Newcomer / Intro How much would it cost to build a Coriolis Station in reality?

Hi Folks!

HOW MUCH WOULD IT COST TO BUILD CORIOLIS, Ocellus or ORBIS STATIONS IN REALITY?

Cheers!!

2km hexagonal station.

Probably a few billion (say 20) £ for the raw materials. A few more for manufacturing it into the right shape. And that's just the framework. 10-20bil for all the interiors and technology that needs to go into a space city with landing pads and all that jazz.

Finally add a few trillion to get it into space in orbit, assembled and then with enough fuel to spin simulating gravity.

Est cost. £4 trillion +/- 2tril.

As a comparison the ISS cost 150bil start to finish and is only 70x100x20m. Not the 2000x2000x2000 odd that the Coriolis is :)

Well its been said that the Death Star would cost around $852,000,000,000,000,000 to build.

Mind you it would also take 833,000 years to build due to materials and needs for said materials.

That being said the Death Star is a hell of a lot larger than the stations in Elite: Dangerous. So if the DS is 140 km in diameter lets just say the stations of ED are 75-80x smaller (sphere vs cube). So, roughly 85-95 TRILLION US dollars based on today's dollar.

Wow!

According to uncle google:
If you just want to count actual notes and coins, there are about U.S. $1.2 trillion floating around the globe.

Looks like we are not capable of building anything at such big scale... unless we go and get started exploring the universe extracting resources and hunting for new races, and ask them to build new coriolis stations for free...

The T-hitch would be the cost of the technology to enable the build. We simply don't have launchers big enough to put up the materials at the moment. This is one of the reasons the ISS is in such a low orbit, radiation being the next big one (if you are low enough the magnetosphere protects you). Unfortunately suns do tend to give off quite a lot of harmful particles that are seriously hard to shield against so the reality of such a space station is probably further away than you think...

I can build you one for around $10...

Doubtful. You'll need at least 5 pizza boxes. :D

I can build you one for around $10 it will be very small and i cant help you with getting it into space

You could get one high enough up to count as space using a helium balloon :) Not sure I could sneak one onto a launch though :( Space (and weight) is kinda expensive...
