Full Version September Release Date?

It'll be ready when it's ready.

Indeed, I thnk DB may end up tattooing that on his forehead the way things are going.

To speculate though I would say:

Winter 2014 (Fall if you are American) - Release 1.0 - Full galaxy, full gameplay mechanics.

Winter 2015 - Summer 2016 - Release 2.0 - Planetary landings, walking around

We will probably see an Alpha of 2.0 by mid 2015 I would have thought.

"Gamma" phase isn't a thing, can we stop making it a thing...

Alpha, great. Beta, great.. Gamma just isn't a thing, someone coined the phrase recently and now it's being used all over the place :p

Gamma is a thing. The thing is DB OBE said something about the thing some months back, so if he treats it as a thing, even loosely, then its a thing in my book.

Okay, so its a thing. Its a thing, right, and you ain't into it so you shouldn't even criticise it because you're not into it to say whether its good or bad at being its thing. Its a thing you ain't into so you can't comment or criticise it. If it does well then good luck to it. If it makes bread so it can retire to a nice big house in the country good luck to it. Wish it all the luck, maybe one day you can meet it and be its friend but you ain't into that thing.

Forget about full relase dates as they will not do it until they are happy to. After 2014 I would guess.

Also for us who are in beta or gamma the most important date is the date they formally say no more data wipes. So you can then start to earn credits that mean something. Will that be before the full release?

some time in the future they will send back the Terminator to March 2014 to deliver the release game.

In a few months you will suddenly remember you have already been playing the full version since March

I'LL BE BACK !

I'm a bit sceptical about a 2014 release date, even though David Braben mentioned it at E3.

Still so much stuff missing. Then again, who knows what's already done and being tested internally. For all we know, everything in the game is already present, but only available to internal testing for now.

There have been variouis quotes from designers and developers that "they havent switched that bit of the code on yet"

so I wouldnt say stuff is missing - just that it is hidden

"A Rose by any other name would still smell as sweet"

Call it Gamma, call it a "Release candidate" either means mostly the same.

Still, to hit a feature complete, yet needing tweaks, build by September would be a ambitious goal. I have no doubts that FD COULD do it, but would rather they not burn themselves out doing it.

Personally i'll be content with the current pace that FD is setting, that along with the pure quality is refreshing after having been exposed to a few Hyped up projects

Yeh - bad wording I guess... But to us it's missing ;o)

In Warhammer Online parts of the game were turned on and off depending on what was needed to test and I don't know if it made a better test enviroment but it did mean the devs could focus the player base on what needed testing.

Considering where we are now and what's still to be added to the game a September release date (even for Gamma) may be a little optimistic.

Here's a thread I created that lists all the stuff that FD have said at some point will be in the game - http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=19639.

Some of it might be cut (which would make me grumpy as I thought this whole no publisher deal meant that it didn't need to be pushed out the door like so many other games do) but if not that's a hell of a lot of stuff that needs implementing and testing.

FD are taking a "Things will take as long as they have to" approach

It is true that it can seem optimistic. Michael said that Frontier is at the research the release of the retail version for 2014. But the anniversary of Elite in September, is in 3 months, and it seems short. However to release the gamma in September, will not prevent from correcting bugs. The gamma could become a super beta

Gamma is supposed to be feature complete isn't it?
Plans can and do change but I've not heard anything to indicate it has.

Release in 2014 could still happen, 31st December 2014 is still 2014.
Gamma release in December, retail two weeks later, Gamma length was never determined.

The release of the commercial version for the last days of December would be a non sense commercial. The release, should be several days before Christmas. To make of significant sales. It is true that the length of the gamma was never determined. But the gamma was not planned in the kickstarter if you remember ? The schedule is really tight now, I find.

Some things take into account for release:

  • I really doubt we will ever see all content till gamma. Not everything needs staunch testing. Not every feature needs to be spoiled. FD has internal QA team, capable to do more directed testing regarding features. FD look at us for feedback how features feel or how they work - and of course network, which they simply can't test internally good enough;
  • This is still phase between beta and alpha. I expect huge drop of features in normal beta. At this point, they simply try to nail still hanging network issues, graphical issues, etc. - things which should be fixed before normal beta starts;
  • September is good goal, but I also think we will finish in October or November. It's not a bad deal though - anniversary is close enough to hype people about retail release;

Like many, I don't think we're going to see a September release this year, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The publicity will be great though:
"30th anniversary of epic game, oh look, it's modern descendant is about to be released, you can buy in now before then if you want, it's nearly Christmas", etc.

Much rather they get it right rather than just trying to hit a date.

Advertising on the anniversary of Elite will not interest anyone. Except the ancients who have experienced Elite, FE2 and FFE
