Wilderness of Tigers - Lakon Keelback XE

After my alt-account’s adventures on Mount Nervi and SRVing into high orbit, I wanted to develop a different style of exploring - one which focused on short to medium range exploration but which had the ability to fully enjoy the potential of any one system that I jumped into. By enjoy, I mean explore and test the natural wonders held within the planets, moons, and ring systems after the manner in which we attempted to summit Mount Nervi.

So the emphasis here is not so much on exploring space on the galactic scale but more on drilling deep, as it were, in any one particular system: to drive or fly the deep ravines; summit the impossible mountains and massifs; surf the ring systems about Earth-like worlds or Ammonia planets. I needed an exploration vessel equipped for all those possibilities - to push deep into everything a system could offer up. This would be exploration for the extreme adventurer.

And so was born the ‘Wilderness of Tigers’, a Lakon Keelback, with 2 SRVs and an Aegis fighter. Yes, it only has a jump range of 21/22 light years before any Engineer modifications - but it has all the usual exploration tech in terms of scanners. She flies with a medium fuel tank but with a first class fuel scoop (relatively speaking). She also carries mining lasers (coughs into palm of hand . . .).

And I think this is going to work - yes, I won’t travel great distances but that is not my goal here. This is a ship designed for thrill-seeking in the manner of the adventure we had on Mount Nervi and which will allow me to enjoy any wonder I come across - be it on the planet’s surface or in a maze-like ring system. The ‘Wilderness of Tigers’ allows me to switch between 3 different cockpit views and modes of travel - from the rugged yaw of the Lakon to the bounce of the SRV and finally to the zip and swish of the Aegis fighter. I can roam, drive, climb, fly and explore practically every terrain and opportunity any system can hold.

This will extreme exploring and I see this old retro-fitted Keelback as a ragtag adventuring vessel - sort of like a battered Land Rover with a paraglider and two mountain bikes strapped to it as I drive deep into the wilderness! I will jump into the little systems off the beaten routes and slowly unpick their charms and secrets simply for the pleasure of the race and the climb and the flight.

This is the Lakon Keelback XE, piloted by Commander Hated Nightfall, co-piloted by a naive cadet called Persephone Torres, a waif from an orbital whose clipped professional tone always fails to hide her lack of experience.

Welcome to the ‘Wilderness of Tigers’ . . .

A short-haul shakedown flight out to Maia has allowed me to test and develop the Keelback XE in a variety of stellar environments. I have to say that after the SFL upgrade, this may well be my favourite ingame ship now. Yes, it it bulky and lacks the heat resilience of the AspX but now with a black paintjob, this ship is opening up a new style of exploration for me.

In fact, as a result of the shakedown flight, I have decided to visit Felicity Farseer and indulge in FSD modifications - something I have not had the chance to get around to yet ingame. It will be exciting to see what FSD increase I can get in time. Overall, however, I am looking forward to the day I can take the 'Wilderness of Tigers' out deep into the black for her first extended run. Two interdictions have also meant I have now hired a second pilot - a veteran one - as the last encounter was a close-run thing indeed.

I love this idea!
Fly safe and keep sharing your thoughts about this!

Thanks, CMDR Link971 - will do! Although, this expedition is more about testing the limits than flying safe, to be honest (see below) . . .

Well, after dabbling with the Felicity Farseer and modifying the FSD engine up to grade 4, I managed to increase the jump range from a paltry 19/20 up to a respectable 28/30. The 'Wilderness of Tigers' is now a fully-fitted XE class Keelback ready for extreme adventure out in the black. Last night, saw the final pre-flight checks: I redid the black paint job on the ship; let go the hardened pilot I had taken on board and re-activated Persephone Torres as the pilot; repainted the 2 SRVs into a sleek purple design to contrast with the black of the Lakon hull. A final route decision was made and then I powered up the main thrusters and left the Bubble.

The intention is to head clockwise out to the Cave Nebula and then onwards to explore the cluster of nebulae beyond before arcing about corewards and then work my way into the Colonia region for the first time.

vG1kcdE.jpg

Already after less than an hour's flight-time, the adventure has begun. After refuelling, I dropped out of supercruise to investigate a small moon orbiting perilously close to the main gas giant's rings. Putting Persephone in control, I took the Aegis F out to experience the stunning views. This boded well for the extended trip to Colonia.

However, less than 30 minutes later, the 'Wilderness of Tigers' dropped out of FSD into an interleaved binary star and the temptation to push the Keelback XE to its limits proved too hard to resist. What better way to christen an extreme exploration adventure than to execute an FSD jump from between the two stars:

The adventure begins!

Well that was embarrassing.

After relocating to the next high mass planet in the system, I dropped down into low orbit and proceeded to eyeball any interesting geological anomalies for possible geyser activity. It didn't take long for me to locate a series of dry gulches and low valleys so I edged in and then deployed the Aegis F to initiate a low-level pass with Persephone ordered to bring the Keelback XE on station behind me as a support vessel. The intention was to use the speed and agility of the Aegis F to move in fast and spot any interesting surface anomalies and then relocate to the 'Wilderness of Tigers' to land and then disembark in one of the 2 SRVs to recon further.

gQ7iPeC.jpg

All went swimmingly, as they say. Did I mention this was a 3g planet? I didn't?

Or that Persephone Torres has little skill as a pilot?

You can see where this is going, right?

Five minutes into the exercise, just as I am banking the Aegis F for its first steep descent to the surface of this amazing world, this pops up on my display:

cq5sNij.jpg

In a panic, I immediately transferred control over and find to my horror the Lakon Keelback XE is down to 2% hull integrity. Persephone Torres had banked the ship and her thrusters had promptly pancaked her into the surface. Without thinking through my actions, I disabled FA (for some reason I can't understand now) - and that was that. Shake-down cruise over.

kbzV0IZ.jpg

So now I am back at the starport and ready to disembark again - as for Persephone, I can't fire her. We're all allowed one mistake, right?

CMDR Hated Nightfall out . . .

Given the 'unfortunate' events of the first formal extreme expedition, I reconsidered my position regarding Persephone Torres and decided to terminate her contract. As a result, a new pilot, Cailey Navarro, has been hired. After final registration and itinerary details, the 'Wilderness of Tigers' Keelback XE set off again spin-ward towards the Cave Nebula and its surrounding regions.

This would be a medium-range exploration journey using the combined SRV and SLF vehicles to deepen and enrich the exploration adventure. Its primary aim is not to so much tag undiscovered systems (although that is a nice bonus) but to fully explore and experience the riches these remote systems would yield up. Volcanic activity, ring features, unusual mountains or canyons - these would all be explored as much as possible using the Keelback XE as a support vessel to the SRVs and the SLF.

The first 1000 lys out of the Bubble towards the Cave Nebula has been exciting and slowly but surely the glitter of the Cave Nebula is filling the cockpit view of the Lakon:

I bought my first Keelback right when 2.2 launched and this ship has quickly become one of my favorite ships in the game. I’ve been flying it around the bubble as many times as I can lately. It may just be me but I think the KB runs cooler than the AspX, this little ship is really hard to overheat. In unarmed explorer trim with the FSD modded mine will jump 36.6lys with the SLF, when I change out the SLF for a 5A AFMU she can make 40lys per jump. With some more careful modding I could probably eek out a bit more range, but it’s probably not worth the effort it would take.

It also doesn’t do too bad in combat either. With some strong shields and A-rated gear plus pulse turrets all around, the ship combined with the fighter can take out some surprisingly big opponents.

Yeah, the Keelback is pretty sweet, and I prefer it over the T6 now, heck just for that boost horn alone!!!

I've never owned an Asp, but the Keelback runs indeed very cool.
As comparison, I left the FDL scooping next to a larger star -which was never an issue in the KB- and arrived back at my seat realizing that heat is at 140%.
It was a fine exploration ship even before 2.2 :)

I really like your idea, it looks so great
Nice tests too, thx for sharing cmdr keep going!

Thanks, Link971 - wil do. Heading for the Cave Nebula so I can really test this XE out.

I have to agree with you - in fact, I saw a you-tube from someone who asked if the Millennium Falcon could be created in ED, what would be the best candidate and he used the Keelback as the nearest equivalent. You are right about the heat aspects, too. After spending more time with my Keelback, I have become more impressed with its heat management. I only modded up to grade 4 on the FSD engines but am more than happy with the 29/30 ly range, to be honest/

Now with the addition of the SLF (traded the AFMU for it), the Keelback is hard to beat if you want something different from the Asp and are on a budget. Plus it looks rugged and has the side engine modules which rotate!

Awesome reading! :D
Thank you so much for putting it down and for the nice way you did it!

My hat's off to you.

Thanks, Komemiute - appreciate your feedback!

The 'Wilderness of Tigers' Keelback XE has now arrived in what will be an extraordinary nebula to begin full extreme exploration tours of the local systems. As a taster of the beauty and vistas to come, please enjoy the following cam stills taken from close proximity of the SLF Aegis F:

Thanks, SpaceMonkeyz - it's always good to hear from a fellow explorer!

Enroute to the Cave Nebula, I diverted course into the stunning NGC 7822 nebula, drawn by its astonishing array of glittering stars and planets. What followed was a more than a diversion; it was a sublime journey into the best the galaxy can offer up to a poor Lakon pilot. Already, poor Cailey Navarro has been over-worked either piloting the Keelback XE in my wake as I dip and dive among the glory out here or instead flying wing to the 'Wilderness of Tigers' as it bathes in the light of a dozen giant stars, all caught up in a massive nebula projecta full of mauves and purples and crimsons. If ever the galaxy came close to a painting, this is it, and I am drifting deep into the brushstrokes of genius itself . . .

Now I have purple rings in my head!

NGC7822 is certainly holding it reputation as an extreme explorer's delight. The glow from the nebula mingled in with the profusion of 'O' and 'F' stars (often in the same system) is giving everything here a luminous quality I have rarely seen in the galaxy. It is a joy to pilot the Aegis F away from the Keelback XE and really get out among all this wonderous delight.

But the real joy was discovering a binary blackhole:

The goal next is to locate a perfectly placed landable planet to set up base camp for some SRV exploration.

It seems I'm rather late to this thread - not sure how I missed it, and my loss for doing so.

I'll be honest, it's good to see someone else with ideas like this for making the most out of what Exploration has to offer...and actually doing it.

To each their own, and no disrespect meant, but I just don't understand the draw of, what is essentially, Drive-by Cartography. I get the financial logistics coupled with the lack of stuff out there to actually discover (or so it seems), but that playstyle just isn't for me.

I am planning my own mission of a similar stripe - exploration with a purpose, in a ship that is built to fulfill that purpose, rather than just being a flying gas can. Some people are ok with a shuttlecraft...but I'll take the Enterprise any day. :)

Again, no disrespect to anyone who enjoys that playstyle - one of the best things about this game is that you can make it your own experience. Set your goals, equip the ship, and...go.

Be safe out there - the pics are great, and I hope to see more of them.
