An Idea for Educating Ed, need your input

I think that I'd have to agree that an Educating Ed along the original lines might not really work, having been in a few, as disorganise said it's about teaching Ed something new but moreover introducing the community to a part of the game they've not heard of or are unfamiliar with the workings of. If something captures the community's interest and needs to be spread further then an episode can spring up around that, which is how we ended up doing the last Canonn one because of the interest around the Unknown Probes at the time and with Gamescon around the corner, so the rescue is a prime example though I can't think of what you could teach the community (other than the obvious ;)).

As marx said, we could talk for hours about our exploits, especially in the early days being the first to bring back stories of adventures to the Pleiades Cluster in a bog standard Cobra MkIII, or the Crab Nebula, but unfortunately you can't really sell that as 1 - 1 1/2 hours of livestream :D

I quite like the idea of the newsletter, maybe try speaking to Brett about the viability of something along those lines. I know Frontier were looking a while ago at expanding the way they get information across to people.

I'm quite surprised of a couple of omissions from the list, so here's my additions :)

Esvandiary Aside from all his work alongside Jackie on decoding UC surely anyone who's ever travelled near the core owes him a massive debt for his work on route plotting near the core

Zenith/Akira Masakari For the combined efforts on decoding the planetary sounds in the System Map

Yep, +1 to this. For example, while you included me for the ELW list (thanks!), I'd say that talking about the work with curating that would be quite boring. On the other hand, if the topic were finding Earth-like worlds, that would be much more interesting. Could also pull in other people who worked on related stuff, like exotic systems, the science of the galaxy and so on - Jackie Silver and Matt Graham come to my mind first, and plenty of others could be looked up for the practical stuff on surveying for ELW-s.

Another topic would be exploring the sparse regions of the galaxy. I should like to be at least remembered for blazing a trail to the Outer Arm Vacuus too, but apparently that's still quite unknown. (As Erimus put it at the time: "The route saves travelers trying to reach the fading Outer Arm a 20,000 LY detour through the Formidine Rift, and is thus considered to be one of the most important travel routes so far discovered.") Allitnil and I could talk plenty about this too, and I don't think that Ed has done either of the above two activities much.

Bear in mind that I'm not familiar with the Educating Ed livestreams, as I admit I haven't watched a single one, but if they are really focused on player groups, then none of what I wrote above actually has any groups. I guess you could say that the most active contributors to the ELW list form a very loose group of sorts, but that's all.
Hey, who wants to join the Earth-like Society or the Rare Regions Association?

That map of the distribution of ELW's in the galaxy is awesome. I agree that an ELW hunt would be exciting enough. Near the core the frequency of ELW's is around 1 in 40 if you search a D mass star sub sector. Given 4 commanders in a wing searching adjacent sub sectors at the same time, the combined hit rate would be 1 in 5 stars searched for every ELW! Maybe 2 teams of 4 commanders each seeing who could get the most ELW's in a set time? Love the idea of Alltinil and you sharing some knowledge of your findings in deep space and also the idea of the newsletter :)

Just stumbled on this thread! I think that an Educating ED about exploration and the community is quite good, let's advertize our favourite career some!!!!

If many CMDRs are involved, we can produce a very short snippet on the aspects we cared most. This way it shouldn't be boring, and we can present a bazillion different aspects about exploration. Many players wander how we can endure this, so explaining the many activities and researches could be pretty good and not boring to follow.

If it's usefull I can help with the planet Sound research, and also having been the first 65K Club Curator, my old thread is a good collection of all the adventures of the first season pilot that went to Beagle Point.

My 2 cents for other CMDRs are:

Eisen: he put a lot of efforts in the Formidine Rift exploration, is a key figure with the increasing popular Children of Raxxla and coordinator of the expeditions there. Actually he made a great deal (alongside many others like Erimus) in dragging me and I guess others back to the game with this "new" content.

Andrew Gaspurr: one of the curators of Gal Map Thread, he is making a great deal in keeping the project updated and welcoming new POI submitters. Not turning down a new explorer that submits maybe a not so unique POI, is very important to make new players feel they can do something important, and creates passion in the community. Also his personal submissions are quite impressive, I've lost count on how many planetary nebulae he found, and all the very good looking screenshots and presentation he makes. OFC Erimus is the one that started and is yet curing this project, I'm endorsing him 100%, but it seems he doesn't really need my endorsement :)

Keep up the good work and good job!

EDDiscovery - Finwen, ian666 and robbyp - apologies for any other contributors I haven't included.
A little tip you might find useful: in such cases, a nice way of putting it is "the EDDiscovery team". That way, even if you can't name everyone, you still give all of them credit.

And yeah, the format of Educating Ed would probably prove problematic for plenty of the topics mentioned above. However, writing up some articles for a newsletter or something similar sounds like a good idea, and I'd be up for contributing to it.

I think this is a cool idea. An Educating Ed focused on exploration stuff would be more interesting to me than they normally are!

EDIT: Oh woah, I just noticed that MY name is on that list, LOL!!!!!!! I might blush if I actually get talked about! On the other hand though, maybe they could shed some helpful clues my way too….

There is a severe risk of not naming everyone, and where do you draw the line? Some people are great at headlining, others do lots of work with no credit. I am not complaining, I'm just hoping that this roll of honour doesn't upset anyone.

For my tuppence I nominate Wishblend for setting up the Deep Space Comms Array and many other behind the scenes activities.

I totally agree, I wanted to delete this post soon after I'd written it, but I hope this can now just be a list for commanders to get to know a bit about what other explorers have been up to.

Kancro Vantas for his work in building CCN?

Huh? You mean for building SEPP?

Souvarine is the bedrock of CCN and was there from day 1. There's a fantastic team behind it now though, dozens of players and group reps... not just the three or four people like it was in the beginning :)

22. R4nger0: : A hilarious CMDR who at the same time Erimus got to Beagle Point and Zulu Romeo reached Sag A*, tried to cross the galaxy in his trusted sidewinder called "Sneaky Pete" (Mind you, this was a daunting task - no jumponium, no engineering and very frequent server disconnects). I can vividly remember watching the stream of the rendevouz with Erimus on the far side of the galaxy, a truly humbling experience.
I wonder how he managed to store all that Brandy inside that sidewinder though.

Sadly you won't see R4nger0 have anything to do with Frontier these days. I think he quit ED. His 10 month Sidewinder trip across the galaxy and back never got a mention as far as I can remember, and I think his thread got locked too?.... Probably because of his infamous and hilarious redneck rants on livestream. But he was a great character during the early days of exploration in ED, no doubt about that :)

This started out as an idea for Educating Ed, but it quickly became apparent that maybe that wasn't the best vehicle for explorers. Now it's just a list for fellow explorers to get to know a bit about what other commanders have been up to. It's not exhaustive, and there is a risk of leaving important people out, but I for one would love to know more and it's good to give commanders a bit of recognition.

The very early days of exploration community adventures have been chronicled, but sadly they only go up to August 3301, so anything after that has been lost to the mists of time.

Age of Pioneers...

It's okay, I think within this thread there's very little danger of your intentions being misunderstood. If the list goes wild with your name on it though... I'm sure it won't be a problem, don't worry :)

I would most certainly remove Obsidian Ant from the list.

He used to make great videos about ED - the background stories, news, gameplay ideas, etc..

Nowadays I barely finish any of his videos, as if I was reading the Dangerous threads: bugs, heated discussions about features,, beige planets (which theory was debuffed a long time ago) and how to make 100 millions in an hour... trash if I may say...

So on the basis that he's making video's that don't appeal to you anymore he should be removed from the list, even though he has and continues to promote the exploration side of the game?

No, I say he most definetively should stay on the list - I don't agree to every opinion he has - he raises questions and brings information about whole other aspects of the game, but he is mostly aimed towards exploration.

While I'm not familiar with Obsidian Ant's work, having watched none of his videos, a quick look at his playlists shows that he did the last video in his exploration series a year ago? However, if videos on other subjects generate more views, then it shouldn't be surprising if a Youtube video maker would focus on those instead.

I do believe they mentioned his return in a Galnet post not long after he got back...

And yes, he quit ED stating something about FD being too PC (or something a little less family friendly).

A "character" is one way to describe him :)

I watch all of Ant's videos and I find them very well done and informative. Irregardless though there are a lot of players who do not read the forums regularly and OA performs a HUGE service in keeping those people informed about the goings on in the game. Huge.

Oh and the beige planet issue with HMC's and MR's is new since 2.2, and has hardly been "debunked". It's a real issue, and both Michael Brookes and Anthony Ross are currently involved in looking at it.

There was a thread initated by Ziggy, and if I recall it properly, most of the changes stem from the lighting from stars that have been corrected. Also, surface detailing was improved vastly. You may want to look at that thread... I for one enjoy the changes.

As for the rest, I agree that OA has a distinctive style and organized way of presenting stuff -this is why I was watching his videos-, but I can not not put it better --> he is lately mirroring the Dangerous forums that are plagued with toxic discussions. There is a reason why many don't even visit those pages.

That is my issue - lately there is barely any exploration related content. And no news about the unfolding alien mysteries, the COR appeal, or about Colonia. But you learned about toxix stuff such as exploits, how to make a 100 million in an hour.

The changes I noticed and posted were too distinct to be explained by lighting changes.

I also commented in that thread that surface details are greatly improved.

The observations made have not been debunked. I can understand you enjoy the improved textures but the examples given in that thread speak for themselves.
