What is Space Madness and how can you survive it?

Hello CMDR's,

I have a question.

What are the symptoms of Space Madness?

It's a real thing, ask any explorer and they will tell you it gets weird out there. But how weird can it be? Well with so many CMDR's now heading off to Colonia and for many it may their first time exposed to the depths of space for such a long time I figured it may be a good idea if we shared our experiences of 'strange' things happening in space.

Personally I've had mountain's move from one place to another, strange noises while on planets and in space plus very strange lights that I see while jumping from one star to another. Then of course comes the madness of solitude for which many of us take to talking to the ships computer about and some of us even get some good advice from her too!

This is why I ask you to please post your most mysterious encounters so that others may know if they have remained sane or become as loopy as a box of Ziggie's Space Monkey's!

As for how can you survive it? Not sure to be honest, I've found it best to just go with it and see where it all ends... :D

1st sign of madness: Talking to the ships computer
2nd sign of madness: Thargoids in the palm of your hand (What dya mean, you can't see them...)
3rd sign of madness:
Looking for them...

to prevent to get it, get more distracted while traveling. watch some series and movies.

wont be long before i head out into the black, im trying to stretch the last 5% towards Elite in trading.. after that im gone for a while :p

A good suggestion that I already do, last night I was watching 'The Cosmos' with Carl Sagan, he was sat next to me as we watch the stars hurtle past outside and he was saying such scientific things as 'That's a nice bright one!', he knows his stuff, can't wait till we get to Thor's Eye tonight, just hope it's not watching us!

after yesterday im just done with Westworld, highly recommend it. (the serie, not the movie from the 60s)

Never lose an argument with yourself.

When you argue with yourself, which you will absolutely do during a flight out to visit kooky old uncle fester jaques, there will be this one moment when you're about to lose an argument. Don't do it. Because that's also exactly when you start hearing your ship make a new noise.

Me: Wait. Is that a new noise?
Me2: No. Kofeyh, it's fine it's always been like that.
Me:Look brosif, listen.
Me2: I got you fam <listens>
Me: Hear that?
Me2: hear what?
Me: that?
Me2: what?
Me: that!
Me2: <listens> m8 are you 'avin a laugh?
Me: shhhhh! There it is again.
Me2: kofeyh I think it's time we had coffee
Me: it's a new noise I swear
Me2: look the cutter had always had that sound
Me: u wot?
Me2: it's always made that sound
Me: no, u reckon?
Me2: yeah M8 it's fine bro I am parched
Me: right yes coffee good plan <listens>
Me2: ..
Me: I swear it's a new noise
Me2: nah m8. Seriously? Parched.
ship: <makes all the usual noises>
Me2: parched!
Me: oh right fine yes coffee okay let's go

both kofeyh's head to the kitchen.

..
ship: <makes a new noise>

The cause of space madness for me is mind numbing time sinks that have often lead me to fly into that beautiful oasis....the sun.

What are the symptoms of Space Madness?

The worst symptom are the voices in your head whispering of suicide to get back to the bubble. No more jumps, just that option in the right sidebar. Easy, painless.
It starts harmless, just with thoughts about what to do after reaching the bubble again. Maybe an idea how to mod the ship. After a while the idea starts to grow. The urge becomes harder to resist…

Space is filled with the wrecks of poor souls who couldn't resist.

Talking to yourself, the ship and stars is quite common.
Beware of white dwarfs, the are nasty and try to lure you into their body exclusion zone. If you are not careful they will come closer while you don't look at them. Black Holes are friendly, they whisper of infinity and things humans won't understand.

You can't really get space madness on the way to Colonia because there are outposts along the way. Space madness is a bit like vertigo, and is caused by being adrift without any reference points. That's probably why people like Erimus love making their maps and adding names and bookmarks. It creates an anchor, and sense of place.

And then. You get to jaques. Hurrah! You sure showed them. Hah! No flying into the star, that's for sissies.

And then you discover the ship dealer has a discount sale on sidewinders that absolutlely definitely do not have fundimental problems with maintaining structural integrity... I mean it wouldn't hurt to take one for a quick spin in the station whilst your ride is being overhauled? Right?
