ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Horizons for PS4

Frontier, welcome to Playstation! Many congratulations on the new platform expansion and I wish you all the best of luck over there. I really hope my PS4 buddies pick this game up, especially since I've been ramming this game down their throats for the past year, their only excuse for not getting it was that it wasn't on the PS4. Well, no excuses now!

Can Xbox have cross platform with PS4...pretty please...
Sadly, this is VERY unlikely I think.

One issue with PC/XBOX cross play is the slow update time for XBOX, updates have to go through the M$ procedures before they roll out. So, PC and XBOX game versions are frequently out of sync, and often for quite a while. This would make stable cross-play very difficult to achieve.

I wonder what the update roll out procedure is for PS4, if there are fewer/no delays then it might be possible to get PC and PS4 cross-play.

Of course, the other issue with cross-play is that development for each platform may not always be in sync, some issues might arise on one platform and not another and so to achieve cross-play you end up having to delay updates on one platform due to issues on another. That said, we have PC and MAC cross play and we have definitely had issues arise on MAC that did not arise on PC, so perhaps this is less of an issue.

The final issue I can think of, off the top of my head, is the disparity in controller hardware (I know the PS4 has at least 1 HOTAS). Gamepad style controllers are no match for Joystick or mouse, so commanders on console platforms would be at a distinct disadvantage to those on PC, in many cases.

I would LOVE to hear from the devs on this point.

If the ps4 could manage PSVR in ED I would be beyond impressed.
Awesome news and the trailer is amazing!

Since the Horizons update, the games are actually in sync. All minor patches are in beta first, before they release globally.

Well considering what both sony and microsoft have said on that, it isn't as unlikely as it did before, and remember cross play is something that is really a simple switch that can be built in, that way if versions mismatch they don't try, if they match, they try, so it isn't really a big problem, the main issue is if or if not microsoft/sony wants to allow it. And they both have claimed they are 'open' for it, rocket league has it last I checked.

That good news! But i'm scared that, we will wait longer for upcoming patch and updates and hoping they will merge the universes.

I hope FD can put some thought into Remote Play controls for Elite so that all three of us with PS Vitas can enjoy some portable Elite :D

Elite Dangerous has been a wonderful project to be involved with, made by a great team here at Frontier. Its roots go all the way back to my first commercial game, Elite, first released in 1984 with Ian Bell, while we were both at university. Two sequels followed. Over thirty years later, Elite Dangerous is a huge step forwards from those games, but the principles are the same – do what you like and live life in an immense galaxy – and today you can play with (or against!) friends and our amazing community as you travel the galaxy alone, together in a ‘wing’ or even fly aboard the same ship.

we’re bringing the full game with everything in our ‘Horizons’ season of expansions included, so not only can you fly your ship, but you can carry an ‘SRV’ – Surface Recon Vehicle – in your hold, and charge around the surfaces of planets and moons at up to 100mph, finding materials, attacking bases, or seeking out hidden secret things with your friends.

This confirms that the PS4 version will launch with update 2.3 and 2.4.
