Oculus quality has dropped since the last major update

After the fairly recent update (that added more station detail etc) there seems to have been drastic changes. Now, on my rift (CV1) when I look at suns, they are encircled by circles of varying shades of grey - almost pixely - it's like I've dropped colour depth from full, to VGA - if you see what I mean. Most things like the cockpit look fine, but anything with dithered edges, like planets, or space "clouds" look aweful. Any idea what's changed ? (my controller settings (xbox controller) have also reset and I can't even find how to drop out of supercruise now)

It took so long to learn all the controller shortcuts I'm so frustrated now I'm hovering over the uninstall option.

Mmm, that's called colors banding and we are several (all?) experimenting this. As your post add your voice and information about this problem I suggest MODs to move your post in the already existing thread about Banding, Warping.

I read somewhere on the forum, that the lastest oculus software is to blame, & a roll back to the previous version helps with this issue.
Hope that helps cmdr

I read that too. I'm not sure it's possible to roll back the Oculus runtime tho' is it?

Don't see how that helps as you have offered no link to how one would accomplish a roll back, only hearsay. As I understand if we can't roll back the runtime anymore,or the firmware, but would gladly welcome information that would allow this, if it would resolve the color issues. Your heart's in the right place though.

rogerd.
I feel your pain. I haven't uninstalled ED (yet) as I am hoping the groundswell of complains regarding color banding and color reduction will eventually get Oculus to find a solution, however, we first need to get them to admit "Houston We Have A Problem". I cannot play Ed in this condition and VR has ruined me for ever playing it in 2d, so for now, I won't play until things improve. I too have motioned that these color banding threads be merged and Sticky'd

Also, the issue is not Ed's fault as it is appearing in some other titles and is being lamented in other forums and by some VR developers so try to be hopefull. All we can do for than is to continue to voice our consternation. I encourage EVERYONE to open a ticket with Oculus and encourage Frontier to apply as much pressure on them as we can to restore this great game to VR "must have" status.

I've contacted Oculus tech support a while back WRT the rollback and was told they absolutely do not support anything but the latest runtime/firmware. So that is not an option and unless you are a VR developer registered with Oculus, I would not recommend it since it can cause other issues not just with ED but with the graphics card drivers in your system, for example.

This is why they immediately remove older versions from their website as soon as the new release is published.

Not sure the rollback would help as I have seen this banding/color problem for quite some time it was never great. If you go back to May you will see all kinds of threads complaining about how this looks after spending 7 bills. Pretty sad state of affairs that they have not dealt with this by now. Get somebody on it and get it solved for cry eye.

Agree - we can't rollback because Oculus controls the installation... if you uninstall, the setup program just goes to Oculus and downloads the (latest) firmware and sdk. They control the versioning.

I suppose its technically possible if you save and copy files etc, but not for 99% of Rift users.

Our worst problem is that Oculus haven't actually acknowledged that the banding/posterisation IS a problem yet.

FD Vanguard said he'd look them up about it, but no legs yet...

I used to have this colour banding issue quite a while back with the DK2, but since the CV1 I have never once seen it. Looking over this forum I seem to be in a bit of a minority which is concerning. A VR colleague/friend of mine had the same issues VRGamerDude, but since a recent Elite update he said it is now fixed. It's a strange one for sure.

Hey Chris
Thanks for weighing in. Love your videos and the other Spies. I have referred your reviews to many here. You are indeed in the minority. In fact, when I asked at one point if there was anyone not having this issue, there wasn't one response to the affirmative. Would you be willing to sell me your equipment? lol
Strange may be an understatement. More like damn annoying as it has ruined the immersion in ED and a couple of other titles. For those of us who have opened tickets with Oculus, the lack of acknowledgement is just as annoying, but we're hoping they are looking into this despite the deafening silence.

Speaking of equipment would you share you specs with us? Hardware, drivers, OS and such. Not sure it will help but, since you may be "patient zero" for an ideal Oculus rig it would be of great interest.

I'm not seeing it (or at least, I'm not noticing it...my eyesight is failing :)). Is this the issue that only affects Nvidia cards and some people have resolved by using a displayport to HDMI adapter or am I confusing it with something else? AMD card here.

Hard to say, as things have gotten worse of late. I was one who noticed an improvement, when I first got a displayport adapter, in the richness of colors although I was not noticing color banding up to that point. Since the return of dull and worse graphics neither the displayport or nor the hdmi show differently. They are both the same -fugly. It does seem to me that it is possible that earlier nVidia drivers were resetting my graphics range to limited from full (they don't now) and that it was this and not the adapter that was what was going on then. The adapter may have only forced the full range. Now however, it may be recent changes by Oculus has created a situation where the Rift isn't displaying full range despite NVidia control panel settings. Only they could speak to that. I believe AMD users are also having the issue. All I know is something got broke recently that was not broken and hope it gets fixed soon.

the "new" extra hard color banding after the last update is due to ASW, so to disable that ( and the new 45 fps thingy ) enable num lock and press ctrl + 1.

press 4 to get it back to auto

Many of us have already tried this without success and yes we have confirmed that ASW is indeed off.

Correction
Turning off ASW does reduce color banding (somewhat)t when the Rift is in full dynamic range , but still ugly when it shows up. When recalibrating my ports (I tried this with both DP and HDMI) I regained FDR. The problem is the Rift drops out to limited range in under a minute. It will occasionally pop back in for a minute then drop out again in short order. So the problem seems to be centered around the Rift being able to maintain FDR and color banding although still visible is being exacerbated by this. We still need oculus to fix both conditions. I am still convinced this is a runtime and or firmware fix.
