Ships Why can't I pick one ship and stick with it? A rant.

Having every single ship in the game, some of them twice, I have often wondered what would happen if we were forced to only fly one ship.

Part of me thinks that would be so cool. Your ship would become your entire life, everything you do will be done in this ship. it would force you to really consider your loadout, and it would become your home.. no ship transfers, no home system, true freedom.. that sounds just so fantastic.

The other part of me is terrified of this idea and wants to drown it in a bucket.. lol

I'd say that a lot of players can't decide what ship they prefer and swap according to role/mission.

If you can afford the T9, then you should be able to buy an A-rated Cobra mk III (~7 mill) and Viper mk III (~2.5 mill) and still have cash left over for other ships when you feel like a change. If you tend to stay in the bubble, you can always have your Cobra and/or Viper transferred to your current location fairly cheaply.

I have a similar problem. I think i've settled on some ships, and then i get an urge to fly something else.

My current mining ship is a Clipper, and yet, i'm sat thinking its not really me. I need something different.... and that's already like my 4th mining ship, after having a Python, a T9, and a Dropship.

Maybe a mining Cobra Mk4 next.

The problem is OP, i don't think there is a solution. The problem isn't the ships. Its us. We are infected with a need to change ships all the time.

When I started I had a "one man, one ship" rule myself and ran into the same problem you describe OP. Through constant buying/selling my stat for money spend on ships went through the roof. I found the game became much more enjoyable once i let go of that. I still don't like having ships scattered across the galaxy however. What worked for me was finding a station to call home, and park my ships there. I'm not overdoing it though. Right now I own a DBX for exploring, an iCourier for mission running and the occasional pewpew and am planning on adding a Type-9 once I return from my current exploration trip.

See something that would make my mind up for me, is if FD release a vibrant pack for the Cobra Mk IV. If I could paint all five Faulcon DeLacy small ships orange, I'd be a very happy pony.

Seeing as the Faulcon DeLacy smalls can do anything as a collective.

Having a fleet of 11 ships sometimes makes it difficult to choose, and I am loathe to sell any more ships (Vulture, Viper MK IV, FDL). I wish to try them all to see if I can settle on one for a while, but I'm sure I'll come back to the hangar and take others out. Variety is the spice of life after all...

Cobra, Mk III or Mk IV, or a Viper? Keelback, or Type-6?

It's going to depend entirely on what you want to do with it, so if that keeps changing then you are stuffed. (The answer will NEVER be Cobra IV though)

That Homer Simpson GIF where he's spinning on the spot describes my predicament fairly well.

Look for one GOOD ship that you enjoy, build it, keep it, fly it and then add and sell and whatever with other ships as the mood takes you.

I have my Python, but last night I bought an Eagle, equipped it and took it out exploring the bubble just as it was what took my fancy. the scanner cost more than nearly all the rest of the ship......

The best bit was, in doing so I also found I have my Pax South paintjob for it, which I had totally forgotten about. It looks cool.

I did about 500ly circular trip around the bubble in it, scanned a lot of systems fully, and have had a bit of a blast.

Earning minimal credits, just enjoying flying the Eagle. Had a couple of scares on fuel, which was entertaining all in itself.

Fun. That is what this game is really about.

I have just logged off back at my home station ready to pick up one of my other ships next time I am on for some more fun.

Doing similar gameplay with an Eagle (after realizing I didn't have on in my fleet!) set off with a mid range build and adding upgrades only when the Eagle had earned the credits, so now 20k actually means something ;) and boy do you have to work at combat with a non engineered ship I've got booted to the rebuy screen a few times but the whole experience is huge fun!

I know that feeling ...

Nice! I'm very jealous of your knack for naming too. Awesome ship names there. If I might ask, what's the distinction in the three groupings there?

I have my current fleets organized by manufacturer, with each fleet sharing a common mission, paintjob (at least they will as soon as FD gets them all out), overall philosophy, and loadout. Each fleet has a patrol ship (multipurose and missions - min 64 tons of cargo), a miner, a carrier, and small-sized fighter (ideally with some overlap). I have a SQL database for all this, but got lazy on updating it, but right now I got:

Core Dynamics - Combat Fleet

Military Sand Paint
Resistance Augmented Biweave Shields
Burst Lasers, Multicannons, and Railguns
Interdictors and Wake Scanners
20+ ly range, but can scoop to full in approx 30 seconds

Vulture - Fighter
Dropship - Miner / Patrol
Gunship - Patrol (or refit to carrier)
Corvette - Carrier / Patrol

Faulcon DeLacy - Exploration Fleet

Squadron Black Paint
Resistance Augmented Shields & Shield Cells (set to regen 50% shield strength)
Pulse Lasers (focused on damage), Fixed Cannons
Cargo Scanners and Field Maintenance Units
Thermal efficiency modded engines and power, can frameshift while scooping
30+ ly range, but about a minute to scoop to full
Secondary focus on combat for "aggressive science"

Viper Mk IV - Fighter
Cobra Mk III - Miner
Python - Patrol
Anaconda - Carrier / Patrol

Lakon - Trade Fleet

Tactical Red Paint (might swap to a vibrant... orange?)
Standard Shields, modded for high-capacity
Pulse Lasers (focused on capacitor efficiency) and Incendiary Multicannons
Cargo capacity, A-grade sensors, and point defense (to protect cargo)
~25ly range

Diamondback Scout - Fighter
Keelback - Carrier (or refit to patrol)
Type 7 - Patrol
Type 9 - Miner / Carrier

I'm considering adding a Scout/Exploration Assault Ship to my Core Dynamics Fleet. It would be the fastest of the bunch and with a lightweight build I can get 30ly from it, but it would mess up the nice symmetry that I have going on. But if I mess up that symmetry I could also add a Sidewinder light fighter to my Faulcon DeLacy fleet... Which opens the door for an Asp Explorer as a Lakon gunship-type, but I am not sure if I want to go that far.

Thanks. :) It's a bit chaotic at the moment (my FDS switched roles ... again), but they are more or less sorted by preference - my favorite ships are at the top, and down below are the runts of the litter and those with nostalgia value only.
