Is this a rip off? Or is this Frontier first encounters all over again?

Is this a rip off? Or is this Frontier first encounters all over again?

Ok its a Rip Off ... David and his team have all gone abroad and are spending all the money on Ice creams and booze

Im guessing that what you really want to hear...

HAPPY NOW !! :D

The official word is that "Beta will happen when alpha is done", so to follow that logic to it's natural conclusion... ;)

However, Elite celebrates its 30 year anniversary in September of this year, as David Braben is well aware of, so make of that what you will.
I would like to think that even that prestigious date would not interfere with the natural running of the release schedule.

I would like to think that even that prestigious date would not interfere with the natural running of the release schedule.

I only mention it because of his interview with Scott Manley he was asked the question directly, and he grinned, held his hands up and said something along the lines of "I couldn't possibly comment!!"

My guess is September is what they're aiming towards. But it's only a hunch.

This isn't Duke Nuke Forever or Daikatana... We'll get it as soon as David feels it is ready and not before...

Oddly, I was at the Daikatana party at E3 (when they announced it I think). It was all champagne, cigars and swimsuit models. I have a photo of John Romero somewhere!

Where are them jumpers? Want more dev diaries, and David hosting them with the jumper on! :D

By the way, take note. You are having a discussion now about what clothing braben wears when he makes his videos. Really? Is what he wears during comms videos really got anything to do with the forum topic (Elite Dangerous General)?

them jumpers are the bomb! need to see more of those xmas coming soon so id expect some pretty crazy stuff being worn round then.

Dear Frontier,

I'd like to have a better understanding of when this game will be released. I pledged £35 for the game on kickstarter all that time ago and it was said back then that elite dangerous would be released in March 2014.

You are now asking for £75 to play the Alpha / Beta version and on your forum you state:

"As you know the Alpha has several stages to get through and the Beta stages cannot commence until the Alpha is completed. Because of this it is not possible to give you an timeframe. The best thing to do is to keep your eyes here as all the latest information will go right to this place. "

It seems to me like the longer you keep on charging people £75 to play ( people that already pledged £35) then the more money you are making and the more money we are spending. Is this fair, given that you haven't yet indicted when the final version will be available? Is this whole thing a rip off? Will the game ever materialize?

Three words then spring to mind. Frontier First Encounters (oh yes that old chestnut). Many people who backed this may not remember what happened there, but that game never got released on the Amiga, even after it was marketed as being available frontier started taking orders on it, selling it then..... nothing. Many disappointed and messed about customers. Including me.

As an initial backer, that makes me and the rest of the backers key project stakeholders. I understand that project milestone dates slip and I also understand that the game needs to fully tested. I don't find it acceptable that your communication of project progress and future project milestones has been so poor.

At the very least, your project manager should issue Bi-Weekly project updates to all stakeholders. Most importantly, to your paying customers. Even if dates slip which of course they will, that's fine, theres probably a good reason for that. We deserve to know. Even if you don't want to commit to dates, at the very least let us know how many more stages it has to go through (and how many more costs for us there will be along the way).

I appreciate your consideration of my frustration here.

Thank you.

Personally, I can understand the frustration at the communication - developers ( and I am one of that breed ) do not tend to communicate with end-users terribly well. Thats what PR and in a way, marketing people are for, but that is the general impression I get from released statements - its what I would expect if I were in their position for what I would say.
I dont however share your concern that we are being taken 'for a ride' as it were.
I missed the first-encounters stage it would seem, having only a BBC micro model B, a zx-81 and an a500 as my early computers up until the p2-450 era, so my experience is limited to the first two elites, but considering that this is the game they have been waiting to do *properly* for all this time, when technologically they could have made a facsimile from '98 onwards...

From early alpha and the videos posted by those backers at the time I've seen steady progress towards a final product - so I'm not as concerned as I might have been if all I had seen were pre-rendered videos or screenshots.

Hopefully they will learn and adapt in such a way that we can be kept informed in a better way as to alleviate your concerns :)

As far as I see it, no one forced anyone to buy into the game. With any kind of business transaction there is a element of faith and trust.

It's currently expensive to keep numbers down and have mostly serious and dedicated players testing the game.

I'd have loved to have gotten on the game earlier but here in the USA $300 seems like a lot more than 150 pounds. But I did talk the wife around to suggesting I get the $150 beta.

I had been following the game for months and hoped the controls were good. But I could see that the game was progressing well and I believe it will finish. So I decided to take a educated risk and but into the premium beta.

It's both more and less than what I had hoped for. But I am satisfied with what I have to play with and look forward to the next update. They focused on the core controls and built up from there. They aren't throwing everything at the fan to see what sticks and I believe it will be an exceptional game when done :)

I just hope I don't burn myself out overplaying the beta before all the cool stuff is released that offer a broader experience with multiple craft stashed away to choose from and more places to visit.

Looking forward to it.
