Full Version September Release Date?

I quote this page:

http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Elite:_Dangerous_FAQ

Elite: Dangerous is planned to be released for:
Microsoft Windows in 2014
Apple Mac OS X in 2014

Elite: Dangerous will be available on both Windows PC and three months later on Apple Macintosh computers.

So if they will be available in 2014 and the mac version will be released 3 months after the PC version then that means that september (as in 10 weeks away):D:D!!!

That's not an official site.

David Braben has consistently said by the end of calendar year 2014, with the Mac version following some months later.

Expect the full Version mid 2015, not 2014.

Of course the content of the Beta will grow constantly over the year, maybe we hit "Gamma" Status by the end of 2014.

Gamma is after beta and is when the game is essentially 'finished' but with further polishing to do eliminating the few remaining bugs and addings small content like ship equipment, mission types etc...

After that the game goes full release

Nope. Gamma is full release. What gamma is meant for to ensure servers hold and game don't have some long term bugs which couldn't be caught during beta. It is meant to be full blown release otherwise. Gamma will be short in a way it will just check if everything works and then marketing will roll out retail release.

"Gamma" phase isn't a thing, can we stop making it a thing...

Alpha, great. Beta, great.. Gamma just isn't a thing, someone coined the phrase recently and now it's being used all over the place :p

Unless someone mistook GM (gold master) for gamma, perhaps it's forgivable but gamma is most definitely not a software testing phase..

I'm a bit sceptical about a 2014 release date, even though David Braben mentioned it at E3.

Still so much stuff missing. Then again, who knows what's already done and being tested internally. For all we know, everything in the game is already present, but only available to internal testing for now.

What someone else may label things is irrelevant. FD have said there will be a gamma 'thing'. It will follow the beta, and preceed the full retail. All kickstarter backers will have access to the gamma (and those non-kickstarter backers that paid for alpha or beta).

FD have said that they will only do a wipe after the gamma starts if they hit a major problem.

Nevertheless, I would expect some polishing, tuning and optimising and (relatively minor) feature additions during gamma.

It was coined by early early access pioneers (see what I did here :D) like Minecraft as ways to say 'you can play game alright, and pay little less, but we will continue to improve it (ekhem, getting it out of beta)'. David (rather unfortunately) used this term which what he essentially meant was a backer release. That means when beta finishes, next big update enables everyone to play it and practically it comes alive. They probably will use time to finish manuals and tutorials, prepare marketing materials...and then roll out retail release.

So gamma == backer's release.

... we know that to not be the case from the DDF. Unless, that is, FD are playing games by discussing features in the DDF that already are done in internal testing, just to give the pretence that they are yet to do it. Which seems pretty absurd.

I, too, am sceptical of a 2014 release. But David said it, in public, just a few days ago. When FD have made a public statement (such as Beta starting on May 30th) they have tended to hit it, even if they had to redefine what 'it' meant, in order to do so. I strongly suspect that David meant gamma by the end of the year, rather than full retail. But he may have mean full retail (but with bits that we are expecting left out), or they may really be an awful lot further along the road to completion internally than they have let on.

We haven't just dreamt it up on the forums.

DBOBE himself first uttered it to us I believe and it's a planned phase for FD.

It's a soft release of the final version to backers only, "a sort of gamma phase" I think was what was said.

Nope, it doesn't sound absurd at all. Last saying about practically everything comes from FD, and sometimes proposals are so detailed that it would be absurd for them NOT to have at least prototype code to test their assumptions described in DDF proposals (for example, fuel scooping). Sometimes it feels they drop DDF proposal just to verify that they are right (and they usually "read" us rather well). So I would disagree.

What I have seen about DDF - they are mostly constructed to get real feedback from community for development purposes. There *can* be things in some proposals which won't make first release, but I expect implementation of all discussed proposals at certain degree.

If they can hit gamma by the end of the year, it would be plainly stupid not to do the same for retail, especially with all holiday sales. I think during normal beta it will be quite clear for them will they make target or not...so they can start to prepare marketing materials and ads so when gamma hits, period between that and retail version is cut short.

Yes, DBOBE has said that the Gamma will follow the Standard Beta and will probably be the final release. This of course relies on there being no major show-stopping bugs being found in the meantime....
