After over 11 weeks of in game play time. I can say I've never played in solo or private other than to uh.... board flip. I really enjoy playing with friends, and yes I enjoy pvp, haven't been as active in PvP since engineers but still. I'll give you some other stats about me.
Credits Liquid: 1,522,563,288
Assets: 6,022,268,098
Time played: 2,002 hours
Deaths: 219
Insurance costs: 458,990,726
So, if my math is right... assuming each death took around 2 minutes, which is not true many were bounty cleanings, stupid deaths, and lots were after long PvP battles.. I'd say only 70 total were to players, so I'll use that number.
With each death being 2 minutes, I can say I've been in the middle of dying for 140 minutes. Now with my play time, 2002 hours which is 120120 minutes now minus that by 140 minutes equals 119980 minutes.
So what does that tell me? I've been playing exclusively in open since I started the game. I've only lost a tiny fraction of my play time to PvP interaction (0.12%) and a tiny fraction of my assets (7.62%).
While this is just me, unless you're actively seeking it,or are in a very popular system, PvP interactions are few and far between, when they occur if you have a rebuy (WHICH YOU ALWAYS SHOULD) you'll be fine.
My point is this: Playing in open is 100% worth it for me, I get to interact with my friends and other commanders(most of them are nice) and enjoy the thrill of the occasional PvP (more once engineering is done).
(These estimations are just based on my observations, plus I suck at math so if I messed up lemme know.)

Most of you do realize you could fly in Open 99% of the time, and switch to solo when you actually are heading into PvP territory right?
If you like any form of positive social interaction and you want to see more of it in ED, then stop being such babies. The risk/reward is not high enough in ED to warrant flying in Solo ALL the time.
Of course, if you don't like people, then feel free to Solo all you want.

But what exactly do you do in OPEN mode? Same as, say, me in Mobius?
How does the additional risk call to a PvEr to come play in OPEN because it's... what? more risky? can no longer trade in an unshielded cutter?
Open for me is simply more risk for no extra reward, in fact it's a mammoth liability compared to Mobius.

Off-topic exploration into the why behind the opinion - can be construed as badgering or harassment.
First thing that trader should do is having Heatsinks instead of chaff, or better a combination of both.
this will guarantee him invisibility, meaning , no gimbals, no fixed, no turrets , no missiles, no hatch breakers will EVER lock him... also he would be able to hi-wake to safety while invisible.
But instead they run builds that are not good for traders it selfs....
not gonna get into the OP, as its all been said before however this is interesting imo. Are you saying the AI is fixed now so stealth builds work against them? last time i looked stealth was only viable in PvP and not in PvE, therefore if a player is more accustomed to be up against AI, going stealth would be ineffective and chaff would be the only option really.
however if this has changed i may have to give stealth a go.

Understood.
Question: Can a person talking about someone career in-game be considered harassment?
Ex. I think piracy in game is equal to murdering in real life.
In between the lines would he be saying that all person that chose to be a pirate in game are a real life "murderer"?
Thanks for the clarifications,
o7,
Greedy.

There's is NO need to drop shields and go SR.... by spaming Heat sink you become invisible for 10 seconds
and i was not talking about NPCs.... I was talking about PvP really... when going to a CG you're more interested in evading players then NPCs... Plus, have you ever seen an NPc be agile enough to deal enough damage while submitting and boosting?
First if you're a FuelRat I salute you sir and humbly offer my services to help you in any way I can. The FuelRats are one of, if not the most commendable group in Elite. You guys are absolutely selfless and perform and wonderful and needed service for Elite players. I used the Rats once early on when I was clueless and, as much as I hate to admit it, a week ago as I was chatting with a friend while outfitting and as such I forgot to put on a scoop. In both cases the Rats that saved me were absolutely great about it, the first spent time teaching me about fuel and the second laughed with me as I explained I'm an advanced player or just made a stupid mistake.
As for the numbers being irrelevant you are essentially 100% correct. It really is the experience or perception of the experience that counts. My main reason for posting my numbers was to look at the issue from a more factual perspective. Everyone makes their own opinions and perspectives on things, I just wanted to illustrate to those who don't or have never played in open that the financial/time impact to the game isn't that sever.
Again if you'd ever like someone to wing up with you to be an escort I hope you'll hit me up!!

So pointing out that a player is blatantly cheating and calling them out for that is an attack? And the facts of that make an argument invalid? Sorry, I'm not understanding that logic. "Officer, that horrible person over there just (insert crime here)!" - "I'm sorry citizen, as you called him 'horrible' I'm not going to enforce the law, you should be nicer to even those who break the law". I definitely don't understand that. If you want to defend someone who is stating he'd break any rule he doesn't like and cheat when he feels like it that absolutely your right but saying that because someone calls that out it renders their argument invalid, well that I don't understand.
Not that last part. I don't like combat logging as much as the next guy, but there are times where it is a necessary evil, both obsidian ant and vindicator jones have posted videos about it, saying that they understand why it is used in SOME instances. Also, consider a combat log as basically a surrender. You won that fight. The only difference is that there was no explosion on your screen. Big whoop....
The Ad Hominem attacks came when you insulted his intelligence and called him a troll, you spent a lot of characters on those. If you had left those out, your argument would have been valid. You chose to attack him instead of his argument, at least for a little bit.
I will keep your wing up offer in mind. Thank you for that.
fair enough, thanks for the info...
to answer your question, i have been caught out a few times by the ai in open space, however for the most part you have a point.
thanks
I play in all 3 modes, depending on what I'm doing.
However, I have to admit that Open is my least preferred option because some CMDRs just spoil the whole experience. Does not happen that often but here are some examples:
- Too many psycho-killers (PKs) - immersion-breaking for the simulation - how would they ever afford to exist in these sort of numbers?
- Been in PvP situations where I've let the other CMDR go after getting his hull down to 40%, only to be rammed later by the same person out-of-the blue resulting in destruction of both ships, just because they have a "flattened earth policy"
- People playing games such as bouncing shieldless sidewinders off you during docking so that the station destroys you if you're above 100m/s
- People blocking the docking entrance, just to be a pain (seriously FDev, all the stations need upgrading so that they can use lethal force on ships that stay in there too long)
90% of the people I meet in Open are OK - I have no problems with people interdicting me for proper piracy, or being fired on in CZs etc., but the other 10% are just a pain. From a simulation perspective, the NPCs are more believable than they are.
These 10% have also caused FDev to introduce new things that have a negative quality-of-life impact, such as the way that speed limits have been introduced and penalised.
Careful though, it is not really true what he suggested. In a normal PvP situation your heatsink wont help you at all.
Combat log as a task kill event is cheating, login on the menu is not.
Anyway , cheats are not the answer to any case, and just because obsidian and VJ said their opinions this don't mean anything at all they are just another person like me and you.
Its not a surrender, A surrender is a Give up on the chats com and complying to the pirate, if it was a pirate after all...
But in the end, all comes down to the build and the use of it, if yo have a build with 0 defenses then you're mostly like to fail.
I also would like to see a real crime and punishment situation. But most of the ideas from player are to bias to the pve side that are to a point of ridiculous.
keep in mind that if you know what to do most times you'd be able to leave alive an encounter, IF YOU DO THE RIGHT CHOICES.
