Damn I so wish I had the money to experience this! Not sure if it is even on Xbox yet though? Still, it will be out of my price range.
I can't help but have a giggle to myself.
so I decided, being Sunday, that after a good 3 hits of good strong coffee at the local cefa, I should be buzzed enough to build my new PC.
I have an Asus Maximus Gene VIII, Intel 6600K, Corsair 650M powe rsupply, a Corsair Air 240 case, and spent a bit of time ensuring I was oging to get the best CPU cooler for my build, and ende dup with the Notcua NH-L12. I'm re-using my existing Asus GTX970 Stryx...
So, after slowly assembling everything, applying and cleaning off the thermal paste form my CPU a few times because, well, it just wasn't quite tight... Attaching the cooler, screwing everything into place, screwing in the power supply, hooking up the cables, the time finally came to plu gint he GTX970...
Erm... Yes, with all my measuring and ensuring of clearances, I kinda forgot the video.. It's too tall, and has a bit sticking up right where the corner of the case is, so I can't even plug it in and eave the cover off.
To say I giggled was an understatement, I actually laughed quite maniacally, and my confused father was wondering if I was going mad.
Anyways, nevermind, now to figure out whether to just use the old case, or just put the old PC back together for now and get a new case...
I think I'll put the old PC back together, I no longer feel like installing a Windows on a new PC, then installing ED, then a bunch of other drivers!

I got a 980 for my DK2 a while back. The video card arrived in this humongous package. My initial thought was that is was a terrible waste of packaging for such a small computer component.
It wasn't a waste of packaging.
I took out the giant epoxy slab of soldered components and fans and checked it against the available space in my computer case. It was not going to fit.
No way was I going to go back to the substandard performance of my old card, and so after a lot of hours of gritted determination, and the dogged use of a hacksaw, I finally had my VR-capable computer.
Just spotted this article about new Sharp 1920x2160 2.8" OLEDs for use in next gen VR headsests!

It can be a fine line between a giggle and a scream, not sure which way I'd have gone in that situation! These modern graphics cards are huge aren't they. I recently heard tell of laptop with two 1080's in it and just thought - how? Two 1080's would be bigger than a laptop just by themselves. Hope your day improves.
...and no one wants to buy a hacked up case...

Actually, the only thing stopping me form the hacksaw/dremmel is that the garage I rent is about 10 minutes drive away, and I'm not entirely sure I want to keep the case if I'm going to have height issues, and no one wants to buy a hacked up case... I need to allow for a possible GTX1080Ti... Which, I suspect will be too tall for the case. Shame, it's actually an awesome case otherwise.

I believe you but I'm struggling to see why the 970 won't fit? Is there a heatpipe or something that sticks out from the top of the card that won't let you put the case side back on? I can see the Strix 970 is a thick card, double slots width with a third slot taken up by heatsink. Can see there is a fair bit of discussion about it on the net.
The review on AnandTech for that case shows a resonable 3D card installed - a GTX 1080 will be a tad longer, but not taller.

Further to this I just wanted to report back that today, contrary to rumours that "you can never go back", I went back to playing Elite on the monitor and actually .... I loved it. The graphics are so so beautiful (I actually got to appreciate them all over again) and I felt, almost a sense of relief. I'm far less conflicted playing on the monitor than I am in the Oculus. I also think having head tracking really helps when "going back". There's undeniably a sense of loss because the VR experience IS stunning but I suspect that, until the next gen of VR headsets comes out (with maybe double the resolution) I'm going to be mostly playing Elite on the monitor and will save my Oculus (which I love and have no regrets about buying) for "experiences", blowing the minds of friends and relatives and playing Lucky's Tale.
These are just my opinions of course, others will (and do) disagree.
Kinda jealous.
I was an early adopter and got the initial CV1 Oculus Rift. Even though it was blurry and impossible to read the market lists at stations as you stated I was in awe at being in the cockpit of my own ship, pixels or no pixels this was the future and I was sold.
Unfortunately I can't get the damn thing to work anymore and I believe the CV1 Rift is just not supported at this stage by Oculus or Frontier.
I was warned before I purchased it so I can't complain too much and even though I am happy for you much sadness is had by me every time I remember the now fading memory of only me and my Asp at the solitary center of our Galaxy staring into the vastness of Sagittarius A ... boo, hoo, hoo.
I'm sure you mean the DK1. The CV1 is pretty amazing. I know can't wait to get back into my ships cockpit.
Anyone actually still have a dk2? I saw one second cheap and am contemplating the purchase. Is the dk2 still worth it just for this game?
