chemical processor from combat first then...grind...grind...grind again!
I have had help from my two grandchildren in my wing but they seem to be targeted instantly too. perhaps they ought to assist me without winging up maybe?

Cheers, GD

You've been missing a thread on that very topic. It seems likely that you will be able to just buy the stuff when necessary or the commodity requirements will be dropped temporarily until a better "proper" solution is in place. When that will be is up for grabs though.

Even so Grand dad you are correct,
I have lost count of the number of times I have lost ships while gathering that last item like chemical manipulators for a FSD update. Its no fun at all having spent days acquiring items to only become a target, no fun indeed. Not to mention the insurance cost.

Also being able to store these item will allow you to purchase a ship that has reduced cargo space, how many times have I had to sell hard to get collected item so I could buy a smaller ship

Hopefully, ED will implement the storage changes soon, very soon.

Chemical Processors (and Manipulators) are found in Combat Aftermath USS. The number I haven't picked up must number in the thousands by now.

Have not left the dock , no longer playing, due to Fdevs not thinking engineers though, just really dumb, expecting a player who plays few hours a night, and some weekends
been told just throw the stuff out.
Missions Mats takes time to get , and as the Quotes above says , on top of that your a target too, close too many times, so I'm parked, for about 2months now.

Well I am totally fed up now, I finally got some chemical processors so went to see felicity farseer to get my level 3 FSD range increase...guess what she is telling me that I haven't got level 2 yet! I definitely got this before as it took me ages to find some Praseodymium and once I got it I immediately got the level 2 update.
I don't fancy going out in my mining ship again with cargo...I will be a sitting duck! I have raised a ticket for this as I am upset with this engineer malarkey now, it's spoiling an otherwise great game.

Cheers, GD

I just store the ship and temporarily buy a T6 to do that (have done so a few times now). Selling price is same a purchase price, so no Cr lost. You do however need several mils to do so.

Yep, I have got a kitted out mining ship for this, but when I park my python its cargo transfers to the vulnerable mining ship...and I become an instant target!

Pirates will leave you alone until you get something (other than limpets) in your hold, just wait a few minutes after you drop in to wait for them to leave. If there is two it's trickier, I recently had to wait for their combat to end, then the survivor came back and scanned me again - then I waited until after he left my scanner. Unfortunately, if you get kicked a pirate will drop in and scan again, immediately after you drop from supercruise, or if you are logging in at your mining destination, so if that happens you might as well just go sell your haul bfr continuing mining - this is quite a PITA. My Internet connection is lousy.

Yeah if you have cargo you're pretty much screwed unless you can use a ship that can kick pirates' a**. Like I have said before in another thread: BAD planning on FD's part. Recently I've been eyeing the Keelback wondering if it could take on a pirate while outfitted for mining. The main drawback to Keelback mining/defending appears to be weak shield (and of course much less cargo space with a shield than T6).

You can STORE a ship that has cargo onboard? I've honestly never tried doing that since I am always wanting to switch ships and you can't do that until your current ship's cargo hold is empty.

I've been doing combat missions in my Corvette this last weekend and now have a hold FULL of various Engineer Commodities, but the Engineer I would want to visit is some distance from my home system. So naturally I would prefer to do the upgrade session with my Conda which has a 46 Ly jump range as compared to my upgraded Vette's current 23 Ly range. I can't switch ships unless I dump or sell off all the commodities in the Vette's hold, so my only option in this case will be to take the Corvette out to the Engineer base at more than double the number of jumps to get out there!

This kind of thing happens to me all the time! If I don't make a conscious effort to avoid cashing in any of my completed missions until I switch over to one of my high range ships I will be stuck with having one of my lower range ships loaded with the upgrade specific commodities!

Considering we have universal storage for Data and Materials, it just seems like a screw up on FD's part that commodity storage for at least Engineer related commodities has not been added to the game mechanics.

No, I missed that point (duh - to myself), my bad.

Damn! :(

I thought you had maybe found a loophole! ;)

I have had the game glitch on me a few times and allow me to switch ships while I still had Limpets onboard, but that is obviously a bug and it only effects Limpets.

Well... Thanks for the clarification. I really do hope that we see at least an Engineer related commodity storage option in the next major update. It would have a huge positive impact on ED gameplay for thousands of us in the community, and would very likely encourage those on the fence to give the whole Engineer thing a try.

The easy solution here is to just drive around on her planet for a bit, find as much Nickel as you can stomach and do a bunch of grade 1 Shielded FSD upgrades until you unlock the level 3. You can discard/try again and do about 30 in short order.

GG7, if I recall correctly, when you switch ships (storage, buying), any cargo gets transferred to the new ship; if it can't fit, you can't switch. Wouldn't mind having a T6/T7 buried somewhere as my cargo cache.

Actually, you have inspired what sounds like a great idea to me: allow us to store cargo in other ships, and transfer that cargo as needed between ships (at Shipyard ports). It limits our use of storage, and provides (an initial) cost to doing so. Then also give us the option to transfer some or all of our cargo when we switch to a different ship. Sounds good to me.
